Last Epoch Guide#
Last Epoch is a moderately hardcore action RPG built around timelines, developed and self-published by the Canadian indie studio Eleventh Hour Games. It left early access when the 1.0 release launched on Steam on February 21, 2024. Players travel between eras of the same continent, using three interlocking systems — skill trees, forging, and the endgame timelines — to grow an ordinary exile into a being capable of standing against the Void.
It stands apart from its peers for three reasons: every skill has its own skill tree, forging tells you the price of success before you commit, and trading is split into two mutually exclusive faction routes. Those three decisions give the game more strategic depth than it first appears.

Where the Cycles Stand#
Last Epoch runs on a season model the developers call “cycles.” Understanding the numbering is the only reliable way to tell whether a fact on any other guide page is still inside its validity window.
| Stage | Cycle | Launch Date | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full release | 1.0 launch | 2024-02-21 | Ended |
| Cycle 1 | Harbingers of Ruin | 2024-07-09 | Ended |
| Cycle 2 | Tombs of the Erased | 2025-04-17 | Ended |
| Cycle 3 | Beneath Ancient Skies | 2025-08-21 | Ended |
| Cycle 4 | Shattered Omens | 2026-03-26 | Active, ends 2026-10-01 |
| Cycle 5 | Rage of the Frostborn | 2026-10-01 | Launching soon |
Cycle 5, Rage of the Frostborn, centers on Morditas, the Demigod of Bloodshed, returning to Eterra for revenge. Its seasonal mechanic is the Rage of Morditas, and the cycle also brings three new skills and an overhaul of both trading factions. It goes live on October 1, 2026 at 11:00 AM US Central Time, which is the early hours of October 2 in Beijing.
When a cycle ends, seasonal characters move wholesale into the Legacy realm. Gear and characters are not lost — they are simply kept apart from the fresh characters you will roll in the next cycle. That is why veterans tidy up their stash before every cycle flip.
How It Compares to Its Peers#
| Aspect | Last Epoch | Diablo 4 | Path of Exile 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skill acquisition | Unlocked by leveling, each skill on its own tree | Unlocked by drops | Skill gems |
| Crafting | Forging Potential is predictable, upgrade paths are set | Tempering plus aspects | Currency crafting |
| Trading | Faction choice: self-found or marketplace | Fully open, with a trade house | Free trading plus auction house |
| Passive structure | Base passives plus mastery skill trees | Paragon boards | The massive passive tree |
| Endgame loop | Timelines, blessings, and dungeons | Nightmares, the Pit, and dungeons | Atlas maps |
| Signature mechanics | Monolith corruption, idols, Legendary Potential | Vessel of Hatred, mercenaries | The Atlas, Ascendancies |
The World of Eterra#
The story takes place on a planet called Eterra. The creator goddess Eterra shaped the world from her temple in the sky; her brother, the Observer, governs fate and time and is regarded as the one who peers into the flow of time itself. A cataclysm known as the Ruin let the Void seep in through temporal rifts, tearing the world into refuges that can no longer reach one another.
The player wields an artifact called the Epoch, which allows leaps between four eras:
| Era | What Defines It | What You Meet There |
|---|---|---|
| Ancient Era | A savage age ruled by dragons and primal beasts | Chapter 10 story, the Observer’s past |
| Divine Era | An age when the gods walked among mortals | Heorot, Lagon, Majasa |
| Imperial Era | The medieval stage of the undead empire | Maj’Elka, the Immortal Citadel |
| Ruined Era | The post-Ruin wasteland | The Last Refuge, imperial remnants |
The same map therefore looks completely different in each era, and plenty of quests require shuttling between two eras to move forward.
Three Things to Understand Early#
Masteries Are Permanent — Skills Are Not#
After reaching the End of Time (usually around level 25), you choose one of your class’s three masteries, and that choice is permanent for the character — there is no undo. Skill and passive points, by contrast, can be respecced at any time for a small amount of gold. So experiment freely with skills early on, but choose your mastery with care.
Forging Is Resource Planning, Not Gambling#
Forging shows exactly how much Forging Potential each operation consumes and the success probability of every affix upgrade. You can judge precisely whether a step is worth chasing instead of rolling the dice on your gear. This is the core difference between Last Epoch and most of its peers.
Your Faction Decides How You Get Gear#
Reach Chapter 9 and you must join one of two item factions: the Circle of Fortune, a self-sufficient route with prophecy-targeted rewards, or the Merchant’s Guild, which opens the global marketplace at the Bazaar. Switching is allowed, but items obtained under one faction cannot be equipped after you switch — so in practice almost nobody flip-flops.
What’s Coming Next#
The 2026 roadmap confirms the next major release is the Orobyss expansion, bringing two new story chapters, a new pinnacle boss, a long-in-development skill customization system, and new corruption tiers for the Monolith of Fate. It is free for anyone who already owns the PC version, and it introduces a new paid class category, the Paradox class.
The real warning: Last Epoch’s cycle gaps are noticeably longer than its peers’ — the historical median is close to half a year. When you see claims that a new cycle is “almost here,” confirm the date against the official forum’s roadmap thread instead of extrapolating from past intervals.
How to Read This Guide#
Players at different stages care about completely different things, so read in the order below for maximum efficiency.
| Where You Are | Suggested Reading Order |
|---|---|
| Just starting out | Beginner basics, the class system, core gameplay |
| Stuck on the campaign | Chapter walkthroughs, class builds, items and affixes |
| New to the endgame | Monolith timelines, blessings, endgame overview |
| Pushing high difficulty | Forging and crafting, item bases, advanced techniques |
| Switching builds | Your class’s build pages, then back to the skill system |
One caveat before anything else: Last Epoch’s cycles arrive at long intervals, so whether a guide is still accurate depends on which cycle it was written for. Whenever a page mentions the “current version” or “this cycle,” cross-check it against the cycle table above.

FAQ#
When did Last Epoch leave early access?#
The 1.0 release launched on Steam on February 21, 2024.
How many classes and masteries are there?#
Five base classes — Sentinel, Mage, Rogue, Primalist, and Acolyte — each with three masteries, for fifteen in total.
Can I change my mastery later?#
No. The mastery choice is permanent for that character. Skill and passive points can be reset for a small gold cost, so early build experimentation is safe.
What happens to my character when a cycle ends?#
Seasonal characters transfer to the Legacy realm with their gear intact. They are simply kept separate from the new characters created in the next cycle.
How often do new cycles come out?#
Notably slower than the ARPG norm — the historical median gap is close to half a year, so confirm dates against the official roadmap rather than extrapolating.
Do I have to pick a trading faction?#
Yes. At Chapter 9 you choose between the Circle of Fortune, which boosts your own drops and grants prophecies, and the Merchant’s Guild, which opens the Bazaar marketplace. You can switch, but items obtained under one faction cannot be equipped after switching.
When does Cycle 5 start?#
October 1, 2026 at 11:00 AM US Central Time — the early hours of October 2 in Beijing. It adds three new skills and overhauls both factions.
