Beginner’s Guide#

Subnautica 2 opens differently from most survival games: instead of a tutorial that explains all the rules, it drops you straight into the shallows and lets the colony AI’s scattered voice logs push you forward. The key to avoiding detours is not reversing the order of “exploring” and “building” — establish yourself first, then go deep.

I. Where You Are and What You’re Doing#

You play a freshly printed Pioneer. The mission brief is simple: prepare this moon for the colonists to come, and stockpile enough resources to print them. In practice it reduces to one line — stay alive, and keep getting stronger.

Stage Main goal Completion sign
Landing Read your surroundings; find stable food and water No longer scrounging for hand-to-mouth snacks
Footing First shallow base built; basic tools complete Fixed storage and charging spots
Expansion Build the Tadpole; push out your activity radius Round trips to farther resource points
Descent Acquire depth and heat adaptations; enter the ruins Able to operate around the Karakoram

II. The First Hour: Only Three Things#

Many new players swim deep immediately, run out of oxygen, lack gear, and can’t even find the way back. In the first hour, do only three things.

1. Do All the Scanning#

The scanner is the most important tool in the game, full stop. It serves three tracks at once:

  • Unlocking fabricator recipes (scan wreckage fragments)
  • Advancing the bestiary (scan creatures)
  • Opening passive slots for biological mods (cumulative scans)

The criterion is simple: when you see something unscanned, scan it before deciding whether to take it.

2. Gather the Basic Four#

Resource Common source Main use
Titanium Shallow metal salvage Basic building, tools
Copper Shallow veins and fragments Electronics
Quartz Shallow reefs Glass, viewports
Lead The lead zone Radiation shielding and some structural parts

All four are obtainable inside the shallows without taking any risk.

3. Build the First Base#

Your first base doesn’t need polish — it needs three things: power, storage, and a docking point.

Site criterion Why
Shallow depth Easy repeated trips; less oxygen pressure
Near wreckage Materials and fragments close at hand
Open terrain Future expansions won’t snag on rocks
On your route outward No detours heading deeper later

III. Don’t Ignore Biological Mods#

Many new players treat biological mods as late-game collectibles, but the 1.1 update moved them earlier. Their value: converting the act of scanning directly into stat growth.

What you do What you get
Find a bio lab module One mod unlocked
Accumulate creature scans Additional passive slots
Equip a mod Passive benefit; uses no active equipment slot

Criterion: whenever your route passes a lab module, go in and take it. Pure upside, no downside.

IV. Oxygen Is a Hard Constraint, Not a Soft Hint#

Situation Correct decision
Half your oxygen left Stop gathering; head back
More than 20 seconds’ round trip from the surface You need a mid-route breathing point
Warning tone sounds Drop the gather or fight; solve oxygen first
Just upgraded your tank Recalculate your radius; don’t reuse old habits

The one-liner: whether a dive is safe isn’t measured by “how deep I got” but by “whether I can come back with enough oxygen.”

V. When to Build the Tadpole#

The Tadpole is currently the only submersible. It solves three things at once: speed, oxygen reserve, and cargo.

If this happens It’s time
One round trip can’t carry a full load Not enough cargo
Most of your oxygen is spent just getting there Not enough mobility
Repeatedly blocked by depth You need vehicle pressure ratings

Criterion: when you start worrying that “the road is too far” rather than “my gear is too weak,” build it.

VI. The Two-Hour Checklist#

  1. Scanner fabricated, with a “scan-on-sight” habit established.
  2. A stockpile of each of the shallow-water four.
  3. First base has power and storage.
  4. At least one biological mod acquired.
  5. Oxygen tank upgraded once.
  6. Return route memorized, or a beacon placed.

Once every box is ticked, you can push beyond the coral gardens. For region order and depth bands, see Biomes.
