Terraria Guide#

Terraria is a 2D action-adventure sandbox developed by Re-Logic and published by 505 Games. It packs exploration, gathering, building, gear progression, and boss fights into a single randomly generated 2D world: mine and build on the surface and underground by day, hold off monsters and events by night, and use steadily better gear to delve deeper and challenge stronger bosses. Fifteen years after launch it has sold more than 70 million copies across all platforms and holds an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam from over a million reviews — and the free 1.4.5 “Bigger and Boulder” update, released January 27, 2026, is the biggest reason to jump back in.

The Four Classes#

There is no class choice at character creation — your equipment and accessories decide your combat style. The current version recognizes four classes, with throwing no longer treated as a separate path:

Class Traits Signature Weapon Types
Melee High defense, close-range damage Swords, yoyos, flails
Ranged Safe-distance damage, ammo-dependent Bows, guns, launchers
Magic High burst damage, consumes mana Staves, spell tomes
Summoner Minions fight for you; many new whips added in 1.4.5 Summon staves, whips

Progression Overview#

  1. Pre-Hardmode: Build a house, gather ore, and defeat the first eight bosses — King Slime, the Eye of Cthulhu, the Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu, Queen Bee, Skeletron, and more.
  2. Hardmode begins: Bring down the Wall of Flesh to shift the world into Hardmode, unlocking new ores and enemies.
  3. The mechanical bosses: The Destroyer, the Twins, and Skeletron Prime are the first big targets of Hardmode.
  4. Plantera and Golem: Plantera unlocks the Jungle Temple; once Golem falls, the Cultist appears at the dungeon entrance.
  5. Lunar Events and the endgame: Defeating the Cultist triggers the Lunar Events — destroy the four Celestial Pillars, then face the Moon Lord.
