FAQ#
Relationship with the Previous Game#
Can you play God of War Ragnarök directly without playing the 2018 God of War?
Yes. The opening recaps the previous game’s ending through brief dialogue and scenery: Kratos and Atreus already know the truth about “Loki”, Midgard is shrouded in Fimbulwinter, and Freya has cursed the land over Baldur’s death. You can follow the main story fine without the previous game, but to appreciate Kratos’s shift from Greek avenger to Norse father, and the full arc of his relationship with Atreus, playing through the first game first is strongly recommended. The prophecy of his own fall that Kratos saw on the Jötunheim mural in the previous game is the psychological shadow running through this entire story — missing that context costs you a lot of emotional setup.
From which chapter onward do the second and third weapons come into play?
The Blades of Chaos can be reclaimed early in the story and serve as the crowd-control workhorse; the Draupnir Spear only arrives once the story reaches Svartalfheim and Tyr is freed. The spear is the late-game workhorse for breaking shields and detonating, and many collectible and puzzle mechanisms (gold rifts, specific floating objects) can only be opened with it.
How the Three Weapons Differ#
| Weapon | Element | Strengths | Best Scenes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leviathan Axe | Frost | Precise throws and recalls; freeze control | Ranged pressure, interrupting enemy wind-ups |
| Blades of Chaos | Fire | Wide sweeps, burn damage over time | Clearing fodder packs, burning vine obstacles |
| Draupnir Spear | Wind | Throw-and-detonate, high stun | Breaking shields, fighting elites, opening gold rifts |
All three weapons share the same basic inputs (light attack, heavy attack, aim-throw, recall); the differences concentrate in each one’s “throw–recall” logic. After throwing the axe, press Triangle to recall it — enemies in its path get knocked aside; the spear must be detonated with a second Triangle press, and the more spears stuck in an enemy, the higher the detonation damage; the Blades of Chaos are never off your hands, so there is no recall concept, and their rhythm is closer to continuous close-range strings.
Shields: Block vs Shield Parry#
What is the difference between “blocking” and “shield-parrying”?
Blocking is holding the guard button to steadily reduce frontal damage, but overly strong attacks will break your guard; a shield parry means pressing guard the instant an enemy attack is about to land — success perfectly deflects that hit and staggers the enemy, creating a clear damage window for Kratos.
Which attacks can only be dodged, never blocked?
When an enemy attack carries a red warning (red ring), it cannot be blocked and must be dodged — use the roll’s invincibility frames. Regular combos and single heavy attacks with wind-ups are the right targets for shield parries. Staying in place to tank hits after your guard is broken is the most common cause of death at high difficulty.
How to Use Spartan Rage#
Press both sticks simultaneously to trigger Spartan Rage and enter a berserk state. The rage meter fills from combat hits and is spent when full. While raging, Kratos’s attacks carry hyper armor, deal more damage, and lifesteal — a dual tool for surviving at low health and turning a fight around. Rage drains continuously once active, so trigger it only when your hits will land, and don’t waste it whiffing. Treating rage as an emergency resource rather than a routine damage tool makes high-difficulty survival noticeably steadier.
Is Atreus Playable?#
Atreus fights alongside you the whole way; you direct him directly with the aim and fire buttons, with no switching to a separate character. His value is support, not damage: arrows quickly build enemy stun — fill the white bar to trigger executions; some runic summons draw enemy aggro, giving Kratos a safe damage window. The story also includes a few segments where you play as Atreus; his combat centers on arrows and runic summons, at a completely different rhythm from Kratos’s melee combos.
Exploring and Traveling the Nine Realms#
Can all nine worlds be explored freely?
The main story visits several worlds in sequence; after the credits, nearly all Nine Realms are open for free back-and-forth collection runs. Not every area can be fully explored on the first pass — some zones require keys or mechanisms (such as sluice gates) unlocked by story progress, so returning after the credits to finish collections is a very common part of the flow.
How do you move between worlds?
You travel through the Realm Travel system along the branches of Yggdrasil, using the map and quest guidance to locate target realms. The game offers navigation aids that draw indicators toward main objectives on screen — don’t turn them off when lost.
Collectibles and Stat Upgrades#
| Collectible | Effect | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Idun Apples | Raise max health | Limited supply; collect on priority |
| Horns of Blood Mead | Raise max rage | Directly extends Spartan Rage duration |
| Odin’s Ravens | Unlock collection rewards and legendary gear | Most hidden; often tucked into camera blind spots |
| Artifacts | Unlock the catalog and special rewards | Some require specific puzzles |
| Lore Fragments | Unlock backstory and world lore | Flesh out the setting |
| Yggdrasil Dew | Temporary stat boost | Effect lasts until death |
Idun Apples and Horns of Blood Mead are the highest priority, directly determining late-game survivability and rage uptime. Odin’s Ravens are numerous and deviously placed; sweep for them one by one with the audio cue, and many ravens hide in spots reachable only through puzzles or specific weapon mechanisms.
Game Length and Difficulty#
How long is a main-story playthrough?
The main story runs roughly 25 to 30 hours; after the credits there are still many favors, collectibles, and trials, and a completionist run (including all favors and collectibles) stretches to 40 to 55 hours or more.
Does difficulty affect progress?
The game offers several difficulty presets to match your comfort. Higher difficulties sharply raise enemy damage and the demand for flawless play, increasing retries per fight and stretching total playtime accordingly; if you’re here mainly for the story, pick a lower preset — no need to force yourself.
Platform Versions and Online Play#
Which platforms is the game available on?
The game launched on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Game content is completely identical on both platforms; the differences are hardware feedback and image quality: PS5 supports higher frame rates, faster loading, and adaptive triggers with haptic feedback on the controller; on PS4, drawing a bow or throwing a weapon has no trigger resistance, so you judge by visuals and vibration alone.
Is an internet connection required? Do you need to be online the whole time?
The single-player flow is fully playable offline with no connection required. Online is used mainly for cloud saves, autosave, and some online features; it does not affect normal play of the main story or side content.
Is there official Chinese?
Simplified and Traditional Chinese interface and subtitles are supported, with stable localization quality, so you can comfortably play in Chinese.
What to Do After the Credits#
From chapter one onward you can return to explored realms to finish favors and collectibles. After the credits unlock New Game+, you can restart with your existing gear and skills, taking on tougher enemies and added content. Full 100% completion includes: clearing every favor, collecting every collectible, defeating the Berserker Gravestones across the Nine Realms, and taking on top-end challenges like Valkyrie Queen Gná.
Common Control Mistakes#
| Mistake | Reality |
|---|---|
| Thinking every attack can be blocked | Red-ringed attacks can only be dodged — roll with invincibility frames |
| Using Spartan Rage as routine damage | Save rage for low-health survival or boss burst phases |
| Ignoring Atreus commands | Keeping him firing builds stun — the key to triggering executions |
| Sticking to one weapon | Build the habit of switching weapons within one combo for seamless, higher damage |
| Stopping after the credits | Many favors and collectibles remain post-game, and New Game+ adds more |
