Subnautica 2 Guide#

Subnautica 2 is an open-world underwater survival adventure game from Unknown Worlds Entertainment, and the first mainline entry in the series to feature online co-op. It entered Early Access on May 14, 2026, priced at ¥108 on Steam in China. You play a Pioneer printed by the colony ship’s AI, surviving in the profoundly human-hostile ocean of the moon Proteus through scanning, crafting, and reworking your own genes.

What Kind of Story Is This#

The colony ship Cicada, carrying 40,000 colonists waiting to be printed, set out for the desert planet Zezura. En route, it passed through an alien phase gate without warning and crashed on the moon Proteus. The ship’s colonial support AI, NoA, began printing the first Pioneers — the players — to scout the way for the colonists who would follow.

That first batch built “Camp One,” and then died out entirely. NoA re-printed them from an earlier state and wiped their memories of the failure. As a result, the Pioneers keep finding their own corpses and inexplicably abandoned bases along the beach. That is the baseline of this game: you are not a hero — you are a tool that gets rebooted again and again.

The Core Loop#

Stage What you do Verified anchors
Explore Push from the shallows into the mid and deep layers Zone depths run from 0-224 m in the shallows to a marked 3100 m at the Void
Scan Scan wrecks for blueprints and creatures to fill the bestiary Cumulative creature scans unlock passive Biomod slots
Craft Unlock recipes from scanned fragments As of 1.2, the Repair Tool unlocks after two scans
Modify Collect Biomods and unlock genetic adaptations 6 Biomods in total after 1.1; adaptations come from interacting with organic cores such as the Angel Comb
Expand Build bases, build the Tadpole, and push farther out The Tadpole is the only submersible in Early Access

The most distinctive thread in this loop is genetic adaptation: the environment itself will kill you unless you change yourself — one of the most fundamental departures from the original game.

Depth is the real difficulty curve here: the shallows between 0 and 224 m are where you drill the scan-and-craft basics, while the marked 3,100 m boundary at the Void is the deepest point on the current map.

Systems at a Glance#

System How it works
Biomods Unlocked from biolabs scattered across the world; 6 in total since 1.1, and scanning creatures opens passive slots
Genetic adaptations Mutations gained by interacting with organic cores such as the “Angel Comb”
Bio-beds Your respawn point is determined by the bio-bed you are assigned; as of 1.2, a rescued player can be re-printed at a bio-bed instead
Tadpole The only submersible in Early Access; if it is destroyed, you can teleport back to the Tadpole pen (1.2)
Multiplayer Up to 4-player co-op, cross-platform; 1.2 adds cross-platform proximity voice, rescues, and direct item swapping
Navigation No built-in map in the current version — use waypoints and player-placed beacons to find your way

Early Access Status#

The current public branch has been through two named versions: 1.1 “Adaptive Measures” (July 8, 2026) reworked the Biomod line and added two biolabs, and 1.2 “Buddy System” (August 19, 2026) brought co-op play up to a usable state. The most recent update is Buddy System Hotfix 2 on October 6, 2026. The roadmap lists the next story chapter as upcoming content, with no date given; during Early Access the main story stops on a cliffhanger.

Getting-Started Essentials#

  1. Don’t rush into the deep right away: the shallows through the southern runway area (within 0-224 m) are enough to drill the scan-and-craft loop until it is second nature.
  2. Scan anything you have not scanned yet: scanning both unlocks blueprints and advances the passive Biomod slots.
  3. Treat return oxygen as a hard constraint: not “keep going while oxygen lasts,” but “only keep going once you have set aside enough to get back.”
  4. Build a Tadpole early: it is the only submersible in the current version and solves speed and cargo capacity in one move.
  5. Assign roles before teaming up: four people with separate jobs are far more effective than four people doing the same thing; 1.2’s proximity voice exists precisely to support that division of labor.
  6. Accept the way things are: there is no built-in map in the current version — use beacons instead of memorizing the seafloor.
