Beginner’s Guide#

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl starts you with no class selection and no talent points — you play the stalker Skif from scratch, gearing up by scavenging, earning by saving, and surviving on your own judgment. This page walks you through your first night in the exclusion zone and clears up the opening-stage rules new players most often miss.

First, three things that are easy to get wrong:

  • There is no equipment selection at the start — no “balanced/combat/stealth loadout” presets exist; all gear comes from in-game acquisition
  • There is no XP or leveling system — growth shows up in your gear, artifacts, and understanding of the rules
  • The currency is the Coupon (symbol ꝁ) — the series’ old rubles are gone in this game

The Opening: Lesser Zone and Zalissya#

  • The game starts in the Lesser Zone; opening missions like “A Tough Awakening” teach you the basic controls
  • The core settlement is Zalissya village: traders, technicians, and quest givers gather here — your first supply anchor
  • The story mission “There and Back Again” grants your first detector, the Echo — don’t hunt for artifacts in anomaly fields before you have it
  • Keep your activity inside the Lesser Zone for the opening stage; clear the main story and local side missions before pushing outward

Difficulty Selection#

Difficulty Good for Rule notes
Rookie Shooter newcomers Standard tier, highest forgiveness
Stalker Most players The intended experience
Veteran Shooter veterans Higher threat
Master Hardcore players The new highest difficulty added in 1.7; locked in at character creation, and saving is only allowed when leaving hubs and at certain story nodes
  • New players should start on Rookie or Stalker: learn vitals and anomalies first, pressure later
  • Master is a one-way door — take it after you know the routes. For extra spice, stack Expedition mode (new in 1.7, combinable with other difficulties)
  • Custom rules (new in 2.0) lock in at the start; not recommended for a first playthrough

The Six Survival Vitals#

This game’s vitals run deeper than most shooters — six of them:

Vital If it degrades Restored by
Health Zero means death Medical supplies, rest
Stamina Running and jumping restricted Stopping to recover, eating
Bleeding Constant HP drain until collapse Bandages
Radiation Steadily erodes health Anti-rad drugs, leaving the source
Hunger Status recovery slows Eating
Sleep Energy drops, affecting performance Sleeping at camp
  • Drinking water is officially confirmed, but there is no thirst mechanic — the “thirst meter” you read about online has nothing to do with this game
  • Treatment priority: bleeding > radiation > hunger > sleep; always stop bleeding first
  • There are no broken bones or poisoning states here — the six vitals above are all you manage

Opening Recommendations#

Tip Why
Manage your weight An overloaded backpack wrecks movement and stamina; pack for the destination and sell junk back at base
Stock anti-rad drugs Contaminated zones and irradiated artifacts both accumulate rads; without drugs, stay away
Get a suppressor early Quieter shots don’t alert nearby enemies; stealth clears save resources over frontal assaults
Save often Build the manual-save habit with dedicated slots before key moments; outside Master, free saving is your biggest safety net
Loot everything Early resources are scarce; battlefield items and ammo are always worth grabbing
Listen to NPCs Settlement and camp chatter often carries leads and job directions
Trust no one The Zone has no absolute allies; before taking a job, think about whose standing it damages

How to Spend Your First Few Hours#

Stage Goal Key actions
First Learn the controls Finish the opening missions; review the keybinds in settings
Next Get the detector Progress “There and Back Again” to receive the Echo and bolts
Settle Build a supply loop In Zalissya, note the trader, technician, bed, and storage box locations
Expand Clear the region Sweep side missions along the way, bank Coupons, then consider pushing outward
  • Where Coupons come from: mission rewards, loot sales, artifact sales — the first two carry the early game
  • Where Coupons go: ammo and meds are non-negotiable, weapon mods and armor upgrades second, and never skip repairs
  • Scavenged weapons usually arrive worn; learning to ask the technician “repair or sell?” is a required course

The Most Common Beginner Mistakes#

Mistake Consequence Fix
Entering anomalies without throwing bolts Instant heavy damage or death Probe every suspicious area with a bolt first
Ignoring bleed status Small wounds become death Carry plenty of bandages; stop bleeds immediately
Walking around with artifacts, ignoring rads Radiation quietly drains you Stash artifacts in containers; check your rad counter regularly
Fighting in open ground Getting focus-fired Always find cover before trading shots
Using unrepaired weapons Jamming at the worst moment Visit a technician before big fights
Rushing the main story Missing side missions and detector rewards Clear each region’s sides before moving on
Keeping only one save slot Bad choices become unrecoverable Rotate slots; make a dedicated save before decisions
