Bosses and Bodyguards – Assassin’s Creed Origins#
This page pulls together the key tactics for the major boss fights and tough enemy encounters in Assassin’s Creed Origins, covering four opponent types: main-story bosses, Phylakes, Trials of the Gods, and massive beasts.
A note on levels: this page does not list specific boss level values. In-game enemy levels are tied to the region they occupy and your main-quest progress, so go by the numbers shown on the quest panel and next to an enemy’s health bar; recommended levels likewise follow the hints in each quest briefing.
Main-Story Boss Fights#
Several mandatory boss fights occur across the main story, most of them against members of the Order of the Ancients. Listed below in story order are each fight’s attack patterns and how to answer them; exact move behavior always comes down to what you see in the fight itself.
The Scarab (Eudoros)#
Location: The Royal Residence in Alexandria
- The fight revolves around a sword-and-shield kit with an even rhythm of attack and defense, so trading blows head-on is very risky.
- His charge attack has a clear wind-up; a sideways dodge is enough to open up an angle.
- Spartan Kick works extremely well against shield carriers and can break their defensive stance.
- Below half health he will try to flee around the room, so be ready to cut off the doors early.
The Hyena (Khaliset)#
Location: The pyramid excavation site in Giza
- The fight takes place inside a cramped excavation site, so watch for the traps she leaves along the way.
- She drives a pack of hyenas into the fight; clear the hyenas first, then focus your damage on her.
- When she takes the high ground, pinning her down with arrows is safer than climbing up after her.
- Her area attacks have cooldown gaps between them; use those windows to close in and deal damage.
The Lizard (Hetepi)#
Location: Beneath the Temple of Apis in Memphis
- His fire attacks cover a wide area; dodge with rolls and never get greedy with extra hits.
- The underground space is tight, so clear out his minion adds before focusing on him.
- Kiting with the bow works well — fire a volley from range, then reposition.
- Swapping on fire-resistance gear beforehand noticeably lowers the chance of a wipe.
The Crocodile (Berenike)#
Location: The governor’s residence in Krokodilopolis, Faiyum
- She fights with a spear and shield, so pay close attention to the hit range of her long sweeping strikes.
- Dodging first and counterattacking after is your safest damage window.
- She calls in Roman soldier reinforcements; clear the adds quickly so you don’t get surrounded.
- Make good use of the fire braziers and oil jars in the courtyard to deal area damage.
The Final Fight: Flavius#
Location: The catacombs in Cyrenaica
- The Apple of Eden spawns illusionary duplicates; the real body glows in a way the illusions do not.
- Illusions vanish on their own once struck; when you can’t tell them apart, prioritize the glowing real body.
- His energy waves cannot be blocked — dodging is the only answer.
- Spartan Kick can interrupt his casting animation and is a key tool for keeping him suppressed.
- Hold mid range and wait for him to finish his swings; adrenaline abilities are your main burst damage.
Phylakes#
Phylakes are elite enforcers that patrol the whole of Egypt — the “bodyguards” in this site’s guide index. They are not tied to any fixed post; instead they appear progressively as the main story advances, so there is no one-size-fits-all challenge level.
Spawn rules:
- They appear as the main story progresses, with levels matched to the region you are in.
- They patrol roads and outposts, and once they spot you they will actively hunt you down.
- Defeating them yields high-quality gear drops, so they are worth prioritizing.
Counter strategies:
- Level check: read the level next to their health bar before engaging; if the gap is too large, go explore and run side quests first.
- Use the environment: terrain such as fire braziers, oil jars, and cliffs can all swing the fight.
- Pick them apart: clear any accompanying soldiers first, then focus entirely on the Phylake.
- Bow kiting: Phylakes don’t actively dodge arrows, so whittling them down from range is very safe.
- Mounted archery: get on a horse with a light bow and shoot on the move to avoid melee scrapping.
- Sleep darts: some Phylakes can be knocked out with a sleep dart and then assassinated; the success rate depends on the level gap.
Trials of the Gods#
Trials of the Gods are limited-time event boss fights; the official team ran three of them in sequence — Anubis, Sobek, and Sekhmet. Event availability follows the in-game announcements, and the trial entrance appears on the world map while the event is live.
Reward rules: the first clear drops pieces of the corresponding god’s gear set, while repeat kills drop legendary materials; the exact pieces and material amounts follow the details of the current event.
Anubis#
- Sweeping attack: a huge staff sweep with a large range — handle it from mid distance.
- Ground slam: he smashes the ground for area damage; watch the warning circles on the floor.
- Soul harvest: he summons spirit orbs that track you; you can destroy them one by one.
- Teleport ambush: he vanishes and reappears behind you; roll away in time to create space.
- Attacks to the legs and head deal the most damage; unload everything while he is down.
Sobek#
- Bite attack: a quick forward lunge bite — answer it with a sideways dodge.
- Tail whip: a turning sweep with a huge range, so keep plenty of stamina in reserve for dodging.
- Water bolt: he spits a ranged water projectile; blocking works, but dodging is the better call.
- Submerged ambush: he dives underwater and bursts out suddenly; ripples on the surface show where he will emerge.
- The arena is mostly water, so don’t let yourself get cornered; fire arrows deal extra damage.
Sekhmet#
- Fire breath: a cone of flame with a wind-up — sidestep to avoid it.
- Claw swipe: a rapid three-hit combo; chain rolls to get clear.
- Sun ray: beams fired from her eyes that take several consecutive rolls to evade.
- Summon fire: patches of persistent flame appear on the ground, so never stand still while attacking.
- Fire-resistance gear is essential here; attacking her head and shoulders gives the best returns.
Trials of the Gods Reward Overview#
| God | First clear | Repeat runs |
|---|---|---|
| Anubis | Corresponding gear set pieces | Legendary materials |
| Sobek | Corresponding gear set pieces | Legendary materials |
| Sekhmet | Corresponding gear set pieces | Legendary materials |
War Elephants and Wildlife#
The open world is also full of wildlife encounters, and their levels are likewise matched to the region you are in. Beasts in water are far more dangerous than land animals — if one attacks, get out of the water before fighting back.
| Animal | Common areas | How to handle it |
|---|---|---|
| Hippopotamus | Nile and Faiyum waters | Fighting in the water is extremely dangerous — get to land first, open up distance, then use your bow |
| Crocodile | Nile and Delta marshes | Avoid close quarters in shallow water; once ashore, circle and shoot its flanks |
| Lion | Desert and savanna edges | Keep your distance and watch for the lunge wind-up |
| Hyena | Western Desert and elsewhere, usually in packs | Clear the group first, then deal with the stragglers one at a time |
| War elephant | Cyrenaica | Circle to dodge its charge and keep dealing damage from the side and rear |
General Boss-Fight Preparation#
- Level check: compare the quest briefing with the level next to the enemy’s health bar; if the gap is obvious, shore up with side quests first.
- Gear optimization: bring your main weapon, bow, and sidearm up to the highest quality currently available to you.
- Medical supplies: stock up on healing items before the fight, and restock tools if needed.
- Arrow resupply: make sure your quiver is full — doubly so for ranged playstyles.
- Skill check: make sure core combat skills such as Spartan Kick are unlocked.
- Scout the arena: before entering the boss area, note where the fire braziers, oil jars, and elevation changes sit.
- Manual save: save manually before a big fight so you can reload and retry right away if things go wrong.
