Avowed Equipment and Items#
Avowed’s equipment system has one very distinctive trait: it doesn’t encourage you to keep swapping in new gear — it encourages you to upgrade the piece in your hand. Understanding quality tiers and upgrade materials matters far more than farming for a slightly better weapon.
Quality Tiers#
Equipment is divided into five quality tiers, each split internally into three sub-tiers, so a single piece goes through multiple upgrades from start to finish.
| Tier | Color | Roughly matches region |
|---|---|---|
| Common | Green | Dawnshore |
| Fine | Blue | Emerald Stair |
| Exceptional | Purple | Late Emerald Stair through Shatterscarp |
| Superb | Red | Shatterscarp through Galawain’s Tusks |
| Legendary | Gold | Galawain’s Tusks and the endgame |
Tiers are not just a number change. Crossing into a higher tier visibly changes how much damage enemies deal to you — this is the most direct power gate in Avowed.
Every Weapon Type#
| Category | Specific types | Traits |
|---|---|---|
| One-handed melee | One-handed swords, one-handed maces, one-handed axes, daggers | Can pair with a shield or an off-hand weapon; parrying requires the off-hand empty |
| Two-handed melee | Greatswords, mauls, greataxes | High damage and high Stagger, heavy Stamina cost |
| Ranged | Bows, firearms (pistols and rifles) | Aiming down sights reveals weak points; firearms hit hard but need reloading |
| Spells | Wands, grimoires | Wands deal spell damage on basic attacks; grimoires provide castable spells |
| Defense | Shields | The sole requirement for blocking; boosted in the Fighter tree |
| Polearm | Quarterstaves | The weapon type added by the anniversary update |
Grimoires deserve a note of their own: they let you cast the spells inside them without learning the corresponding skill, so even non-mage builds often carry one.
Armor#
Armor comes in light, medium, and heavy tiers, and together with gauntlets and boots forms the three-piece armor set.
| Slot | Details |
|---|---|
| Chest armor | Provides the main damage reduction and determines the armor tier |
| Gauntlets | Mostly attack-oriented bonuses |
| Boots | Mostly Stamina or survival-oriented bonuses |
Heavy armor has the highest damage reduction but suppresses both your Stamina and Essence caps at the same time, so wearing it on high difficulties requires a trade-off.
Accessories#
| Type | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Amulets | Provide direct attribute or status-type bonuses |
| Rings | Bonuses to a single attribute or a specific effect |
| Other trinkets | Various special effects |
Accessories are easy to overlook, but a good ring or amulet grants attribute bonuses worth several attribute points.
Unique Equipment#
Unique gear carries exclusive effects ordinary gear doesn’t have, and can be enchanted on top. Enchantments are a choose-one-of-two, irreversible decision, so think it through before enchanting.
| Unique equipment | Type | Exclusive effect direction |
|---|---|---|
| Day’s Afterglow | One-handed sword | Boosts fire damage; enchant for healing on kill or a parry enchant with heavy Stagger |
| Hel’s Tongue | One-handed weapon | Restores Essence on power-attack kills; adds fire against high-health and frost against low-health targets |
| The Stars’ Nonexistence | One-handed mace | Deals massive damage to enemies whose Stagger bar is full; effect pulls enemies together |
| Horse Breaker | Greatsword | Built for clearing crowds; even stronger with its dedicated enchantment |
| Forgemail Plate | Heavy armor | Releases fire around you when hit by melee damage |
| Steel Garrote Plate | Heavy armor | Raises Constitution and reflects damage |
| Death Knight’s Armor | Heavy armor | High damage reduction, with a chance to restore health when struck |
| Bard’s Gauntlets | Gauntlets | Boost power-attack damage |
| Sentinel Boots | Boots | Raise max Stamina |
| Battle Mage’s Grimoire | Grimoire | A spell mix strong on both offense and defense |
| Vestric’s Grimoire | Grimoire | A defensive grimoire with all three protection spells |
Community interactive maps currently mark roughly 190 combat-focused unique pieces spread across twenty maps, and the actual count grows with version updates.
Consumables#
| Type | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Healing | Emergency recovery in combat |
| Resistance | Against specific elemental or status damage |
| Buffs | Short-term damage or protection boosts |
| Food | Produced by camp cooking, grants lasting bonuses |
Consumables are positioned as an emergency tool rather than a routine one, because using them takes time and backpack space is limited.
Currency and Trade#
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Universal currency | Copper Skeyt |
| Main uses | Upgrading equipment, enchanting, buying materials and intel |
| Merchant buyback | Selling ordinary gear pays poorly; salvaging into materials is usually the better deal |
Salvage and Returns#
| Item | Salvage output |
|---|---|
| Melee weapons | Metal chunks of the matching tier |
| Ranged weapons, wands, and grimoires | Wood of the matching tier |
| Armor | Leather of the matching tier |
| Unique equipment | Rare adra-type materials |
Salvaging is your main source of materials. Early on, when you find gear you won’t use, breaking it down beats selling it.
Common Equipment Questions#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Do I need to swap weapons often | No. Upgrade an early weapon and it can carry you deep into the game |
| Is unique gear always stronger than ordinary gear | Not necessarily, but uniques can be enchanted, so their growth ceiling is higher |
| Can enchantments be changed | No. Each item takes one enchantment and it cannot be undone |
| Does equipment break | No — there is no durability system |
| What if my backpack is full | Salvage low-tier gear first; keep unique equipment |
| Does quality tier affect drops | Yes. The deeper the region, the higher the base tier of drops |
