Death Stranding 2 Guide#

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach was developed by Kojima Productions under director Hideo Kojima and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It launched on PlayStation 5 on June 26, 2025, and after the review embargo lifted it scored 91 on Metacritic with a “Must-Play” badge.

The game carries forward the first title’s core theme of “connecting the world” while moving the stage from the United States to Mexico and Australia: Sam and Fragile’s crew board the ship Magellan and set out on a cross-continental delivery odyssey to extend the chiral network and open the plate gates.

While keeping the “porter” loop intact, this installment substantially strengthens active combat, vehicles, and infrastructure: new armed vehicles that can mount robotic arms, stun and other non-lethal takedown tools, jump ramps that can catapult Sam across gaps, and terrain that shifts dynamically with the day-night cycle and natural disasters.

The pacing is faster than the first game and the storytelling is easier to sink into, and many outlets called it the most “playable” Kojima-style work yet.

World and Story Background#

Eleven months after the events of the first game, the legendary porter Sam Porter Bridges has retired and is living a quiet life with his adopted daughter Lou. Fragile’s arrival breaks the calm — she has founded a company called Drawbridge, and under contract from the UCA she intends to extend the chiral network into Mexico, then push through the legendary plate gates to bring Australia, on the far side of the Earth, into the network as well.

What Sam faces along the way is more than terrain and weather: a red-clad cult and the Automated Public Assistance Company (APAC) are scheming in the shadows, his old nemesis Higgs has returned at the head of an army of Ghost mechs, and the mysterious Neil Vana appears to share some deeper connection with Lou.

Core Gameplay Systems#

Delivery and Transport#

  • Order system: take an order, carry the cargo, deliver it, and earn a delivery grade (from E up to S, which feeds achievements such as “complete 30 S-rank orders”).
  • Weight and balance: the higher you stack the cargo, the harder the walking gets; vehicles and exoskeletons take significant pressure off.
  • Vehicles: the Tri-Cruiser three-wheel motorcycle, the Pickup Off-Roader, the Floating Carrier, and the Magellan transport ship.
  • Infrastructure: roads, bridges, zip lines, the Monorail, and Jump Ramps — all of it can be shared with other players.

Combat#

  • Non-lethal tools: stun weapons, smoke grenades, and rope restraints let you subdue MULEs without tripping an alarm, so you can loot more of their resources.
  • Lethal weapons: rifles, sniper rifles, grenade launchers, and blood grenades, for dealing with Ghost mechs and large BTs.
  • Battle Guitar: a new melee weapon that discharges electric shocks, derived from Higgs’s signature look.
  • Stealth: quickly restrain enemies who have not spotted you, or use Dollman to scout how the enemy is positioned.

Weather and Disasters#

  • Day-night cycle: BTs are more active at night and visibility is worse, which makes nighttime a poor time for newcomers to explore.
  • Natural disasters: dust storms interfere with sightlines, Gate Quakes collapse your footholds, wildfires spread and cut off roads, floods and downpours turn river crossings into crises, and avalanches reshape the terrain.
  • Tarfall: the weak-point areas of tar-covered mechs — throw blood grenades to create a blood mist, then focus your fire.

Getting-Started Essentials#

  1. Lay down infrastructure first: roads, bridges, and zip lines are the key to saving effort — the earlier you hook into the network, the easier everything becomes.
  2. Prioritize unlocking vehicles: the three-wheeled Tri-Cruiser becomes available as soon as the first region ends, and it drastically shortens long-haul delivery times.
  3. Make good use of the VR training room: inside the Drawbridge base you can freely practice throwing, firearms, and melee timing.
  4. Be careful traveling at night: BTs are more active after dark, so newer players should plan their routes in daylight.
  5. Non-lethal pays better: subduing enemies keeps their cargo and resources intact and avoids damaging your own goods.

Version Status and Long-Term Updates#

As of 2026 the game remains a PS5 platform title. A PC port is widely expected but has not been officially announced.

If official patches, DLC, or cross-platform news arrive, the Version Updates sub-guide covers how to verify them and which channels to watch.
