You play Skif, a stalker exploring, surviving and hunting for answers inside the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone. The Zone is packed with anomalies invisible to the naked eye, radioactive artifacts and packs of mutants, while human factions fight each other over territory and secrets.

Core Gameplay Loop#

The game rests on a handful of interlocking systems:

  1. Exploration and survival: one seamless open world split into 20 regions. Six survival readings need attention at once — health, stamina, bleeding, radiation, hunger and sleep. Drinking water is confirmed, but there is no thirst meter.
  2. Anomalies and artifacts: anomalies are almost invisible, so you probe their edges by throwing bolts and then pinpoint the artifacts inside with a detector. Most artifacts emit radiation and must be carried in a container.
  3. Combat and gear: weapons fall into eight categories — melee, pistols, shotguns, SMGs, assault rifles, sniper rifles, machine guns and heavy weapons — and lose durability with use. Repairs and upgrades can only be done by technicians back at a base; there is no crafting or cooking system.
  4. Factions and quests: the Zone holds 11 major factions, among them Loners, Bandits, Duty and Freedom. Roughly 35 main quests funnel you toward one of four endings determined by three key choices.
  5. Living world: the A-Life system keeps simulating humans and mutants, so characters keep “living” once they leave your sight; from patch 1.7, factions also fight over territory.
