Avowed Builds#
Avowed gives you plenty of room to distribute points, but gear tiers are the real bottleneck. A good build is therefore not the one with the prettiest stat spread — it is the one that reliably solves fights at the gear level of whatever region you are in. The four setups below cover melee, ranged, spellsword hybrid, and pure crowd control. Follow them as written, or borrow just their gear and ability ideas.
Three Rules to Remember First#
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| One main damage skill carries the early game | Early points are scarce; spreading them thin leaves everything underpowered |
| Survival passives before damage passives | One knockdown wastes far more time than a few missed hits |
| Gear tiers follow the region | This is the hardest power gate in Avowed |
Build 1: Berserker#
Overwhelm enemies head-on with two-handed heavy weapons, breaking through the front line with Stagger and Bleed damage. This is the easiest build to pick up and the most consistent in the early game.
| Item | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Primary attributes | Might, Resolve, Dexterity |
| Secondary attribute | Constitution (top it up if you keep getting hit) |
| Ability focus | Fighter tree. Gap closers like Charge, war cry–style anti-interrupts, and area clears like Clear Out |
| Main weapons | Greatswords, mauls, and greataxes |
| Key passives | Stamina regeneration, armor rating, Stagger resistance |
| Gear | Source and notes |
|---|---|
| The Philosopher’s Riddle | Available in Dawnshore; a transition two-hander for the early game |
| Seven Tasks | Another Dawnshore transition weapon; pick one of the two |
| Emerald Fragment | Swap in during the Emerald Stair phase |
| Horse Breaker | The signature Emerald Stair greatsword; with its dedicated enchantment it clears crowds extremely well |
| Limb Splitter | The final replacement for the Galawain’s Tusks phase |
| Forgemail Plate | Drops in the Galawain’s Tusks mine; releases fire around you when hit by melee damage |
| Steel Garrote Plate | Obtainable in the first region; raises Constitution and reflects damage |
The Berserker’s weakness is ranged and elevated enemies. Keep a bow or an arquebus in the second weapon slot, purely to pick archers off high ledges.
Build 2: Mobile Sharpshooter#
Win through positioning and crits. Your health pool is small, but repositioning and mobility skills give you the forgiveness you need.
| Item | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Primary attributes | Perception, Dexterity, Might |
| Ability focus | Ranger tree. Stealth sniping, precision shots, and mobility |
| Main weapon | Bow or arquebus |
| Secondary weapon | One-handed weapon plus a dagger for close-range emergencies |
| Key passives | Crit chance, movement speed, reload and weapon-swap speed, stealth effectiveness |
| Point | Detail |
|---|---|
| Aim to find weak spots | Aiming down sights marks enemy weak points, and hitting them significantly boosts crits |
| Prioritize reload speed | The core feel of an arquebus build comes from reload speed |
| Use stealth openers | Stealth-attack passives combined with terrain let you clear sentries without taking damage |
| Mobility is your defense | This build skips blocking and saves stamina for dodges |
Build 3: Battle Mage#
Mix melee with elemental spells: soak damage with protective spells, then burst with an enchanted firearm. Alternating ice and fire is the core combo of this build.
| Item | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Primary attributes | Might, Intellect, Resolve |
| Ability focus | Wizard tree for protection and control, plus Fighter tree stamina management |
| Main weapon | One-handed weapon plus shield |
| Secondary weapon | Grimoire |
| Key spells | Arcane Veil–style protection and freeze-type control |
| Combo step | What to do |
|---|---|
| Open | Stack Frost buildup with freeze spells until the target is Frozen |
| Switch | Swap to the enchanted weapon and circle to the target’s side |
| Burst | Land a heavy hit on the Frozen target — shattering a frozen enemy pays off enormously |
| Reset | Once the enemy thaws, refresh the rhythm with shield spells |
| Gear | Notes |
|---|---|
| Day’s Afterglow | One-handed fire sword whose unique effect boosts fire damage; enchant it for healing on kill or a parry enchant that inflicts heavy Stagger |
| Hel’s Tongue | Restores Essence on strong-attack kills; adds fire against high-health targets and frost against low-health ones |
| Battle Mage’s Grimoire | Covers protection, spell interruption, Soul Lance, and a ranged spell — solid on both offense and defense |
| Vestric’s Grimoire | A defensive grimoire with all three protection spells |
| Forgemail Plate | Heavy armor that reflects damage when struck in melee |
| Bard’s Gauntlets | Boost strong attack damage; enchant them to further raise two-handed weapon damage |
| Sentinel Boots | Increase max Stamina; the enchant option grants a large health boost |
Build 4: Illusion Control#
A pure wizard route that wins through control rather than damage. At higher difficulties this is the safest way to play, because Frozen and Rooted enemies deal no damage at all.
| Item | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Primary attributes | Intellect, Perception, Resolve |
| Ability focus | Go wide in the Wizard tree, prioritizing crowd control and elemental buildup boosts |
| Main weapon | Wand plus grimoire |
| Key passives | Max Essence, elemental buildup boosts, cast speed |
| Control tool | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Freeze | The strongest single-target control, and out of combat it freezes water surfaces to open a path |
| Fear and Root | Breaks the enemy’s attacking rhythm and opens damage windows for your companions |
| Slow and wards | Keeps enemies at a distance and handles groups |
| Pull-in spells | Gathers scattered enemies together so area spells can wipe them out |
How the Four Builds Pace Through the Game#
| Build | Early | Mid | Late |
|---|---|---|---|
| Berserker | Strong | Strong | Excellent |
| Mobile Sharpshooter | Average | Strong | Strong |
| Battle Mage | Average | Strong | Excellent |
| Illusion Control | Weak | Average | Excellent |
Illusion Control has the roughest early game because Essence is scarce and spell ranks are low. Push through Emerald Stair, and it flips into the most low-maintenance playstyle in the game.
Common Gear Mistakes#
| Mistake | Reality |
|---|---|
| Stacking more than two damage types | The elemental buildup system rewards specializing in one element |
| Chasing damage numbers and ignoring Stagger | High-Stagger weapons are worth far more in boss fights than sheet damage |
| Ignoring accessories | Rings and amulets grant stat bonuses worth several attribute points |
| Never upgrading the secondary weapon | The off-hand weapon covers your weaknesses; at too low a gear tier it still cannot cut it |
| Running the same loadout forever | Swapping your main weapon each region is normal play, not a waste of materials |
