Assassin’s Creed Shadows Guide#

Assassin’s Creed Shadows was developed by Ubisoft Quebec and published by Ubisoft, launching on March 20, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC — the first series entry set in Japan. The story follows two protagonists, Naoe, an Iga ninja, and Yasuke, an African samurai serving Oda Nobunaga, in a dual narrative that lets stealth assassination and head-on assault run side by side across the same open world.

The game is built on an enhanced Anvil engine, with dynamic lighting, destructible props, and rotating seasons that keep the world feeling alive. Its defining features include the dynamic season system (which shapes both stealth and combat), objective intel and the scout mechanic, Hideout construction, and an exploration model built around investigation rather than a map full of question marks.

World and Story Setup#

The game centers on the thousand-year struggle between the Brotherhood of Assassins, who pursue freedom, and the Templar Order, who pursue order, seen through the eyes of the two protagonists. The story opens in 1582, during Oda Nobunaga’s campaign against Iga: Naoe’s village is destroyed in the fighting and her father Nagato falls in battle, and she survives to hunt down those responsible. Yasuke, meanwhile, is swept into Nobunaga’s final years and the political turmoil that follows. Both protagonists interact with historical figures such as Oda Nobunaga and Akechi Mitsuhide, and take part in major historical events such as the Honnō-ji Incident, presented in fictionalized form.

The Two Protagonists#

Dimension Naoe Yasuke
Role Iga ninja assassin Samurai
Focus Stealth, assassination, grappling-hook parkour Head-on fights, breaking formations, heavy weapons
Weapons Tachi, Kusarigama, Tanto, Naginata, Teppo Odachi (long tachi), Naginata, Kanabo, Bow, Teppo
Combat style Agile, dodging, parry counters, vault executions Raw strength, poise, blocking, charges
Stealth Hides in shadows, throws shuriken to douse lights, slips beneath floors Limited; prefers to fight in the open

The two share one progression system: skill upgrades can benefit both, and each has an independent skill tree and equipment customization.

Core Systems#

Light, Shadow, and Stealth#

  • Hiding in shadow: Naoe can stay out of enemy sight in darkness and shadow, indoors and out; throwing a shuriken to smash a lantern creates a dark zone.
  • Silent movement: crouch-walking crosses nightingale floors without a sound, and she can crawl prone through low openings.
  • Observe mode: gathers intel on targets at a glance, and doubles as scouting while perched somewhere high.
  • Scouts and intel: target locations are not revealed by default; recruit and dispatch scouts to narrow the field using clues.

Head-On Combat#

  • Yasuke: built around blocking and countering — stand your ground, absorb the enemy’s attack, then answer it. The “posture” mechanic returns, with light and heavy attacks, dodges, and parries forming the core loop.
  • Naoe: the agile school — dodge, parry-counter, and vault over enemies to execute them.
  • Weapon mastery: every weapon type has its own skill tree, and proficiency rises step by step.

Seasons and Weather#

  • Four-season rotation: spring and summer bring dense vegetation that favors stealth; autumn and winter thin the cover and favor head-on fights. Winter freezes lake surfaces and buries footprints in snow.
  • Dynamic weather: strong wind cuts ranged accuracy, and rain dulls enemy perception.

The Hideout#

In a hidden valley you build a customizable hideout, placing buildings, decorations, and space for companions. Upgrading the hideout supports crafting, scouting, resource management, and companion relationships, making it the core hub of progression and logistics.

Getting-Started Essentials#

  1. Walk on both legs: don’t train only one character — skills and gear are separate, and rotating between the two protagonists covers more situations.
  2. Work the light and shadow: night and shade are Naoe’s home turf; douse the lights to create dark zones, then slip in.
  3. Recruit scouts: locating targets through scouts and clues beats charging straight across the map.
  4. Upgrade the hideout early: it is the heart of crafting and resource management, and early investment pays off for the rest of the game.
  5. Plan routes by season: stealth and travel conditions change with the seasons, so adapt to them.
