Crash and Black Screen Fixes#
Monster Hunter Wilds launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam) on February 28, 2025. The PC build runs on RE Engine with Denuvo Anti-Tamper, so most of its launch and crash problems have a clear platform address: either Steam-side, GPU-driver-side, or a console error code. This page organizes fixes from Capcom’s official notices and community-verified reports by platform and error code, marks each issue’s current status, and excludes folk remedies that cannot be verified.
Data snapshot: 2026-10-15. The game’s current version is Ver.1.042.00.02 (released 2026-08-14, required for online play), and the official “Known Issues” page confirms no major unresolved problems at present. In other words, the crash you are hitting right now almost certainly belongs to one of the historical issues listed below or to a local environment problem — follow the matching section.
Current Version and Issue Status: Read This First#
As of 2026-10-15 the latest version is Ver.1.042.00.02, the official Known Issues page confirms no major unresolved problems, and the historical crash waves have been closed out by patches. Update the game to the latest version before diagnosing anything.
How to verify your version: launch the game and compare against the version number in the official update notice; if yours is below Ver.1.042.00.02, complete the online update on Steam or console first — this game’s crash-class issues have almost all been version-bound, and reproducing an already-fixed bug on an old build wastes your time. The “Known Issues” section of the official support pages (support FAQ No. 060) records what each patch introduced or fixed, and Capcom posts server and emergency maintenance updates on X (Twitter) at @MH_StatusUpdates; both are the first stop for answering “is this my problem?”.
The table below is the timeline of crash-class issues since launch, all drawn from official notices and verified reporting:
| Period | Prevalent issues | Status |
|---|---|---|
| February to April 2025 (launch window) | Shader-compilation black screens, AMD cards failing to start, frequent RTX 50 series crashes | Closed by driver updates and later patches |
| July to October 2025 | Crash changing equipment appearance, Insect Glaive disconnects, hover-over-Palico-gear crashes | All fixed by official patches |
| February 2026 | Crash wearing specific gear in cutscenes | Fixed in Ver.1.041.01.00 |
| August 2026 | Frame-rate drop on Steam after updating to Ver.1.042.00.00 | Fixed in Ver.1.042.00.02; Capcom apologized in a notice on 2026-08-10 |
Whatever the crash, the PC build writes a report (.zip) into the “CrashReport” folder in the game’s root directory — the standard attachment Capcom requires on tickets. If troubleshooting fails, take it straight to the official channels at the end of this page.
Fixing Steam Crashes and Launch Errors#
Fully exit and restart Steam first, then verify game file integrity; the four specific issues — grey Start button, error code 88500020, Anti-Tamper errors, and corrupted-save crashes — have dedicated subsections below.
Steam-side problems cluster “before launch”: the game not unlocking, unpacking unfinished, antivirus interference, anti-tamper verification failure — a button that will not respond or an error popup. The verified issues at a glance:
| Symptom | Cause | Fix steps | Current status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Start button grey after update | File unpacking incomplete | Fully exit and restart Steam to force unpacking to finish | Community-verified |
| Error code 88500020 | Program or antivirus conflict | Restart the relevant program; disable or update antivirus | Community fix |
| Anti-Tamper error | Suspected conflict with Denuvo Anti-Tamper | See the three-step fix below | Community fix |
| RE ENGINE – Aborted popup | Engine aborted | Update or reinstall Windows | Community fix |
| Crash after shaders load, cannot reach main menu | Corrupted cloud save | See the save-rebuild steps below | Community fix |
The Start Button Is Grey After Updating#
When the button stays unclickable after the game unlocks or a patch installs, Steam is still unpacking files in the background. The fix is one step: right-click the taskbar icon to fully exit Steam, then relaunch — the button lights up on its own once unpacking finishes. Do not spam the button or reinstall the game; reinstalling instead redownloads the full 75GB.
Error Code 88500020#
This is the typical Steam-side error for a blocked launch; the community’s effective handling is restarting the relevant program and disabling or updating antivirus software. The game’s full footprint is about 75GB with an anti-tamper component, and real-time antivirus scanning of the game directory is a common interception source — whitelist the game directory and launch again.
RE ENGINE – Aborted Error Popup#
A “RE ENGINE – Aborted” popup at launch or mid-play is an engine-abort error. Community handling: first update Windows to the latest version (the game officially requires Windows 10/11 64-bit), and consider reinstalling the OS only if that fails — this is the most expensive fix on this page, so finish the file verification and driver upgrades above before touching the system; if it still reproduces after reinstall, take the .zip report from CrashReport to the official channels at the end of this page.
Anti-Tamper Errors#
An anti-tamper-related error at launch (the PC build includes Denuvo Anti-Tamper, with a daily activation cap of 5 machines — the first launch after frequent hardware changes easily trips the verification step). The community-verified three steps: delete the “CrashReport” crash-log folder in the game directory, restart the PC, then run the game as administrator. If you launched from several hardware setups that day, wait for the next day’s activation quota to refresh and try again.
Crash After Shaders Load, Cannot Reach the Main Menu#
This is a corrupted-save crash: shader compilation completes normally, then the game drops straight to desktop at the load-save stage. The community fix, in order: first turn off Steam Cloud in Steam Properties → General, then delete this game’s save directory under “userdata” in the Steam install directory, and relaunch the game to rebuild the save. Two cautions: first, the save directory number 3065170 quoted in community posts dates from the test period — the retail game’s Steam App ID is 2246340, so confirm the folder’s contents before deleting; second, cloud saves are turned off so the corrupted save is not synced back from the cloud — do not rush to re-enable it until the game runs normally.
One more closed Steam-side record: the August 7, 2026 patch dropped Steam frame rates; Capcom apologized and investigated on August 10, then fixed it in Ver.1.042.00.02 (2026-08-14). If you “feel slower” on an old build, update first and tune later.
Handling AMD Crashes on Launch#
The community-verified fix is to delete “CrashReport.exe” and “CrashReportDll.dll” from the game root before launching; also update drivers to Radeon 25.9.1 or newer and avoid 25.10.2, which has officially confirmed problems.
AMD problems cluster in the launch window: RX cards would not open the game or crashed on entry, with “CrashReport.exe” popping up on the desktop after a crash. In order:
- Delete the two files “CrashReport.exe” and “CrashReportDll.dll” from the game root, then launch the game. Community records show this reliably works for Windows 11 users and does nothing for Windows 10 users — Win10 users should go straight to the driver-update route.
- Windows 11 users hitting “This graphics card is not supported” can also apply the deletion fix above.
- Drivers per official guidance (Ver.1.041.01.00 notice): AMD Radeon 25.9.1 or newer. Note that 25.10.2 and above have officially confirmed problems on the RX 5500 XT, RX 7800 XT, and other cards — avoid them.
One more GPU-tool issue: the official Benchmark errors when Frame Generation is enabled; the fix is to update AMD drivers to 24.12 or newer.
Handling NVIDIA Crashes#
Frequent RTX 50 series crashes peaked in the community in April 2025; NVIDIA’s 576.15 hotfix driver targeted them directly; if crashes continue after upgrading, roll back to 572.83 to verify.
The timeline is clear: around April 22, 2025 the Steam community reported a concentrated wave of RTX 50 crashes, and NVIDIA followed with the 576.15 hotfix driver explicitly aimed at this game’s crashes on RTX 50 cards. The RTX 50 user’s path: go to 576.15 or newer; if that fails, roll back to 572.83 for comparison. The official driver baseline for the current retail version is GeForce 581.57 or newer (published with the Ver.1.041.01.00 notice) — upgrade first if below it.
Solving PS5 and Xbox Errors#
CE-108255-1 goes through the official support page No. 066; C1152-TMT-TD72 and C1061-0-0 are network-side errors — wait for recovery or re-enter; most historical crashes are patched, see the table below.
| Error code | Platform | Symptom | Handling | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CE-108255-1 | PS5 | Game will not start or force-quits with an error | Capcom maintains a dedicated support page for this code (No. 066); follow the official steps | Under official support |
| C1152-TMT-TD72 | PS5 | Cannot connect to the network | A PSN network-side issue; wait for network recovery | Open beta era |
| C1061-0-0 | Xbox (can also appear on PS5/PC) | Communication timeout | Usually triggered when switching away from the game tab; re-enter or wait for recovery | Occasional |
| CSE-00200-0-0 | All platforms | Error on character-creation confirmation; cannot finish character creation | Officially acknowledged but no dedicated fix issued; later players no longer encounter it | Open beta era |
Two footnotes: C1061-0-0-style communication timeouts can hit all three platforms on unstable connections — connection-error territory; the connection error “EW_30d43” was an all-platform server-side error during Title Update 1 (TU1) that disappeared on its own when the update window ended. For such codes, check server status before touching local settings.
Console and All-Platform Crashes Fixed by Patches#
| Issue | Trigger scenario | Fixed in version or time |
|---|---|---|
| Crash wearing specific gear in cutscenes | All platforms, occasional | Ver.1.041.01.00 (2026-02-20) |
| Abnormal crash changing equipment appearance | All platforms | Fixed in the update around 2025-07-01 |
| Insect Glaive Focus Strike on Rey Dau causing disconnects | Online sessions | Fixed in the update around 2025-07-01 |
| Skill failures and other defects | Ver.1.021 era | Fixed by the 2025-08-14 patch |
| Hovering over Palico gear causing an instant crash | PC multiplayer lobby | Fixed by a ~7pm patch the same night after October 2025 reports |
The point of this table is elimination: if your crash matches a row, check your version number first — these scenarios should not reproduce after the listed patch, and a reproduction means an outdated version or a different cause.
Handling Black Screens#
For black screens during shader compilation and loading, first turn off Upscaling in Options → Graphics, then try disabling Frame Generation; if you still cannot get in, delete the shader cache file and verify game files.
A high-frequency PC problem from the launch window, drawn from Open Beta Test (OBT) and early-launch community summaries. Three fixes, cheapest first:
- Disable Upscaling: the path is Options → Graphics → Upscaling; set it to off, or switch to the “XeSS Native AA” preset.
- Disable Frame Generation: cases of Frame Generation causing black screens exist; toggle it off and compare.
- Delete the shader cache file “shaders.cache”, then use Steam’s verify-file-integrity feature to re-fetch it and let shaders recompile.
Ultrawide Resolutions Not Working#
Ultrawide resolution failures had no known fix at the time of the community summary — a display-side problem. Rather than cycling through parameters, first check whether your native resolution appears in the game’s in-game resolution list, then wait for an official fix. The above is general guidance; Monster Hunter Wilds-specific issues follow official notices.
General Troubleshooting: Six Steps in Order#
When none of the issues above match, work these six steps from low cost to high, each restated against this game’s launcher and spec line:
- Check the official spec line: the current minimum tier is a Core i5-10400-class CPU, 16GB RAM, GTX 1660 (6GB VRAM) or RX 5500 XT (8GB VRAM); integrated graphics and shared-memory devices are officially not guaranteed to run, and mobile GPUs even at spec perform far below same-spec desktop cards.
- Confirm the game is installed on an SSD: officially required; the base game is about 75GB; the free HD texture pack adds about 75GB, needs 16GB VRAM to enable, and brings total usage to about 150GB — a strained drive directly drags loading down.
- Update GPU drivers to the official baseline: GeForce 581.57 or newer, Radeon 25.9.1 or newer, avoiding the 25.10.2 flagged above.
- Run Verify integrity of game files for this game in Steam to repair files damaged by interrupted patches.
- Disable the Steam overlay (screenshot and popup layers) and launch the game alone, ruling out conflicts between this game’s RE Engine window initialization and the overlay.
- Check the official support page’s “Known Issues” section (No. 060) and @MH_StatusUpdates to confirm it is not a server or version-maintenance window.
Failed updates also call for a space audit: update packages are not small on any platform — Ver.1.041, for example, was about 13GB on PS5, about 16GB on Xbox, and about 15GB on Steam (about 21GB with the HD texture pack). Add the ~75GB base install, and a target drive short on space will break the update mid-write and leave corrupted files — clear free space first, then run step 4’s file verification.
The above is general guidance; Monster Hunter Wilds-specific issues follow official notices.
Official Channels When Nothing Works#
Taking your crash report to Capcom beats gambling on community threads; four channels are available:
- Submit a ticket: after a PC crash, the .zip report in the game directory’s “CrashReport” folder is the official standard attachment — attach it whenever you submit a support ticket.
- Official support pages: among this title’s support FAQs, No. 052 covers the spec and runnability guarantee, No. 060 tracks known issues and fix progress, and No. 066 handles the PS5 error code CE-108255-1.
- Server status: X (Twitter) account @MH_StatusUpdates posts the latest on emergency maintenance and connectivity issues; check it before debugging online errors.
- Environment check: the free “Prologue Demo” returned to the store on 2026-08-05 with Ver.1.042; machines with uncertain specs can validate the environment there before investing troubleshooting time.
