Dune: Awakening Guide#

Dune: Awakening is an open-world survival game developed and published by Funcom, adapted from Frank Herbert’s original novel Dune and Denis Villeneuve’s film series. The story plays out on an alternate timeline: Paul Atreides was never born, and the Atreides and Harkonnen great houses are locked in a drawn-out “war of assassins” on Arrakis, a planet ruled by sandworms. You play a deep-cover agent trained by the Bene Gesserit, dropped onto a waterless, scorching desert where you must survive, build, forge alliances, and gradually uncover the mystery of the missing Fremen.

The game launched on PC (Steam) on June 10, 2025, with Deluxe and Ultimate editions entering early access on June 5, and reached PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on September 22, 2026, joining Xbox Game Pass on day one. Update 1.5, released the same day, delivered a full single-player mode, scalable custom difficulty, and the final act of the Book One main story to every platform. The console release ships with all fifteen months of PC updates and is billed by Funcom as the most complete version of the game to date.

This section covers edition choice, the survival loop, resource gathering, base building, school builds, vehicle exploration, the Deep Desert endgame, DLC content, and achievements, along with a complete update history. Sleepers who have just woken up should start with the getting-started guide.

About the Game#

Dune: Awakening drops you into a timeline without Paul Atreides: Jessica follows the Sisterhood’s orders and gives birth to a daughter, the Atreides escape the downfall they suffer in the novel, and yet they remain trapped in an endless “war of assassins” against the Harkonnens on Arrakis. The Fremen have vanished after a purge by the Imperial Sardaukar, and you — a sleeper agent raised by the Bene Gesserit — are inserted onto the planet with a single assignment: find the Fremen and “awaken the sleeper.”

The survival rules are brutal. Water is life, spice is wealth and power, and the sandworm is the undisputed apex predator of the sand sea. You manage body fluids and temperature, hunt for every drop of water, recycle what your body loses through a stillsuit, extract water from blood, and stay constantly alert to the rhythmic vibrations that summon giant sandworms whenever you move.

Underneath all of it sits an MMO survival structure. You can stay on a pure PvE path and see everything the game offers, including PvE instances in the Deep Desert endgame and the Landsraad political system, or enter PvP instances to contest the highest-tier resources against other players. The September 2026 single-player update goes a step further: you can now experience the entire game and its complete main story at your own pace, fully disconnected from other players.

Core Loop#

The loop runs along a single spine: survive, gather, build, progress, endgame.

Stage Action Goal
Survive Manage body fluids and temperature, craft a stillsuit Gain a foothold in the desert
Gather Mine with the Cutteray, extract water from blood, harvest spice sand Stock resources for building and crafting

Progress Join an Imperial school, learn cross-school skills Unlock skill trees and specializations
