Last Epoch Beginner Guide: Starting Out and Leveling Up#
Last Epoch’s barrier to entry isn’t mechanical skill — it’s knowing when to do what. The game hands you five systems at once (skill trees, passive trees, crafting, idols, and factions), and that is exactly where new players drown in information. This walkthrough puts the order in place; finish it and you can head straight into the game.
Step 1: Choose a Base Class#
Any of the five base classes can carry you through the campaign, but their early-game feel differs a lot.
| Base Class | Early-Game Friendliness | In One Line | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sentinel | High | Heavy-armor melee that can tank and hit back | Players who like pushing forward and don’t want to dodge everything |
| Primalist | High | Beast summons or shapeshifted melee | Players who want fewer inputs and let pets do the damage |
| Acolyte | Medium-High | Necromancer minions or damage over time | Players who enjoy covering the screen and clearing packs |
| Mage | Medium | Ranged casting, high burst, fragile body | Players who can accept positioning demands |
| Rogue | Medium | Agile dual-wielding or ranged crits | Players who care about feel and crit feedback |
The three safest directions for a new player are Beastmaster (minions), Necromancer (minions), and Forge Guard (summoned weapons and armor). What they share is that your output doesn’t depend on manual aiming, so the margin for error is high.
Step 2: Understand That Your Mastery Is Permanent#
The decision players regret most lives right here.
- When you reach The End of Time (around level 25), you choose a Mastery, and that character can never change it afterward
- Skill points and passive points can be refunded for gold at any time, and the cost climbs slowly with level
- A Mastery unlocks that branch’s exclusive passives and some skill tree nodes; it is not a cosmetic reskin
So the correct approach is: experiment with skills freely early on, but read up on all three masteries of your class before you commit.
Step 3: What to Do While Leveling#
Prioritize Resistances, Not Damage#
The most common death while leveling is getting one-shot because resistances are too low. Chapter 5 is the widely recognized difficulty wall, where poison and physical damage spike hard; bring both resistance types above 40% before you enter Chapter 5. The cheapest fix for resistances is crafting, not waiting for drops.
Turn On Your Loot Filter Early#
Open the filter with its hotkey and set at least one rule that hides white and blue items. Once the screen is clean, you can actually see the Rare, Exalted, and Unique items that are worth picking up.
Buy the Silver Ring on Sight#
The Chapter 1 merchant sells Silver Rings, and their implicit affix is movement speed. Swap one on early and the entire leveling process runs more smoothly.
Craft Throughout the Game, Not Just at Endgame#
The crafting panel is available at any time. Using affix shards to shore up life and resistances on your current gear is far faster than waiting for a perfect drop. Many players stall out because they only farm and never craft.
Step 4: When Can You Head Into Endgame#
You can enter the Monolith of Fate as early as after Chapter 2 of the campaign, but finishing the story first is strongly recommended.
- Completing the campaign adds up to about 15 extra passive points and every idol slot
- Chapter 9 unlocks the faction choice, the starting point of the endgame economy
- Your completion of Chapters 9 and 10 directly affects whether you can jump straight into late-game endgame content
Five Common Mistakes#
| Mistake | Reality |
|---|---|
| Stacking damage before survivability | When resistances and life fall short, high damage never gets dealt; fix survival first |
| Splitting skill points evenly | Concentrating on one or two main skills pays far more than spreading them thin |
| Picking a Mastery casually and swapping later | Masteries cannot be changed; the only option is rerolling a new character |
| Saving crafting for endgame | Crafting is an all-game tool; use shards to fix key stats from the mid-game on |
| Farming only one timeline | Different timelines offer complementary blessings and drops; rotate between them |
How to Allocate Time on Your Leveling Route#
Break the leveling phase into three segments; the resource priorities are completely different in each.
| Phase | Main Goal | Resource Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Early campaign | Establish baseline survivability | Resistances, life, movement speed |
| Late campaign | Round out your skill setup | Skill-specific affixes, idols |
| Entering endgame | Get the timeline loop running | Forging potential management, targeted blessings |
The One-Line Summary#
Pick a forgiving class first, read all three masteries before locking one in, treat resistances and the loot filter as top priorities during the campaign, and craft as you go instead of hoarding materials. Do these four things and the first few dozen hours get much smoother.
What to Do in the First Twenty Levels#
In the opening stretch, the goal isn’t getting stronger — it’s touching every system once, because many things are a pain to fix later.
| Level Range | Focus |
|---|---|
| Levels 1-5 | Learn basic attacks and movement skills; try a few different skills |
| Levels 5-10 | Decide your main skill’s direction and concentrate your points on it |
| Levels 10-15 | Start crafting resistances; turn on the loot filter |
| Levels 15-20 | Close the resistance gaps and prepare for the first difficulty wall |
The most common waste in this window is spreading skill points across four or five skills. Points are scarce while leveling, and spreading them thin leaves every skill weak, keeps clear speed low, and actually makes the game more tiring.
Which Stats to Watch on the Character Sheet#
Faced with a screen full of stats, beginners rarely know where to look. Watch these four first.
| Stat | Why It Comes First |
|---|---|
| Life | Determines how many mistakes you can survive |
| Each resistance type | While below the threshold, any damage type can be lethal |
| Main damage type bonuses | Determines whether your damage forms a coherent build |
| Movement speed | Affects clear speed and how well you dodge |
Everything else can wait until these four are stable. The goal while leveling is “not dying”, not “killing faster”.
A Note on Difficulty Choices#
The game lets you take on lower-level timelines early in the campaign. That is not a shortcut, but it is an effective workaround when you hit a difficulty wall.
| Situation | Advice |
|---|---|
| The campaign is moving smoothly | Keep pushing the story; collect passive points and idol slots |
| Stuck on a boss | Go farm a few lower-level timelines, then come back |
| Resistances clearly insufficient | Stop and fix resistances first; don’t force through |
An Easy-to-Miss Check#
If your passive points or idol slots fall short of what a guide promises, you have almost certainly missed side quests. These rewards are permanent, catching up takes very little time, and the impact on your character’s power is direct.
