Top 5 in Depth#
No. 1 — Hades II#
Supergiant Games released Hades II v1.0 on September 25, 2025, simultaneously on Steam/Epic and Nintendo Switch/Switch 2. The full release includes six Nocturnal Arms, with the final boss being Chronos, god of time. Early access began in May 2024; the full release completed the ending and final chapter. For roguelike-action players, this is one of the most complete “full-release” indie sequels of 2025-2026.
No. 2 — Hollow Knight: Silksong#
Team Cherry released Hollow Knight: Silksong on September 4, 2025, on all platforms, day one on Game Pass. The official pitch: “battle 200+ ferocious enemies, conquer 40+ legendary bosses” — Hornet’s standalone adventure justifies the seven-year wait on sheer scale. Sales surpassed 7 million copies within six months of release (December 2025 data), while the original Hollow Knight had sold 15 million copies at the time of the announcement. Team Cherry has also announced a free expansion, “Sea of Sorrow,” expected in 2026.
No. 3 — Slay the Spire 2#
Slay the Spire 2 entered Steam early access on March 5, 2026, priced at $24.99, rebuilt on the Godot engine. Five playable characters at launch: the Ironclad, the Silent, and the Defect (all returning from the first game), plus two new characters — the Necrobinder and the Regent; the first game’s Watcher does not return. Content spans 575+ cards and 278 relics, with online co-op for up to 4 players — “climbing the spire as a team” is this sequel’s most direct expansion of the card-roguelike formula. The full 1.0 release is expected in 2027-2028.
No. 4 — Subnautica 2#
Subnautica 2 launched in early access on May 14, 2026, priced at $29.99, initially on Steam/Epic/Xbox (incl. Game Pass) only, supporting up to 4 players — the series’ first built-in multiplayer co-op. It ranked first on Steam’s most-wishlisted chart at launch. The full 1.0 release is expected in 2027-2028. Players should know: early access content is still being built, and there is no PS5 or Switch version at launch.
No. 5 — Balatro#
Balatro was 2024’s breakout indie phenomenon: grafting Texas Hold’em hand logic onto roguelike deck-building, with Joker multipliers compounding into “one more run” magic. It proved that card-roguelike depth doesn’t require complex mechanics, and made “roguelite + classic card game” one of the most-imitated formulas since 2024.

| Hollow Knight: Silksong “Sea of Sorrow” | Free expansion, 2026 | Officially announced free content expansion from Team Cherry |
| Cuphead proper sequel | Announced at Summer Game Fest June 5, 2026; early development, untitled, undated | Studio MDHR also announced an 8-bit-style pixel spin-off, Mighty Cuphead Adventure (physical cartridge) |

| Assetto Corsa EVO 1.0 | Targeting 2026 | Slipped from 2025 to 2026; the open-world Eifel region (~1,600 km², including the Nürburgring Nordschleife) is planned for the EA stage; no console version yet |
| Haunted Chocolatier | In development at ConcernedApe | The Stardew Valley creator’s next game, no release date announced; the Stardew Valley 1.7 update is greenlit (announced August 30, 2025) with no date or content details |
Two common misconceptions, clarified: Terraria 2 has never been formally greenlit (IGDB marks it as cancelled); Re-Logic’s current roadmap is continuous 1.4.x updates. Factorio’s Space Age is a major DLC released in October 2024 (not a standalone sequel); the official work in progress is the 2.1 update, and the Switch 2 edition — including the base game upgrade and DLC ($35) — launched around December 2025. Additionally, Risk of Rain 3 does not exist: Hopoo Games’ core team (including the founders) joined Valve in September 2024, and the Risk of Rain 2 IP sits in the Gearbox/Take-Two system (published by Arc Games).
On “Portal 3”#
Portal 3 has long topped community most-wanted lists, but Valve has never officially announced it. This page does not include it in the formal rankings — an unannounced project cannot be judged by the standards of a released game. If Valve ever announces it, we will update this section immediately.

Indie Game Observations#
Several clear trends define the 2026 indie market:
- Early access remains the standard path for indie heavyweights: Slay the Spire 2, Subnautica 2, and Assetto Corsa EVO all chose to face player scrutiny in EA form first
- “4-player online co-op” has become the shared direction of card roguelikes and survival crafters — indie games are eating scenarios that once belonged to big multiplayer titles
- “Nominal sequels” from veteran series are conspicuously absent: Risk of Rain 3, Terraria 2, and Vampire Survivors 2 either don’t exist or were never greenlit — extra vigilance is warranted when those names appear in marketing copy
As this list shows, the polish of top indie games now approaches traditional AAA production values, while prices remain in the tens-of-dollars range — the value advantage remains stark. The indie audience is also visibly bifurcating: one camp chases mechanic innovation, like the meta-narrative experiments of Balatro and Inscryption; the other expects pure refinement of traditional genres, like Silksong’s feel and map design. Whichever camp you’re in, 2026 is a year worth watching for indie games.
