Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Guide#
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the debut title from France’s Sandfall Interactive, officially released on April 24, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and joined Xbox Game Pass on launch day. It stitches turn-based command combat and real-time reaction play together — you think you are calculating turns, but your hands are constantly making timing checks. I’m Chasun, and this hub first gets “what this game actually is” straight, then walks through its systems in detail.
A note on status: everything here is compiled from officially published material and from mechanics as actually implemented in the game. Where exact numbers are involved, treat the version in your own hands as the authority.

One warning worth repeating: the game has no Chinese voice acting — Simplified Chinese covers the interface and subtitles only. This detail gets misreported in the community again and again; the official store page’s voice column lists only French and English, so don’t buy it expecting Chinese dubs.
Story Opening: the Monolith, the Paintress, and the Gommage#
The story is set in a world modeled on late-19th-century France’s “Belle Époque.” Every year, a being called the Paintress paints a number onto the Monolith; everyone whose age has reached that number turns to smoke and vanishes in the same instant — an event known as the Gommage. The number shrinks year by year, and the erased keep multiplying.
Humanity’s last city is Lumière. To end the cycle, people have sent out expedition after expedition, numbered all the way to 32, with none surviving. You play Expedition 33.
| Key setting | What it means |
|---|---|
| Paintress | The being that paints a number on the Monolith each year — the source of the Gommage |
| Monolith | Where the Paintress paints, and the destination of every expedition |
| Gommage | The once-a-year event in which everyone who meets the age threshold turns to ash in an instant |
| Lumière | Humanity’s last city and the expeditions’ departure point |
| Numbering | The first 32 expeditions all failed; this game’s protagonists are the 33rd |
Why It’s Not Ordinary Turn-Based#
The backbone is standard command-based turn combat: action order is decided by speed, and skills cost action points (AP). The real dividing line is that the game does not pause when enemies attack.
You have to react at the exact moment an enemy attack lands, and there are three possible responses:
| Defensive action | Timing check | Payoff on success |
|---|---|---|
| Parry | Tight window, demands precision | Each successful parry restores AP; catching an entire combo triggers a counterattack |
| Dodge | Generous window, high tolerance | Fully avoids damage — good for learning an attack’s rhythm |
| Jump | Only works on attacks with a jump prompt | For area attacks that cannot be parried or dodged |
This means “execution” is not optional decoration in this game. That said, the game does provide an on-ramp: in the settings you can switch QTE inputs to automatic and lower the difficulty to Story mode, which visibly widens the timing windows without cutting anything out of the mechanics.
The Six Playable Party Members#
Three members fight at a time while the rest wait on the bench; reserves earn experience too.
| Member | Weapon | Core mechanic | Joins |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gustave | Sword and pistol | Multi-hit strings build Overcharge; unleash a heavy strike once it is full | Prologue |
| Lune | Staff | Generates and spends elemental Stains to empower spells and healing | Prologue |
| Maelle | Rapier | Switches between Offensive, Defensive, and Virtuose stances, changing damage and AP costs | Early Act 1 |
| Sciel | Scythe | Stacks Foretell on enemies, then harvests it all at once in Twilight | Late Act 1 |
| Verso | Sword and dagger | Perfection rating — keep hits and dodges coming to hold a high rank for more output | Early Act 2 |
| Monoco | Beast cane | Learns skills from defeated enemies and switches masks to change movesets | Late Act 2 |
Official localized names for the cast differ between versions and reference sites; this hub standardizes on the names above, keeping the widely used English spellings for easy comparison.
Progression: Attributes, Skills, Pictos, and Lumina#
Each level grants 3 attribute points plus 1 skill point, with a level cap of 99. There are five attributes:
| Attribute | Effect |
|---|---|
| Vitality | Raises max health |
| Might | Raises attack damage |
| Agility | Raises action frequency and decides turn order on the action bar |
| Defence | Lowers damage taken |
| Luck | Raises critical-hit rate |
On skills: each character can equip 6 at a time, and everything else can be swapped in from the skill list at any moment. Mis-spent points never force a new save — attribute and skill points can be reset for free at an Expedition Flag.
The core of the equipment side is Pictos and Lumina Points: an equipped Picto provides stat bonuses and special effects, and once it has been used in 4 battles it counts as mastered. After mastery, its passive enters the team-shared Lumina pool, where Lumina Points let any party member carry it without occupying a Pictos slot. The design ensures a Picto you have already mastered never goes to waste.
Difficulty and New Game Plus#
The game offers three difficulty levels, adjustable in the settings at any time:
| Difficulty | Orientation |
|---|---|
| Story | Focuses on experiencing the story; enemy stats are lowered and timing windows widened |
| Expedition | The officially recommended standard — normal stats and normal timing |
| Expert | For players who know the systems; denser enemy offense and stricter timing |
After clearing the game you can start a New Game Plus, carrying character growth over into a harder challenge. In addition, the December 2025 free update added a new explorable area, extra Endless Tower battles, new Pictos and weapons, and a photo mode — all of it free to everyone who owns the game; there are no paid expansions.
How This Hub Handles Facts#
This hub follows four self-imposed rules, written out here so you can check them at any time:
- Separate fact from inference. Release info, platforms, and languages follow the official store and announcements; mechanics follow what the game actually presents; anything not yet verified on this site is simply left out rather than guessed at.
- No invented numbers. Skill multipliers, drop rates, and experience curves are never filled in from memory; when something matters, this hub gives you the judging criteria instead of a made-up value.
- No speaking for the developers. Any “the studio has not announced X” statement is used only when it can point to a specific official source; otherwise we state only our own status of compilation.
- In-game terms defer to your client. For stances, statuses, and regions this site uses common community translations with English names attached where possible; if your client displays something different, your client wins.
