Main Story#
This page sorts out only the officially disclosed story skeleton of Monster Hunter Wilds: the story premise, the main-story progression, key characters, the Guardians and the final target Arkveld, plus the entry conditions for the expansion. Capcom has not published all dialogue and scene details; this page invents no dialogue, marks no fabricated chapter numbers or quest titles, and offers no interpretation or speculation — all details defer to the in-game text. Mild spoilers below.
Premise and Investigation Goals#
| Element | Official disclosure |
|---|---|
| Starting event | The boy Nata escapes an attack by a mysterious monster and alone brings clues to the Guild |
| Team assembly | The Hunter’s Guild assembles the Forbidden Land survey team, with Guild executive Fabius appointing each unit |
| Investigation goal | Investigate the mysterious monster known as the “White Wraith” |
| Rescue goal | Rescue the Keepers, who came under attack |
| Player role | A hunter ordered to join the survey team, going deep into the Forbidden Land with the unit |
Entering the Forbidden Land requires Guild permission: the region’s ecological information is a total blank, and only after learning of Nata’s discovery did the Guild formally assemble the survey team and grant entry permission. The worldbuilding behind the “Forbidden Land decree” and the ecology lore are in World and Ecology Lore.
How the Main Story Progresses#
The story advances chained through Main Missions; clearing key quests unlocks new regions, new mechanic tutorials, and new system functions. This page describes the progression by phase without chapter numbers or quest titles — in-game quest board names and order are final, and the quest system’s category rules are in Quest Types.
| Phase | Officially disclosed unlocks and tutorials |
|---|---|
| Opening | Enter the Windward Plains with basic hunting tutorials; new systems such as Focus Mode and wounds, plus Seikret mount auto-navigation, unlock in turn |
| Early-mid | Unlock the Scarlet Forest and open the apex-monster ecology investigation lines for each region |
| Mid | Unlock the Oilwell Basin and meet the local settlement of Azuz |
| Mid-late | Unlock the Iceshard Cliffs; after clearing the main story Chapter 4-2 “Lurking Shadows” (from Hunter Rank 15), Frenzied monsters appear in the Iceshard Cliffs |
| Endgame | The investigation lines converge on the final target Arkveld, leading into the story finale |
Among these, Focus Mode and wounds are this game’s core combat change: attacks accumulate wounds on a monster, which can then be broken in a concentrated way under Focus Mode — see Combat System for the specifics. Frenzied monster mechanics, materials, and counters are in the Frenzy section of World and Ecology Lore.
Story Stages and Regional Apexes#
The process of advancing the story is also the process of the Forbidden Land’s fields unfolding in turn. Each field has an apex monster guarding the top of its food chain, appearing only during inclement weather:
| Field | Inclemency | Apex monster | Class |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windward Plains | Sandstorm with large-scale lightning | Rey Dau | Flying Wyvern |
| Scarlet Forest | Downpour | Uth Duna | Leviathan |
| Oilwell Basin | Firespring | Nu Udra | Cephalopod |
| Iceshard Cliffs | Blizzard | Jin Dahaad | Leviathan |
Nu Udra is called the “Black Flame” by the Azuz people of the Oilwell Basin, and this thread is an important mid-story node. Full ecology notes for each field are in Regions and Fields.
Key Characters and Factions#
| Character | Official role |
|---|---|
| Nata | A boy who escaped an attack by a mysterious monster; the reason the survey team formed and the clue-bearing figure traveling with it |
| Alma | The Handler, responsible for quest management and acceptance; in the field she provides hunting info and manages supplies |
| Gemma | The Provider, responsible for weapon and armor production and processing |
| Fabius | Hunter’s Guild executive who assembled the survey team and appointed each unit |
| Olivia and Athos | Survey team member and her Palico buddy; Olivia wields the Hammer and takes special Guild commissions |
| Erik and Werner | The Avis Unit’s Handler and Provider; Erik specializes in biology, Werner in physics and technology |
The survey team divides labor between “Handlers” and “Providers”, and the Avis Unit likewise has members for both roles. Full role explanations are in Characters.
The Guardians: The Construct Twist#
The Guardians are artificial monsters classified as “Constructs”, made by an ancient civilization and driven by Dragontorch energy. They do not eat and do not breed; their activity depends entirely on energy supplied by the Dragontorch, and their ecological niche is set artificially rather than formed by natural evolution. When the story first encounters a Guardian, the official framing is “a monster that cannot exist within an ecosystem” — a presence outside the Guild’s existing field guide and ecological common sense, forming the setting’s biggest reversal.
| Setting | Official disclosure |
|---|---|
| Class | Construct, a separate lineage from naturally evolved monsters |
| Origin | Made by an ancient civilization |
| Energy source | The Dragontorch |
| Number | Six in total |
| Known individuals | Guardian Doshaguma, Guardian Fulgur Anjanath, Guardian Ebony Odogaron, Guardian Rathalos, Guardian Arkveld, and more |
| Head of the Guardians | Zoh Shia |
Detailed notes on the Guardians’ ecological niche and the Construct classification are in World and Ecology Lore.
The Final Target: Arkveld#
Arkveld is the main story’s final target. This Flying Wyvern bears the nickname “White Wraith”, with wings shaped like chains, and was once declared extinct by the Guild; “sightings of an extinct monster” were one of the direct motives for the Guild to assemble the survey team. The survey team’s investigation lines deep into the Forbidden Land ultimately converge on this monster.
Monsters of the Main Story#
The story’s huntable and featured monsters all come from the official launch roster: Chatacabra, Balahara, Lala Barina, Rompololo, Quematrice, Doshaguma, Xu Wu, Ajarakan (a Fanged Beast that turns active during the Firespring), plus the four fields’ apex monsters (see table above). The launch roster contains no Elder Dragon; Gogmazios, added in a later version (December 2025, Ver.1.04), is the base game’s only Elder Dragon — post-clearing additional content, outside the launch story flow. The monster list and their regions are in Monster Field Guide.
After the Credits#
Clearing the story does not mean the content is over; the endgame loop starts with High Rank investigations:
| Content | Details |
|---|---|
| High Rank investigations | Hunter Rank keeps climbing; optional quests, investigations, and tempered individuals form the daily loop |
| Zoh Shia High Rank challenge | After the first title update (April 2025), Zoh Shia returns in a repeatable High Rank form |
| Arch-tempered (with a community nickname) | Five Arch-tempered monsters arrive one by one, capped by Arkveld |
| Frenzy and endgame tiers | Frenzied monsters, the nine-star endgame tier, and the Appraisal Charm system open step by step with version updates |
Full endgame details are in Endgame Systems; the version timeline is in Version Updates.
Linking to the Expansion#
The major expansion Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance was first announced at “Summer Game Fest” on June 5, 2026, planned for a 2027 release. The official conditions to enter the expansion content:
| Condition | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Base game | Own Monster Hunter Wilds |
| Rank | Hunter Rank HR40 |
| Key quest | Clear the ★7 key quest “Awaking From a Dream” (Chapter 6-1) |
“★” is the official star marking for key quests; “Awaking From a Dream” sits in Chapter 6-1 as the key node of the story finale, and HR40 comes naturally along the endgame flow. The expansion’s news trail and version timeline are in Version Updates.
Experience and Pacing Notes#
| Tip | Details |
|---|---|
| Key cutscenes | Story cutscenes take a large share of the runtime and key scenes cannot be skipped — plan longer single play sessions |
| Difficulty positioning | Low Rank story difficulty is gentle; the difficulty weight sits in the post-clearing High Rank and tempered lines |
| Side and event content | Side missions and each version’s event quests flesh out base characters and world details |
| New Game Plus | This game has no NG+ design; clearing leads straight into the High Rank loop |
FAQ#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| How long is the main story | Capcom has not published a standard clear time; real times vary widely with multiplayer and proficiency — statistics targeting the Platinum trophy (52 crowns covering all launch monsters, among other conditions) run about 75-100 hours |
| Can the story be skipped | Key story scenes cannot be skipped; non-key cutscenes can partly be skipped |
| Is it connected to Monster Hunter: World | This game’s stage, the “Forbidden Land”, is a different region from the New World, with no direct character continuity |
| Does it end after Zoh Shia | The main story concludes there, but the High Rank loop, Arch-tempered line, and free updates keep adding content |
| Does this page contain every story detail | No — this page sorts out only the officially disclosed skeleton; in-game text is final for dialogue and scene details |
Stated once more: from start to finish, this page sorts out only the officially announced, in-game-verifiable story skeleton — no invented dialogue, scene details, interpretation, or speculation; chapter numbers, quest titles, and flow details all defer to the actual in-game text.
