One Thing First#
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is not an RPG. The developers were explicit about it during previews: no levels, no experience points, no skill tree, and no stat-crushing progression path. Edward’s strength comes from three very plain things:
| Source | Impact |
|---|---|
| Gear and trinkets | Ammo capacity, pistol count, passive bonuses |
| Jackdaw upgrades | Naval power — unrelated to the character himself |
| Player skill | Block timing and execution chains are the biggest variable |
So if you are hunting for “where do I spend skill points,” the answer is: this game has no such system. What follows is how abilities are actually obtained.
The Four Sources of Ability#
| Source | Output | Can it be missed? |
|---|---|---|
| Story Sequences | Rope dart, Observation Mode, and other core abilities | No — the main story runs through them |
| Officer quest lines | The Jackdaw’s most powerful abilities | Yes — you must actively take the missions |
| Gear and trinkets | Passive bonuses and capacity | Yes — requires collecting and crafting |
| Fortress capture | Secondary fire modes for weapons | Yes — requires actively taking forts |
Story Unlocks#
| Ability | When it unlocks | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Observation Mode | Early tutorial | Marks enemies and interactable objects |
| Crouch anywhere | Available throughout | Crouch on any surface, changing how stealth detection works |
| Rope dart | Sequence 3 | Pull enemies closer, or hang them from beams and masts |
| Perfect block and execution chain | Early tutorial | The heart of combat — up to four chained executions |
| Heavy attack | Early tutorial | Breaks guards; mandatory against enemies with defense bars |
| Kenway’s Fleet | Around Sequence 4 | Send captured ships along trade routes |
All of these simply arrive as you push forward; the only caution is not to brute-force stealth missions before the rope dart opens.
Officer Abilities#
The remake adds three recruitable Officers, and finishing each of their quest lines unlocks one Jackdaw ability — the most valuable growth track in the game.
| Officer | Quest line | Ability |
|---|---|---|
| Lucy Baldwin | Joins as a shipwright; the line revolves around the shipyard | Perfect Brace — cancels most types of incoming damage |
| The Priest (Abel Garvan) | Settles in a small village, with a complicated past | Ram Dash — for seizing position or forcing an interrupt |
| Tobias “Deadman” Smith | Bound to the endgame chapter | Twin side salvos — the core of the ship’s damage ceiling |
Each quest line grants one Jackdaw bonus partway through, and the full ability only lands once the line is finished. Don’t stop as soon as the bonus arrives.
Gear and Trinkets#
| Type | Source | Typical effect |
|---|---|---|
| Ammo pouch | Crafted from hunting materials | Pistol ammunition and blowpipe dart supply |
| Dart pouch | Crafted from hunting materials | Berserk and sleep dart supply |
| Pistol holsters | Crafted from hunting materials | How many pistols you can carry at once |
| Armor outfits | Collecting and quests | The Maya Outfit deflects metal projectiles; the Templar Armor raises resistance |
| Trinkets | Exploration and collecting | Passive bonuses — a new equipment category in the remake |
| Swords and pistols | Shops, chests, quests | Affect damage and combo feel |
The gear line doesn’t depend on story progress — as long as you have the materials, you can craft.
Fortress Unlocks#
Capturing a fortress unlocks a second fire mode for each of the Jackdaw’s weapons — a new system in the remake, and the single biggest jump in naval power.
| Item | Notes |
|---|---|
| How to unlock | Capture a fortress |
| Effect | An extra firing mode for each side of the hull and the main weapons |
| Priority | Take at least two fortresses by mid-game |
| Extra payoff | Fortresses also hold chests and rare materials inside |
Common Misconceptions#
| Misconception | Reality |
|---|---|
| Higher level means stronger | There are no levels — strength depends only on gear and player skill |
| Skill points can be respecced | No skill point system exists at all |
| Officers are just story characters | Officers directly grant Jackdaw abilities and are core progression |
| Grinding enemies makes you stronger | Grinding pays out money and materials — never character stats |
| Lower difficulty hides mechanics | Difficulty can be switched at any time and has nothing to do with ability unlocks |
| Trinkets are cosmetic | Trinkets carry passive bonuses and are worth collecting deliberately |
