Mass Effect Legendary Edition Guide#

Mass Effect Legendary Edition is BioWare’s 2021 remaster of the complete Mass Effect trilogy, published by Electronic Arts and released on May 14, 2021 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One (backward compatible on PS5 and Xbox Series X). It bundles all three games plus every one of the 40+ single-player DLC packs with upgraded visuals and system-wide improvements. You play Commander Shepard, and the trilogy’s defining trait is that choices carry forward: dialogue decisions, squadmate fates, and moral leanings all shape later games through full save import.

This hub treats the trilogy as one continuous campaign: story-choice summaries, all six classes, squadmate loyalty and romance, the Paragon/Renegade morality system, per-game walkthroughs, and collection and achievement planning.

Trilogy Playthrough Advice#

  1. First playthrough: pick the Soldier or Vanguard class and start on normal difficulty.
  2. Plan your saves: make sure ME1’s major moral choices are deliberate — they influence the later story.
  3. DLC timing: in ME2, play Lair of the Shadow Broker after the suicide mission.
  4. War Assets: in ME3, complete as many side missions as possible to maximize your War Assets.
  5. Romance continuity: keeping the same romance across games unlocks special story scenes.
  6. Paragon/Renegade: commit to one moral route to unlock its dedicated dialogue options.
  7. Explore: explore every area in each game and do not leave collectibles behind.

How This Hub Is Organized#

The Chinese section behind this hub splits its coverage into twenty sub-guides: a beginner’s primer (character creation, control settings, difficulty modes, imported saves), a full trilogy story summary with key choices and ending differences, a character roster, the combat system and its evolution, a complete weapons catalog with mods and recommended setups, the six-class system with skill pairings, and dedicated walkthroughs for ME1 (planet list, main missions, UNC assignments, Mako exploration), ME2 (recruitment and loyalty missions plus the suicide mission), and ME3 (Priority missions, War Assets, and ending preparation). Topical guides cover the full squadmate list and best pairings, every romance option with continuity rules, the Paragon/Renegade framework with reputation checks, major boss fights with per-class strategies, enemy factions and tactics, key locations and hubs, a side-quest list with missable checks, all collectibles including the Codex and ship models, every achievement with unlock tips, hidden weapons and Easter eggs, and advanced play on combat technique, save planning, and resource optimization.

For quick orientation by game: ME1 material covers its walkthrough, weapon list, and enemy roster; ME2 material covers the walkthrough, squadmates, and the suicide mission; ME3 material covers the walkthrough, War Assets, and the ending variants. By theme: combat spans the combat system, classes, and weapons; characters span the roster, squadmates, and romance; story spans plot analysis, morality, and secrets; collection spans collectibles and achievements; missions span quests, bosses, and enemies; and exploration spans the areas guide and ME1’s uncharted planets.

Core Gameplay#

The series fuses third-person shooter combat with choice-driven role-playing narrative. You play Commander Shepard, steering the plot through left-or-right dialogue decisions while directing two squadmates in battle. The trilogy’s pacing is roughly even: main missions advance the story, loyalty and side missions dig into character depth, and galaxy scanning plus planetary exploration supply resources and collectibles. The core loop can be summed up as “dialogue choices shape the story, combat tests your build, and exploration feeds your growth” — the three interlock so that every stretch of play gives clear feedback.

Trilogy Flow at a Glance#

Stage Core goal Main settings
Mass Effect 1 Track the rogue Spectre Saren and stop him from opening the Reaper beacon The Citadel, Ilos, and multiple explorable planets
Mass Effect 2 Assemble an elite squad and take the Omega 4 Relay to destroy the Collectors The Normandy, Omega, Illium, and the suicide mission
Mass Effect 3 Rally the galaxy’s War Assets and launch the final counterattack The Citadel, Tuchanka, Rannoch, and Earth

The Combat System#

Combat evolves visibly across the trilogy. Mass Effect 1 uses overheating weapons and crosshair bloom, so the pace is slower. Mass Effect 2 moves to ammo-based weapons and introduces snap-to-cover, and the feel matures. Mass Effect 3 keeps the ammo system while adding power-combo explosions and a lightweight encumbrance model, letting you chain reactions by detonating enemies you set on fire. The three defense layers — shields, armor, and barriers — each have their counters, and a smart power loadout is usually more efficient than raw firepower.

The Squadmate System#

Across the trilogy you can recruit more than twenty squadmates, each with a dedicated background, loyalty mission, and skill tree. ME1 squad powers grow through unlockable upgrades, while ME2 and ME3 reinforce them through loyalty missions and evolved power branches. Adjust your squad to the enemy in front of you: bring tech-focused squadmates against synthetics and biotic damage-dealers against biotic enemies. Squadmates both soak firepower and set up power combos with Shepard.

The Morality System#

Paragon and Renegade are the series’ signature moral framework. Paragon options sit at the top right of the dialogue wheel and Renegade options at the bottom right; sticking with one route long enough unlocks dedicated reputation dialogue choices that can defuse a firefight in a line or two. The system does not punish neutrality, but leaning hard to one side accumulates reputation steadily, which pays off at key story beats. Your moral leanings do not directly change the main ending, but they deeply shape squadmate trust and how the various factions treat you.

The Class System#

The six classes define Shepard’s power leanings: Soldier focuses on weapon suppression, Adept masters biotic crowd control, Engineer manipulates tech gadgets, Infiltrator combines sniping with stealth, Vanguard charges in for close-quarters brawling, and Sentinel balances tech and biotics. Your class is not a one-time lock — skill points are freely assigned on level-up, and the weapon-weight system supports varied loadout plans. Beginners should start with Soldier or Vanguard, while experienced players can try Engineer or Infiltrator.

Save Import and Endings#

Save import is one of the series’ most important mechanisms. Key ME1 choices — the fate of the rachni queen and the Council among them — carry into later games as dialogue, missions, and War Assets. ME2’s squadmate survivors and the fate of the Collector base likewise shape ME3’s plot and your final military strength. To unlock the best ending experience, plan every moral and life-or-death decision from the first game onward, so the trilogy plays as one continuous story.

Version Differences#

The original Mass Effect 3’s online pass and its multiplayer tie-ins are integrated into Legendary Edition, and all squadmate DLC is unlocked by default with no extra payment. If you previously played on older platforms, you can import your old saves on the new platform, with carryover content identical to the original release.

Getting Into the Series#
