Weapon Compendium#
Final Fantasy XVI’s weapon system is far simpler than the series’ traditional entries: there is only one weapon class in the entire game (the greatsword), each character occupies a single weapon slot, and weapons have no stat differences, no elemental attacks, and no special effects. A weapon has exactly one core metric — attack power; weapons also provide will-gouging (the ability to break the enemy’s Will Gauge), which grows with the weapon’s attack tier. Build thinking is therefore very direct: swap in any weapon with higher attack, and the real choices live in accessories and armor (see the Gear System).
All weapon names and values on this page were cross-checked against multiple sources, replacing every fabricated figure from the old version.
Weapon Mechanics at a Glance#
- Single weapon slot: the weapon is one of six equipment slots — the others are the belt, the bracers, and three accessories. There are no helmets or body armor in this game.
- Attack is the only hard metric: weapons carry no elemental attributes or passive effects — at any given tier you only compare numbers.
- Will-gouging scales with attack: a weapon’s ability to break the enemy’s Will Gauge rises with its attack tier. For the stagger system see the Combat System.
- No elemental matchups: there is no “flame weapon against ice enemies” mechanic — the old version’s various elemental-effect tables were misinformation.
- Old weapons can be sold: replaced weapons can be sold to shops for Gil without affecting any collectibles.
Old Data Corrections#
Several weapons and materials listed on the old version of this page do not exist in this game — they were early misinformation and have been removed entirely in this rewrite:
| Old content | Verdict | Correct information |
|---|---|---|
| Broadsword, attack 12/12, starting weapon | Fabricated value | The Broadsword’s attack is 80 — an adult-era shop weapon |
| Royal Blade, Steel Longsword, Silent Sword, Warrior’s Blade | Fabricated weapons | No weapons by these names exist in this game |
| The Flame Blade to Shadow Blade elemental weapon chain | Fabricated weapons | Weapons in this game have no elements — the real weapons of each tier are in the table below |
| The Iron Ore, Fine Steel, Mithril, Star Steel material chain | Fabricated materials | These materials do not exist in this game — see the Items Database for the real material system |
| Gotterdammerung 280, Prime Blade 320, Apocalypse Blade 350, Ultimate Blade 375 | Fabricated weapons | The base game’s strongest is Götterdämmerung (375); NG+ brings the Ultima Weapon (700) |
| Ancient Blade, Deep-Sea Blade, Leviathan’s Sting and other “DLC weapons” | Fabricated weapons | The real DLC weapons are Fallen Enforcer, Tidestrike, Omega, and more |
Full Base-Game Weapon Table#
The table below lists every weapon in the base game (non-DLC), sorted by attack ascending. Acquisition lists only verified entries; weapons marked “unlocks as the main story progresses” are obtained through the Hideaway shop or the forge as the story naturally provides them.

|---|---|---|
| Rosarian Oath | 55 | Held automatically during the youth chapters |
| Imperial Infantry Blade | 75 | Starting equipment of the adult era |
| Broadsword | 80 | Unlocks as the main story progresses |
| Longsword | 95 | Unlocks as the main story progresses |
| Bastard Sword | 110 | Unlocks as the main story progresses |
| Braveheart | 130 | Pre-order bonus |
| Stormcry | 135 | Forged from the Wind Shard dropped after the Garuda fight |
| Gaia Blade | 140 | Unlocks as the main story progresses |
| Invictus | 165 | Obtained in the main story |

| Grindstone | 225 | Forged from the Earth Shard dropped after the Hugo fight |
| Enhancer | 230 | Unlocks as the main story progresses |
| Diamond Sword | 245 | Unlocks as the main story progresses |
| Ancient Sword | 252 | Chest in Dhalmekia |
| Excalibur | 268 | Forged from the recipe in the side quest Blacksmith’s Blues II |
| Brightburn | 270 | Forged from the Light Shard dropped after the Bahamut fight |
| Rune Blade | 275 | Unlocks as the main story progresses |
| Icebrand | 300 | Unlocks as the main story progresses |
| Masamune | 310 | Chest in Waloed |

| Ragnarok | 325 | Forged from the recipe in the side quest Blacksmith’s Blues IV |
| Götterdämmerung | 375 | Blacksmith’s Blues IV recipe, forged at the endgame (materials below) |
The table reveals three acquisition tracks for weapons in this game: shops and forging cover most story weapons; shards dropped by main-story bosses correspond to four stage-defining strong weapons; and side quest recipes (the Blacksmith’s Blues series) plus map chests round out the remaining high-tier weapons. All three tracks converge at the base game’s strongest sword, Götterdämmerung (375).
Weapon Reinforcement System#
Weapons reinforce at the Hideaway forge just like armor, but the tiers run deeper:
- The base game offers +0 through +3: every weapon can be reinforced up to three times, with attack climbing each tier.
- NG+ extends to +6: in New Game+ the reinforcement cap expands from 3 to 6, letting base-game weapons climb further.
- The final tier renames the weapon: reinforcing to the final tier changes the weapon’s name as a mark of full reinforcement.
- Reinforcement only raises numbers: like the weapons themselves, reinforcement adds no attributes or special effects.
Reinforcement costs Gil and matching materials; the higher the tier, the rarer the materials. The core rare materials come from the Hunt Board (see the crafting route below and Bosses and the Hunt Board).
Crafting and Recipes#
Weapon crafting at the Hideaway forge revolves around three sources:
- The Black Hammer flow: once the main story grants you the Black Hammer, the Hideaway’s forge opens, and all weapon forging and reinforcement happens there from then on.
- The “Blacksmith’s Blues” side quests: the main source of advanced recipes. “Blacksmith’s Blues II” provides the recipe for Excalibur (268); “Blacksmith’s Blues IV” provides both the Ragnarok (325) recipe and the Götterdämmerung (375) formula — the closing quest of the base game’s weapon crafting line.
- Shard materials from Eikons and key bosses: shard-type materials dropped by main-story boss fights, used to craft the four stage-defining strong weapons.
The shard-to-weapon mapping:
| Shard material | Dropped by | Crafted weapon |
|---|---|---|
| Wind Shard | Garuda boss fight | Stormcry (135) |
| Earth Shard | Hugo boss fight | Grindstone (225) |
| Light Shard | Bahamut boss fight | Brightburn (270) |
| Dark Shard | Barnabas boss fight | Everdark (315) |
For a full overview of the Eikon system, see Eikons.
Base-Game Best: Crafting Götterdämmerung#
Götterdämmerung (attack 375) is the base game’s highest-attack weapon; its recipe unlocks after completing “Blacksmith’s Blues IV”. Recommended order:
- Complete the “Blacksmith’s Blues IV” side quest and forge Ragnarok (325) — it is both the base game’s second-strongest weapon and a crafting material for Götterdämmerung, and will be consumed.
- Hunt the S-rank Notorious Marks Atlas (level 45), Gorgimera (45), Behemoth King (47), and Svarog (50) to gather 3 Orichalcum.
- Hunt the A-rank Notorious Marks Thanatos (42) and Prince of Death (40); each drops 1 Darksteel — exactly the 2 the recipe requires.
- Hunt Gobermouch (38) for 1 Primitive Battlehorn.
| Material | Amount | Acquisition |
|---|---|---|
| Ragnarok | 1 | Forged after completing “Blacksmith’s Blues IV” |
| Orichalcum | 3 | S-rank Notorious Marks: Atlas / Gorgimera / Behemoth King / Svarog |
| Darksteel | 2 | 1 each from Thanatos (42) and Prince of Death (40) |
| Primitive Battlehorn | 1 | Dropped by Gobermouch (38) |
Worth noting: Orichalcum is also the core material for the base game’s strongest belt (Ouroboros) and strongest bracers (the Ouroboros Sire) — see the Gear System for the full material lists. So farming endgame S-rank hunts pays off twice, covering weapons and armor in one stroke; repeat hunts are never wasted.
DLC Weapons#
Each of the two DLC packs brings new weapons with attack above the base game’s ceiling:
| Weapon | Attack | Acquisition |
|---|---|---|
| Tonberry Knife | 350 | New DLC weapon |
| Fallen Enforcer | 390 | Added in DLC1 Echoes of the Fallen |
| Tidestrike | 400 | Added in DLC2 The Rising Tide |
| Omega Weapon | 410 | Crafted in DLC1 Echoes of the Fallen |
| Original Sin | 750 | Crafted after clearing every wave of DLC2’s Kairos Gate in Final Fantasy Mode |
Two supplementary notes:
- Omega (410) requires collecting materials in Echoes of the Fallen to craft — the easiest 400-tier weapon to obtain.
- Original Sin (750) is the highest-attack weapon in the entire game: Kairos Gate is a wave-challenge mode added in The Rising Tide, and crafting unlocks only after clearing every wave in Final Fantasy Mode — the hardest endpoint across both DLC packs.
For the DLC’s overall content (new story, bosses, and systems), see DLC.
New Game+ and the Ultima Weapon#
Clear the game on any difficulty to unlock New Game+ (NG+), where you can choose Final Fantasy Mode at the start (once chosen, the difficulty cannot be changed). The weapon-related changes:
- Enemies are stronger, with different compositions and placements than the first run — the value of high-attack weapons grows further.
- Clive’s level cap rises from 50 to 100.
- The reinforcement cap expands from 3 to 6, and fully reinforced weapons change name.
- Crafting of the Ultima Weapon (attack 700) unlocks — the highest-attack weapon in the base game (DLC excluded).
- Ultimaniac mode (a beefed-up Arcade Mode) and the Final Chronolith Trials unlock.
The Ultima Weapon is crafted at the Hideaway forge in NG+. Since NG+ carries over gear, Gil, and all crafting materials (see New Game+ and Final Fantasy Mode for the full carryover list), a second playthrough needs no fresh material gathering — head straight for full reinforcement and the Ultima Weapon. For endgame planning overall, see Endgame Content.
Upgrading Advice#
- Attack is the weapon’s only trade-off dimension: at any stage, swap in the higher number immediately — there is no reason to keep an old weapon.
- The Hunt Board is the shared source of weapon and armor materials from the mid-game onward; prioritize clearing high-level Notorious Marks (the five S-ranks span levels 45 to 50).
- Don’t neglect reinforcement: a +3 mid-tier weapon may not lose on attack to a +0 weapon of the next tier — forge upgrades and replacements can run in parallel.
- Accessories define your playstyle, weapons define your damage ceiling — for the full build picture see the Gear System.
