Monster Hunter Wilds Guide#
Monster Hunter Wilds is Capcom’s hunting action RPG, released simultaneously worldwide on February 28, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam) — the series’ first fully synchronized multi-platform launch. Built on the RE Engine and supporting up to four-player cross-platform multiplayer, it is also the first mainline entry to make an “ever-changing wilderness” its core promise: ecology is no longer set dressing, it is the game itself.
The game is set in the Forbidden Lands, an untouched region that cycles endlessly between three states — Plenty, Fallow, and Inclemency — so the same map can look and play completely differently from one hunt to the next. As a member of the expedition, you follow the trail of a mysterious boy named Nata deep into the unknown, piecing together the truth behind the Arkveld and the Dragon’s Tower ruins.
Release and Sales#
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Release date | February 28, 2025, simultaneous worldwide launch |
| First three days | 8 million copies — the fastest-selling title in Capcom history (Monster Hunter: World sold 5 million in the same window) |
| First month | 10 million copies (by the end of March 2025) |
| Steam concurrent peak | 1.38 million players on day two — Capcom’s all-time high and the fifth-highest in Steam history at the time |
| Metacritic score | PS5 90 / Xbox Series X|S 90 / PC 88 |
| Series total sales | Over 127 million copies (as of March 31, 2026); Monster Hunter: World alone has passed 30 million, making it Capcom’s best-selling individual title |
The game is produced by Ryozo Tsujimoto with a development team of 2,650 people. Two open betas ran before launch: the first, on October 26, 2024, peaked at over 460,000 concurrent players on Steam, and the second followed on February 7, 2025. The Steam version launched to “Mostly Negative” reviews due to performance issues, though its rating recovered as optimizations shipped.
What’s New Compared to Previous Entries#
| Change | Detail |
|---|---|
| Ever-changing wilderness | Fallow, Plenty, and Inclemency phases rotate in real time, driving monster migrations, weather, and local ecosystems |
| Focus Mode and wounds | Aim at a monster’s body to open wounds; concentrated attacks on weak points deal heavy damage and enable targeted breaks |
| Seikret mounts | Sharpen, eat, and gather from the saddle; the weapon sling carries a second weapon you can swap to at any time |
| Focused, continuous story | A chapter-based campaign with seamless transitions between base and field, and party members can join mid-quest |
| Cross-platform multiplayer | PS5, Xbox, and PC hunters team up in the same SOS flare, with Support Hunters filling open slots |
| Guardians and Construct species | The campaign introduces artificial “Guardian” monsters, and story takes a noticeably larger share of the experience than in past games |
The Five Regions of the Forbidden Lands#
| Region | Apex Monster | Inclemency |
|---|---|---|
| Windward Plains | Rey Dau | Thunderstorm |
| Scarlet Forest | Lala Barina | Downpour |
| Oilburst Basin | Nu Udra (black flames) | Firetide |
| Iceshard Cliffs | Jin Dahaad | Freezing cold |
| Ruins of Wyveria | — | — |
Each of the first four regions is ruled by a large monster at the top of its ecosystem, which appears during Inclemency weather and dramatically changes the hunt. The white-flamed monster in the Ruins of Wyveria is a Guardian rather than a regional apex, hence the dash. In total, the game features 5 regular hunting grounds plus 3 special arenas and story locations, along with three peaceful area types: camps, villages, and the Grand Hub.

Endgame Essentials#
| Upgrade Type | Features |
|---|---|
| Tempered monsters | Carried over from Monster Hunter: World, they bear massive old scars that can be opened as wounds and drop Hunter’s Tokens and Artian materials |
| Frenzied monsters | Carried over from Monster Hunter 4, these individuals are infected by the Frenzy virus, making them faster and more aggressive — and they can infect hunters. They appear only in the Iceshard Cliffs |
- The hunter rank cap is HR100, and the long-term loop after graduation revolves around crown collection and the Arch-tempered rotation.
- Ver. 1.021 introduced a 9-star endgame tier: existing 8-star tempered monsters gained 9-star variants with higher HP, damage, and aggression, and 9-star quests are tied to the Appraisal Sigil system.
- Artian Weapons are forged from Artian materials and can be custom-upgraded; Title Update 4’s upgrade system further added set bonuses to existing Artian Weapons.
- Arch-tempered monsters (widely called “Arch-tempered kings” by the community) opened in this order: Rey Dau, Nu Udra, Jin Dahaad, and Arkveld, with the February 18, 2026 Arkveld release closing out the base game. Each opening comes with a matching set of Gamma armor.
- Crown collection tasks you with finding 52 crowns — both smallest and largest gold crowns across the 26 launch large monsters.
- Clearing the ★7 key quest “The Time of Awakening” (Chapter 6-1) is one of the prerequisites for entering the expansion content.
Expansion Preview#
The mega-sized paid expansion Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is planned for a 2027 release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Steam, with cross-platform support. It was first revealed at Summer Game Fest on June 5, 2026, reconfirmed alongside the Prologue Demo on August 5, 2026, and detailed further in the State of Play on September 3, 2026. The announced highlights so far:
- New region “Skybound Eyrie”: an ancient ruins cluster in the clouds above the Dragon’s Tower, revealed once the mist lifts, mixing open wilderness with never-before-seen wildlife.
- New base “Madoi Stronghold”.
- The story is set several years after the base game’s ending, with the Elder Dragon Dalamadur appearing in the Forbidden Lands. Nata has grown into a full expedition member, accompanied by his Seikret, Bangard.
- New monsters: the bird wyvern Araketa, which flies in flocks and surfs air currents released by its wings at high speed, and the Elder Dragon Gundoraja, which manipulates thunderclouds and emerges from the pitch-black clouds above the Skybound Eyrie.
- Returning Elder Dragons: Teostra and Dalamadur are confirmed to appear.
- A new quest rank, “Master Rank”.
- New equipment “Boost Bracer”: fired from a cannonball weapon, it temporarily empowers the hunter and amplifies the traits of each of the 14 weapon types — open a monster up while buffed, then press the advantage during the temporary boost.
- Entry requirements: own the base game, clear the ★7 key quest “The Time of Awakening” (Chapter 6-1), and reach HR40.
- The base game will also receive additional weapon moves and adjustments alongside the expansion (excluding the Boost moves), and a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the base game is confirmed in development (Capcom investor relations announcement, June 8, 2026).
