Rust Guide#
Game Overview#
Rust is a multiplayer survival and building game developed and self-published by Facepunch Studios, based in Birmingham, UK. Players start on a procedurally generated open world with nothing but a rock and a torch, then gather resources, build a base, unlock blueprints, and craft weapons to survive against other players and the environment itself. There is no single-player mode and no story campaign — everything happens through interaction with other real players. In July 2025, Facepunch announced that the game had passed 20 million copies sold on Steam.

Core Gameplay Loop#
The game is built around the monthly wipe. Within each wipe cycle, players run through the loop of gathering resources, building a base, collecting components, unlocking blueprints, crafting equipment, exploring monuments and map events, attacking or defending against other players, then starting over after the wipe. Official servers ship the monthly update and force a map wipe on the first Thursday of every month, while community servers set their own wipe schedule.
Key Mechanics at a Glance#
| Mechanic | Description |
|---|---|
| No classes, no levels | The game has no classes, levels, or skill points; progression comes entirely from blueprint unlocks and accumulated gear |
| Randomized appearance | Gender and skin tone are permanently assigned by a hash of your SteamID — players cannot choose or change them |
| Spawn kit | Every respawn starts with nothing but a rock and a torch |
| Components and blueprints | Collect components to research blueprints, or spend scrap in the tech tree to unlock recipes, used alongside three tiers of workbenches |
| Radiation zones | Some monuments are irradiated; anti-radiation pills help, with dehydration as a side effect |
| Temperature and weather | Rain, fog, snow, and day-night temperature swings all affect your character, so staying warm matters |
| Monthly wipe | The map is force-wiped on the first Thursday of each month; whether blueprints are kept depends on server rules |
Monument Overview#
The monuments listed below are real in-game locations:
| Location | Risk | Reward |
|---|---|---|
| Launch Site | ★★★★★ | Top-tier loot, military crates |
| Military Tunnels | ★★★★☆ | Large numbers of military crates, blue card |
| Airfield | ★★★☆☆ | Mid-tier loot, green card |
| Train Yard | ★★★☆☆ | Key location for the red card |
| Sewer Branch | ★★☆☆☆ | Beginner friendly, green card |
| Oxum’s Gas Station | ★☆☆☆☆ | Low risk, basic supplies |
Server Types and Wipe Cadence#
| Server type | Traits |
|---|---|
| Official servers | Run by Facepunch; the map is force-wiped with the monthly update on the first Thursday of each month |
| Community servers | Run by the community; wipe cycle and rules are set by the server owner (weekly wipes are common, and weekly-wipe servers keep blueprints) |
| Modded servers | Owners can tune gather rates, team size caps (default maximum team size is 8), and other settings |
On wipes and blueprints: servers that wipe weekly usually keep blueprints; on servers with a forced monthly wipe, whether blueprints are cleared at the same time depends on server rules. Official servers once wiped every blueprint at once with the November 2025 “Pivot Or Die” update.
Official Seasonal Events#
Seasonal events confirmed by Facepunch include the Easter egg hunt, Halloween, Christmas, and summer events. The exact content of each event follows that period’s official Devblog; this guide does not speculate.
Common Misconceptions#
- Assuming there are classes or a skill tree — the game has no classes, levels, or skill points; the XP system was removed back in November 2016
- Assuming you can customize your character — gender and skin tone are determined by your SteamID, permanently random and unchangeable
- Assuming there is a single-player mode or a story — this is a purely multiplayer online game with no story campaign
- Assuming achievements grant in-game rewards — there are 102 Steam achievements, none of which carry any in-game reward
- Assuming Rust 2 is in development — Facepunch has denied it; the rumor came from a fake Steam page
Common Beginner Mistakes#
- Joining PvP too early — contesting hotspots without gear is just handing over your loot
- Building the base too large — the bigger your early base, the higher the upkeep cost and the bigger the raiding target
- Turning all sulfur into ammo — sulfur is also the core ingredient for explosives, so balance ammo against raiding materials
- Ignoring cold and radiation — snowy mountains and radiation zones drain your stats without you noticing
- Fighting a team alone — the default team cap is 8; a solo player facing a full squad should disengage first
