Monster Hunter Wilds Armor Guide#
Armor decides your skill skeleton and slot ceiling — the foundation of any build. Armor in this game tiers from Rarity 1 through 8, with rarity also setting decoration slots and upgrade ceilings, and graduation gear runs two parallel routes: hunt Arch-tempered monsters one by one for the Gamma series, or gather Frenzied materials to forge Artian Armor. After the fourth title update, the Armor Transcending system added a long-term growth layer on top of graduation gear. This page maps each route’s unlock conditions, material sources and pitfalls per official update announcements; skill choices in Skill System, finished set-ups in Builds.
Armor System Overview#
| Rarity | Stage positioning | Main sources |
|---|---|---|
| Rarity 1 to 3 | Low Rank transition | Ore, bone and chapter-monster materials |
| Rarity 4 to 5 | High Rank mainstay; upgrade cap raised from April 2025 | High Rank monster materials |
| Rarity 6 to 7 | High Rank consolidation tier; slots and skill structure settle | High Rank materials plus Tempered materials |
| Rarity 8 | Graduation tier; Tempered apex materials and event quest output | Tempered apex hunts, event quests |
| Gamma (γ) series | Arch-tempered-exclusive companion gear, five sets total | Arch-tempered event quests |
Rarity is the master switch of the whole system: higher tiers mean more decoration slots and higher upgrade ceilings. Do not agonize over single pieces while leveling — swap tiers as the story demands; once in High Rank, pick pieces to fill skill gaps, as covered in the skill sources section of Skill System.
Arch-Tempered and the Gamma (γ) Series#
Arch-tempered (community nickname: “AT”) is the strongest monster form in the base game, released as event quests in version order — five in the base game, each arriving with one Gamma series armor set. Gamma pieces optimize skills and slots together, and each set’s skill and socket configuration matches the material identity of its source monster, making them the core components of graduation builds.
| Order | Gamma armor | Source Arch-tempered | Release date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rey Dau Gamma | Rey Dau (Windward Plains apex) | 2025-04-29 |
| 2 | Nu Udra Gamma | Nu Udra (Oilwell Basin apex) | 2025-06-30 |
| 3 | Nuudra Gamma | Nuudra | 2025-09-29 |
| 4 | Jin Dahaad Gamma | Jin Dahaad (Iceshard Cliffs apex) | 2025-12-16 |
| 5 | Arkveld Gamma | Arkveld (base game flagship) | 2026-02-18, closing the base game |
Collecting Gamma is a version-paced long line: Arch-tempered monsters open on event rotation, so hit each event’s target when it is live — far more efficient than backfilling everything at the end. Strength positioning and version rhythm for the five are in Endgame Systems, move breakdowns in Apex Monsters Guide. Owning all five sets is not a hard requirement — pick three or four by build gap, with mixing ideas in Builds.
Artian Armor#
Artian Armor is the other graduation route running parallel to Gamma; it shares the “Artian” name with Artian weapons but uses completely different materials. Its unlock is the easiest step to miss:
| Step | Details |
|---|---|
| Rank gate | Hunter Rank HR100 (this game’s rank cap) |
| How to accept | The side quest “Echoes of the Forgotten Forge” never appears on the Quest Board — go to Suja’s Overlapping Peaks and talk to researcher Fabius directly |
| Where Fabius is | The old researcher beside the camp’s scroll table |
| Set composition | 5 pieces including goggles |
| Signature skill | Slayer Lv5, Wound damage +45%, the backbone skill of late-game melee builds |
Tip: the supply box behind Fabius’s tent holds Armorsphere+ ×3 — ready material for upgrading your current armor. Grab it while accepting the quest.
Material Route and the Biggest Pitfall#
Artian Armor’s materials all revolve around the Frenzy system, and the two key materials are easily confused:
| Material | Rarity | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Frenzy Shard | Rarity 7 | Drops from any Frenzied monster |
| Frenzy Crystal | Rarity 8 | Only from Gore Magala, sole source |
| Ancient Weapon Shard | Rarity 8 | Third-tier Tempered: Tempered Arkveld, Tempered Gore Magala or tempered apexes |
| Hunter’s Symbol III | — | 7-star-and-above tempered apexes, from the quest reward box |
Pitfall one: Frenzy Shards come from any Frenzied monster, and Frenzied individuals appear only in the Iceshard Cliffs — Frenzied Yian Kut-Ku and Frenzied Nerscylla are the easiest to handle, so target those two first when short on shards.
Pitfall two: not every Frenzied monster drops Frenzy Crystals — Gore Magala is the only source. Get gear and items ready before farming it: use the Frenzy-curing herb to cleanse the Frenzied state, and bring a weapon with the Elderseal effect to suppress its Frenzy virus, or the virus state will keep interrupting your hunt rhythm.
The overall material loop and rarity rules are in Materials & Rarity.
The Armor Transcending System#
The Armor Transcending system arrived with the fourth title update (2025-12-16) as the long-term reinforcement system for graduation armor and the mainline of armor growth since. Its positioning differs from regular upgrades:
| System | Target | Positioning |
|---|---|---|
| Armor upgrades | All armor, consumes upgrade materials | Normal growth; the April 2025 update already raised upgrade caps for Rarity 5+ armor |
| Armor Transcending | Graduation armor | Long-term investment; continued growth space for graduated gear |
| Layered gear | Owned appearances | Appearance is independent and does not affect stats |
Investment order: first max out your current main set with Armorsphere-type materials, then shift gradually into Armor Transcending. Transcending is a post-graduation long-term project — finish one set before starting the next, and it complements the random rolls of appraisal charms; how armor skills interact with decorations and charms is in Decorations.
Rarity 8 Artian Parts and Hunter Symbol Tokens#
Rarity 8 Artian Armor and weapon materials and Hunter Symbol tokens all point at the same daily loop: Tempered hunts.
| Material | Main source | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Artian materials (blades, mechanisms, discs, tubes) | Tempered hunts | Rarity 8 corresponds to 7-star-and-above tempered apexes |
| Ancient Weapon Shard | Tempered Arkveld, Tempered Gore Magala or tempered apexes | Artian Armor material |
| Rarity 8 Artian parts | One of the 2025 event quest outputs | Watch event quest rotations |
| Hunter Symbol tokens | Tempered hunts | Upgrade and forging currency |
| Hunter’s Symbol III | 7-star-and-above tempered apexes | See the note below |
Key point on Hunter’s Symbol III: it is paid out from the quest reward box at settlement, not from carves — carving the monster and missing the symbol is not bad luck, it is the wrong payout route. When farming, prioritize investigations with gold reward slots; the better the reward slots, the higher the expected output per run. Investigation setup and refresh methods are in Materials & Rarity; in addition, Melding at Suja (Meld Relics) can also produce Artian materials as a supplement outside of hunting.
FAQ#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can’t find the Artian Armor quest | “Echoes of the Forgotten Forge” is not on the Quest Board — go to Suja’s Overlapping Peaks and talk to Fabius directly |
| Farmed Frenzy Crystals forever, none dropped | Confirm you are hunting Gore Magala — it is the sole source of Frenzy Crystals; other Frenzied monsters drop only shards |
| The virus keeps slowing my Gore Magala hunts | Bring the Frenzy-curing herb to cleanse the Frenzied state and pick a weapon with the Elderseal effect |
| Gamma series or Artian Armor? | No need to choose: collect Gamma set by set per version; Artian gates at HR100 with concentrated materials — melee should push Slayer Lv5 first |
| Carved but no Hunter’s Symbol III | It pays out via the quest reward box — switch to investigations with gold reward slots |
| Keep Low Rank gear? | Beyond layering value it can be dismantled; no material is wasted |
| When to invest in Armor Transcending | Start after graduation armor is finalized and upgraded, to avoid wasted investment from mid-way set changes |
The armor growth rhythm sums up in three steps: in High Rank, mix pieces to fill skill gaps; at graduation, choose between the Gamma series and Artian Armor by build direction; late in the version, keep climbing through Armor Transcending. Run the material loop smoothly and the armor line has no bottlenecks.
