Beginner’s Guide#
Terraria gives you no quest log, and the easiest way for a new player to waste time is not knowing what to do first. This page organizes the opening tasks in the order you actually play them: create a world, survive the first night, assemble your first set of ore gear, then summon and defeat your first boss. All numbers and mechanics follow the official wiki and the game itself; anything this site has not verified is explicitly marked as such.
1. Creating a World#
World Size#
World size is measured in tiles (source: the official wiki’s “World size” page):
| Size | Tiles | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 4200×1200 tiles | Fast to traverse, concentrated resources |
| Medium | 6400×1800 tiles | Balanced resources and exploration |
| Large | 8400×2400 tiles | Richest resources, slowest traversal |
Recommendation: pick a Medium world as a new player — it has the best balance of resource supply against exploration workload. Size cannot be changed after creation.
Difficulty Modes#
- Journey mode: adjustable time and weather, item duplication — good for learning mechanics first.
- Classic mode: the standard experience; choose this for a first playthrough.
- Expert mode: bosses gain new attack patterns and drop exclusive Treasure Bags.
- Master mode: harder still; bosses drop exclusive pets and master-mode cosmetics.
Do not jump straight into Expert or Master. Push Classic through the early game first, then decide.
The Evil Biome Choice#
At world creation you choose between Corruption and Crimson: a Corruption world pairs the Eater of Worlds with Shadow-tier gear, while a Crimson world pairs the Brain of Cthulhu with Crimson-tier gear. The two sides are equal in content; the only way to experience the other set is to create another world.
2. Your Character and Day One#
Character appearance has no effect on stats, and a character can be taken into any world.
Do day one in this order:
- Chop trees: wood is the raw material for almost every basic craft, so gather a full stack first.
- Build a workbench: craft it from wood; it is the prerequisite for most basic recipes.
- Build housing: before sunset, finish at least one valid room (enclosed background walls, a light source, a flat surface plus comfort item, and an entrance) so the Guide and later NPCs can move in. Tile-level housing requirements are covered on the Building page.
- Make basic weapons and tools: use wood and ore to make a sword, pickaxe, and axe, plus a bow for nighttime self-defense at range.
- Go caving: dig down for ore, chests, and Life Crystals, placing torches as you go.
The First Night#
- Stay inside housing with a door and a light; Zombies and Demon Eyes spawn on the surface at night.
- Night is a safe time to mine underground, or to organize items and craft.
- If your health is low, retreat — do not force surface fights in the dark.
3. The Ore Upgrade Path#
Each world generates only one ore from each pair:
| Series one | Series two | Tier |
|---|---|---|
| Copper | Tin | Most basic |
| Iron | Lead | Basic |
| Silver | Tungsten | Mid-tier |
| Gold | Platinum | High-tier |
| Demonite | Crimtane | Evil biome exclusive |
Whenever you mine the next tier of ore, swap in a full new set of gear before challenging the boss of that stage. Loadout details are on the Combat page.
4. Life and Mana Capacity#
| Method | Notes |
|---|---|
| Life Crystal | Found underground and consumed directly; raises maximum life |
| Life Fruit | Obtained in the Underground Jungle after Hardmode; raises the life cap further |
| Mana Crystal | Crafted from 3 Fallen Stars, no Demon Altar required (altars are only used for Corruption/Crimson recipes); raises maximum mana |
Fallen Stars land on the surface at night and should be collected before dawn.
5. The Meteorite and Evil Boss Trigger Chain#
Breaking Shadow Orbs or Crimson Hearts drops rewards (see the Biomes page), but as of 1.4, a meteorite falls only after you break an orb AND defeat the corresponding evil boss (Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu). The intended order is therefore: break orbs for gear → defeat the evil boss → wait for the meteorite to land → mine it for meteor gear.
6. Your First Boss: Eye of Cthulhu#
Eye of Cthulhu is most players’ first boss. Its natural spawn conditions (source: the official wiki):
- Player life at 200 or above;
- Player defense at 10 or above;
- Once both are met, a 1/3 chance each night of spawning automatically.
You can also summon it manually at night with a Suspicious Looking Eye. Before the fight: a long-enough arena platform, campfires and buff potions, and a ranged weapon. The full strategy is on the Bosses page.
7. Early NPCs and Housing#
NPCs move in once you build them a valid empty house. The early regulars:
| NPC | Role |
|---|---|
| Guide | Present from the start; show him a material to look up crafting recipes |
| Merchant | Sells basic tools and supplies once housed |
| Nurse | Heals you for money — a lifesaver during boss fights |
| Dryad | Moves in after you defeat a boss; sells purification items |
Exact move-in requirements are best checked with the in-game Guide and the official wiki; this page does not list per-NPC numbers. NPC happiness and the Pylons system are covered on the NPC Housing page.
8. Exploration Notes#
- Carry plenty of torches — they light caves and suppress spawning at the same time.
- A grappling hook and rope drastically cut travel cost; get them early.
- Use a bed to set your spawn point so death does not mean a long walk back.
- Deposit coins into a Piggy Bank or Safe before setting out to reduce death losses.
- Return home at half health with no potions; never gamble on one more tile of ore.
9. Beginner FAQ#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What do I do first? | Chop trees → workbench → housing → weapons, so the Guide and Merchant move in |
| When should I fight the Eye of Cthulhu? | After reaching 200+ life and 10+ defense, with ranged weapons and an arena ready |
| How do I trigger a meteorite? | Since 1.4 you must break orbs AND defeat the evil boss before a meteorite falls |
| Where do I craft a Mana Crystal? | From 3 Fallen Stars; no Demon Altar needed |
| Do I lose items on death? | Classic mode takes a coin penalty on death; bank your money before trips |
| What makes housing valid? | Enclosed background walls + light source + flat surface and comfort item + entrance; tile standards on the Building page |
10. Event Reminders#
| Event | Key points |
|---|---|
| Blood Moon | Once conditions are met, a 1/9 chance each night; enemies get stronger — avoid open fights early on |
| Goblin Army | An invasion event; hunker down at base if your gear is not ready |
| Meteorite landing | After defeating the evil boss, watch the sky; the crater is your mining target |
Full event mechanics are on the Events page.
11. The Opening Route in Four Steps#
Break the opening game into four steps:
- Get established: chop wood, build a house, place torches, craft a workbench, and survive night one.
- Upgrade gear: Copper/Tin → Iron/Lead → Silver/Tungsten → Gold/Platinum, mining downward and looting underground chests along the way.
- Open the map: craft a grappling hook and platforms, traverse the surface, and locate the Jungle, Desert, Snow biome, and evil biome.
- Go to war: once conditions are met, summon the Eye of Cthulhu and fight your first boss.
Walk these four steps steadily and you will not be gear-gated when the Skeletron and Wall of Flesh stages arrive.
