Platform Overview#

Roblox is developed and operated by Roblox Corporation, a company founded by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel in 2004. The platform officially launched on Windows PC on September 1, 2006. It is not a single game but a game creation platform (UGC platform): players can both play experiences (games) built by community developers and use the official development tool Roblox Studio to create their own experiences and earn revenue.

  • Single-experience historical record: Adopt Me! reached 1,615,085 concurrent players on April 11, 2020, during its “dress up your pets” update event — a figure Roblox said surpassed the combined total of every game on Steam at the time.

Virtual Currency System#

Currency Status Details
Robux (R$) In use Added May 14, 2007; used to buy avatar items, in-experience game passes, and developer products
Tickets (Tix) Removed A free currency, removed in 2016

Robux uses dual-track pricing across the web and mobile app stores: since November 26, 2024, the same amount of money buys roughly 25% more Robux on the web and through gift cards than it does in the app stores. The full price table is covered in the Robux earning and spending guide in this section.

Creator Economy (2025 Data)#

  • Across 2025, creators earned a combined $1.503 billion through the Developer Exchange (DevEx) program, topping $1.5 billion for the first time (Quantumrun citing the official 10-K).
  • The standard DevEx cash-out rate is $0.0038 per Robux (after an 8.5% raise in September 2025); age-verified users aged 18 and older earn 42% more, about $0.0054 per Robux.
  • For in-experience game passes and developer products, the platform takes a 30% cut and creators receive 70% of the Robux; however, purchased Robux cannot be cashed out — only earned Robux can be converted to real money through DevEx.
  • The top 1,000 creators earned an average of about $1.3 million each in 2025 (Quantumrun).
