Crash Fixes and Black Screen Troubleshooting#
Crashes and black screens on PC mostly come down to three places: the PlayStation PC SDK runtime, the 6GB VRAM threshold, and launch-time resolution negotiation. Verify your game files and reinstall the runtime first, then work through this page by symptom.
Does it still crash today? The short answer#
God of War Ragnarök launched on PC on September 19, 2024, ported by Jetpack Interactive and published by PlayStation Publishing LLC, arriving on Steam and Epic the same day. At launch its Steam review score briefly sat at “Mixed,” and black screens and startup crashes were the main source of negative reviews; Santa Monica Studio and the porting team then shipped several patches in a row, and as of an October 2026 check of the Steam store page, the last-30-days positive review rate had reached 91%, with overall reviews back at the “Very Positive” level.
In other words: the launch-window wave of “crashes on startup” has largely been digested by official patches. What you are hitting now is most likely a local environment issue. Work through this page in order and the vast majority of cases can be solved on your own, without uninstalling and reinstalling on a gamble.
Black screen or crash right at launch: which steps come first?#
Early on the developer never gave a single root cause; media coverage summarized it as a multi-factor problem (Insider Gaming, 2024-09-20). The following basic steps are still the starting point today — run them in order and try launching after each one:
- Restart the game; if that fails, restart Steam; if that fails, restart the whole machine.
- Run the game exe as administrator: right-click the file → Properties → Compatibility → check “Run this program as an administrator”.
- Update Windows, the GPU driver, and the game itself to the latest versions.
- In Steam, right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
- Close background programs (screen recorders, GPU overlays, and CPU scheduling tools deserve special attention), then launch the game on its own.
| Step | Where | What it rules out |
|---|---|---|
| Restart | Game / Steam / whole machine | Lingering processes, unflushed VRAM |
| Run as admin | exe Properties → Compatibility | Insufficient permissions causing instant exit at launch |
| Update the trio | System / driver / game itself | Many launch-window crashes were tied to old drivers |
| Verify files | Steam → Properties → Installed Files | Corrupted runtime and game files from download |
| Close background apps | Task Manager, one by one | Overlays and scheduling tools conflict easily with this game |
These five steps cover every general direction the developer and media gave during the launch window. Only if the game still crashes after all five should you move on to matching your exact error below.
Why do I get a PlayStation PC SDK runtime error?#
This is the most recognizable startup error on PC. At launch, the following English message pops up, followed by a black screen or a drop straight back to the desktop:
Please run install_pspc_sdk_runtime.bat or first uninstall PlayStation(R) PC SDK Runtime- Cause: the PlayStation PC SDK runtime failed to install, or its files are damaged after installation. Santa Monica’s official support center has a dedicated article, “PlayStation SDK Runtime Missing Error”, confirming that this error is directly tied to the runtime’s installation and integrity.
- Independent outlet Gamepressure listed “SDK Runtime missing” as one of the prime suspects behind “game won’t start” during the PC launch window — if you can only check one direction first, check it.
Community-verified fix approach (Steam community threads, multiple posts since 2025-05-16):
- In the game’s SDK management directory, find
PsPcSdkAppMgr.exe, right-click and run it as administrator to manually reinstall the runtime (the exact path depends on the actual structure of your local install directory). - Go back to Steam and verify the integrity of game files so the launcher restores anything missing.
- If the error persists, reinstall your GPU driver, then verify the files once more.
Extra note: players were still running into this same error in Steam’s technical support section as recently as June 2025, which shows the runtime can be damaged by driver updates or system changes even more than a year after launch — seeing this error does not mean you did anything wrong; just follow the three steps above.
What about the “Something Went Wrong” popup?#
- Error shape: a “Something Went Wrong” popup at launch followed by an exit — a general startup-crash error.
- This must be said first: this error has no official numeric error code. If anyone online gives you a specific error code, it is fabricated — don’t follow it into editing the registry or other sensitive places.
- The fix directions are identical to the black-screen class. Media coverage (Partition Wizard, retrieved 2026-10-15) summarizes them into three: verify game files, update the GPU driver, and run as administrator.
- Practical advice: run all five steps from the “Black screen or crash right at launch” section in full. There is no shortcut for this kind of general error — at heart it is a matter of eliminating environment issues one by one.
Do CPU affinity tools cause crashes?#
- Symptom: players who used Process Lasso and similar tools to set CPU affinity for this game reported a markedly higher crash rate (Steam community user d0x360, 2024-09-21).
- Caveat: this is player feedback, not developer-confirmed. But the cost of testing it is nearly zero — disable (or quit) such tools for this game and launch once more.
- Rule of thumb: if you keep scheduling tools running permanently, this step should come before reinstalling drivers, because it is faster and more reversible than swapping drivers.
How do I pin the launch resolution and change compatibility settings?#
A failed resolution negotiation during startup is a classic cause of black screens, with two ways to handle it.
Method one: pin the resolution via Steam launch options (bypassing launch-time resolution negotiation).
- Right-click God of War Ragnarök in your Steam library → Properties → General → Launch Options;
- Enter
-w 1920 -h 1080; - Launch the game to confirm you can get in, then adjust these two numbers to your monitor’s actual resolution.
Method two: shortcut compatibility settings (Epic Dope, 2024-09-23). In the shortcut’s Properties → Compatibility, check:
- Disable fullscreen optimizations
- Override high DPI scaling behavior (performed by the application)
- Run this program as an administrator
AMD GPU owners have one extra step: in Radeon Settings, turn off Anti-Lag, Chill, Boost, and Vertical Refresh before launching. All four are latency and refresh enhancement features that appeared on launch-window crash checklists; turning them off does not affect the game content itself.
Will less than 6GB of VRAM crash the game outright?#
Yes — and this is an officially stated hard threshold, not speculation.
- Santa Monica published a dedicated article stating clearly that a GPU with 6GB of VRAM is required to run God of War Ragnarök, matching the GTX 1060 6GB in the minimum spec tier.
- Typical symptoms below the threshold: crashes at startup or during loading, texture anomalies followed by crashes, and it often recurs at the same progress point.
- How to self-check: on the desktop, open Task Manager → Performance → GPU and look at “Dedicated GPU memory”; then compare it with your GPU model’s rated VRAM.
- Rule of thumb: if your card has only 4GB of VRAM, don’t keep wrestling with software settings before upgrading hardware — this is not a settings problem, it is a threshold problem. Lowering resolution or turning off effects cannot make up a VRAM shortfall.

Which launch problems did official patches fix?#
| Patch | Timing | Changes related to launch stability |
|---|---|---|
| Patch 2 | Late September 2024 | Fixed an NVIDIA DLSS frame generation issue |
| Launch-issues hotfix | 2025-04-10 | Added error checking and logging for NVIDIA Streamline; PlayStation Overlay runtime updated to 4.00 |
| Patch 3 / Patch 5 | Fall 2024 | Dedicated articles exist in the official support center; official updates repeatedly improved stability |
The 2025-04-10 hotfix (SteamDB patch records) deserves a closer look, because it leaves you an official troubleshooting hook:
settings.inigained two new entries,NVIDIAStreamlineLogandNVIDIAStreamlineOTAUpdates;- With logging enabled, the game generates
C:\Users\<username>\Saved Games\God of War Ragnarök\sl.log; - Attaching this log file when you submit a ticket to the official team significantly speeds up diagnosis.
Background note: around Patch 2, a third-party mod removing the PSN requirement circulated in the community (made by iArtorias, unofficial). We do not recommend installing third-party modifications just to fix crashes — it changes the account verification flow, and if something goes wrong, it becomes hard to explain.
For the specific entries of Patch 3 and Patch 5, defer to the official support center articles; this page does not list them item by item. For the broader patch timeline, see Game Updates.
What about player community fixes? Do they work?#
The following two come from Steam community player feedback and are individual-case experience. They are not guaranteed to work for you — try them only after every official route has been exhausted:
- Audio sample rate change: in the system sound settings, switch the playback device’s sample rate from 48000 Hz to 44100 Hz and turn off spatial sound. The poster reported it drastically reduced crashes (user Santos65111, 2024-09-27).
- Disable DLSS frame generation: NVIDIA users reported noticeably fewer crashes after disabling DLSS, or switching to XeSS / FSR 3.1 without frame generation (community threads from September and December 2024).
This game’s upscaling support is comprehensive: DLSS 3.7 (with frame generation), FSR 3.1, XeSS 1.2, plus NVIDIA Reflex for input latency. So option 2 leaves plenty of room to maneuver — turning off frame generation usually costs only a few frames while quality presets remain selectable, which is why it deserves a high spot on your trial checklist.
Can PSN sign-in issues block startup?#
Yes. PSN is the account verification step, and getting stuck there also shows up as “can’t get into the game” — but it is a different problem category from crashes and is handled differently.
- Account requirement: playing requires signing into a PlayStation Network (PSN) account; the first launch must go online to complete sign-in or linking, after which you can play offline, and the game will not repeatedly demand sign-ins (the official “PSN Account User Flow”).
- Linking differences: on desktop, “linking your Steam account with a PSN account” is optional; on Steam Deck, linking is mandatory to play.
- Common anomalies: some players hit a “you must link PSN to continue” prompt or even get bounced back to the desktop. The community has observed that enforced sign-in varies from account to account — accounts that have already signed into other Sony PC games can often skip it; the official line is that the prompt stops repeating once sign-in is completed.
- Regional background: because PSN does not cover it, the Steam version’s sales were blocked in 172 countries/regions at launch (May 2024 pre-order period data). If your account’s region is outside the supported range, the error also manifests as being unable to enter the game — that is an account region problem, and reinstalling the game is pointless.
For more questions about platform versions and the linking flow, see the FAQ page in this section.
When fixes fail, match your symptom in this table#
The sections above detailed each error shape; here they are gathered into one troubleshooting table. Whichever row matches your symptom, do that row’s action first:
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Matching action |
|---|---|---|
| SDK Runtime prompt, then black screen | PlayStation PC SDK runtime missing or damaged | Run PsPcSdkAppMgr.exe as administrator to reinstall the runtime, then verify files |
| No error at all, black screen at launch | Failed launch-time resolution negotiation | Enter -w 1920 -h 1080 in launch options to pin the resolution |
| Crashes during loading or cutscenes, fixed progress point | Below the 6GB VRAM hard threshold | Check your GPU’s VRAM; upgrade hardware if short |
| Crashes with DLSS frame generation on | Unstable frame generation and driver combination | Turn off frame generation or switch to XeSS / FSR 3.1 (player feedback) |
| Random crashes, no fixed spot | Driver, overlay, or scheduling tool conflict | Update drivers, close background tools, verify files |
| “Something Went Wrong” popup | General startup failure | Eliminate via the basic five steps; no official error code to look up |
| Prompt to link PSN, then bounced to desktop | PSN sign-in or account region problem | Go online to complete sign-in and linking; check that your account region is supported |
Recommended overall order: run the basic five steps first → use the table above to pin down the specific cause → only then try community folk remedies. When neither layer works, enable the logging switches in settings.ini and file an official support ticket with the generated sl.log — stop blindly reinstalling.
