Roblox Beginner’s Guide#
Step 1: Create an Account#
Signing up for Roblox is completely free. The process works like this:
| Step | Action | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Open the sign-up page | Visit roblox.com or launch the Roblox app on any platform |
| 2 | Enter your date of birth | Determines the content maturity labels and privacy defaults you get |
| 3 | Create a username | Can be changed later; changing a username costs Robux |
| 4 | Set a password | Use a unique password that differs from your other accounts |
| 5 | Add an email | Used for account recovery and security notifications |
| 6 | Complete verification | Follow the on-screen prompts to finish the human verification |
| 7 | Log in and play | Once inside, you can start browsing experiences |
The date of birth you enter at sign-up affects the content maturity shown to you and the default permissions for chat and other social features. Minors should enter their real birth date and have a parent help set up parental controls.
Step 2: Pick a Platform and Install#
Roblox covers a wide range of platforms, and every version has a documented release date:
| Platform | Release date | How to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | September 1, 2006 | Download the client from the official site or use the Microsoft Store |
| iOS | December 11, 2012 | App Store |
| Android | July 16, 2014 | Google Play and other app stores |
| Xbox One | November 20, 2015 | Xbox Store |
| Meta Quest 2 / Pro | September 2023 | Quest Store |
| PS4 / PS5 | October 10, 2023 | PlayStation Store (one version for both PS4 and PS5) |
| Native PS5 version | April 14, 2026 | PlayStation Store |
Accounts carry across platforms: friends and Avatar customization stay the same whether you play on mobile, PC, console, or VR. That cross-platform continuity is one of Roblox’s core strengths.
Step 3: Lock Down Security Settings#
Once your new account is created, finish security setup before you start playing — this matters more than picking a game:
| Setting | Where | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Two-step verification | Account Settings → Security | Adds a second verification step at login and greatly reduces the risk of account theft |
| Email verification | Account Settings | The full recovery flow only works once an email is linked |
| Security PIN | Parental Controls | With a parent-set PIN, kids cannot change security or privacy settings themselves |
| Privacy settings | Privacy | Controls who can message you, join you, and see your activity |
| Restricted content | Parental Controls | Limits which experiences can be accessed based on content maturity labels |
One warning worth repeating: Roblox will never ask for your password or verification codes through links sent off the platform. Anyone claiming to be support and demanding your password or 2FA codes is a scammer.
Step 4: Learn the Basic Controls#
The default PC controls (keyboard and mouse) are as follows:
| Key | Function |
|---|---|
| W / A / S / D | Move |
| Space | Jump |
| Mouse | Rotate the camera |
Individual experiences may add their own keys, so once you are inside one, follow the control hints shown in the top-left corner or the settings menu. Mobile uses a virtual joystick and touch buttons, while consoles use a gamepad — see the controls guide for the full scheme on every platform.
Step 5: Choose Your First Experience#
The platform hosts a huge number of experiences, and beginners do not need to search blindly — start with hits that have stood the test of time. Based on October 2026 data from the third-party tracking sites rblxdb.com and bloxism.com, the experiences with the highest lifetime visits right now include:
| Experience | Lifetime visits | Genre |
|---|---|---|
| Brookhaven RP | ~88.3 billion | Roleplay |
| Steal a Brainrot | ~73.8 billion | Casual competitive |
| Blox Fruits | ~64.8 billion | Adventure |
| Adopt Me! | ~44.9 billion | Roleplay |
| Grow a Garden | ~36.0 billion | Simulation |
| Murder Mystery 2 | ~31.0 billion | Deduction |
New players are better off starting with slower-paced roleplay or simulation experiences, getting comfortable with movement, chat, and social features before trying anything more competitive. For a closer look at each one, see the popular experiences walkthrough.
Step 6: Understand Robux and Spending#
Roblox is free to play, and spending runs through the virtual currency Robux. Before you spend anything, keep three things in mind:
- Two pricing channels: For the same dollar amount, Robux bought on the web or through gift cards has been about 25% more than via app stores since November 26, 2024 — compare channels before topping up;
- Subscription: From April 30, 2026, the new subscription plan is Roblox Plus ($4.99/month); the old Roblox Premium plan no longer accepts new subscribers;
- Anti-scam rule: Every “free Robux generator” and “cracked client” is a scam. Robux can only be bought through official channels, and creators cash out through the developer exchange program (DevEx).
For the full price table and spending planning, see the Robux earning and spending guide.
Beginner FAQ#
| Question | Quick answer |
|---|---|
| Is playing paid? | The platform is free; some experiences contain paid content, and plenty can be enjoyed without spending anything |
| Do I need identity verification? | Sign-up only asks for a date of birth; features like voice chat have age gates — see the social system page |
| Won’t load or keeps disconnecting? | Error code 529 means server overload or connection issues; retry later — see the FAQ |
| How can parents manage a child’s account? | Use parental controls to set a PIN, content limits, and spending limits — details below |
Notes for Parents#
If your child uses Roblox, work through these steps in order:
- Set a security PIN on your child’s account so settings cannot be changed by the child;
- Enable parental controls and pick a content maturity label appropriate for their age;
- Review privacy settings to restrict messages and join requests from strangers;
- Understand spending limits, and if necessary keep no payment methods saved on the account;
- Agree on screen time with your child, and regularly check the account’s device login history.
Roblox’s official position is that the platform uses content maturity labels and tightens access for minors. For the latest details on every feature, defer to the official help center (en.help.roblox.com).
