The Protagonist#
Edward Kenway#
Welsh by birth and the lead of the whole story, Edward Kenway is no-born Assassin. His goal at the start is simple: make a fortune off the war and carry it back to England. The entire campaign is about how that plan ends up changing him instead.
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Background | Welsh, modest upbringing, a former privateer |
| Family | Wife Caroline Scott and daughter Jennifer |
| Turning point | He assumes the identity of the Assassin defector he killed, and is pulled into the conflict between Assassins and Templars |
| Where he ends up | He shifts from chasing wealth to shouldering responsibility for his family and the Creed |
The remaster adds new scenes between Edward and Caroline, filling an emotional gap the original was often criticized for.
The Crew#
| Character | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Adéwalé | Quartermaster | Born enslaved, he becomes a true Assassin and later the lead of his own standalone chapter |
| The captains of Kenway’s Fleet | Fleet | Captured enemy ships sail trade routes under their command |
Across this game, Adéwalé is Edward’s steadiest partner and the only person who stands by him from beginning to end.
The Pirates#
| Character | Traits |
|---|---|
| Blackbeard (Edward Thatch) | The heart of the Nassau pirates; the remaster adds a treasure-themed side quest that ties into Edward’s daughter Jennifer |
| Charles Vane | A hot-tempered captain who wants to keep plundering rather than accept the pardon |
| Stede Bonnet | The aristocrat “Gentleman Pirate”; the remaster expands his ending into a full quest line, widely rated the best new story content |
| Mary Read | Operates disguised as a man under the name James Kidd, and becomes one of Edward’s key mentors |
| Anne Bonny | A female pirate with a close bond to Mary Read |
| Benjamin Hornigold | A veteran captain of Nassau who later defects to the other side |
Their shared fate: the golden age of the pirate republic is over, and everyone has to pick a side.
The Templars#
| Character | Role |
|---|---|
| Bartholomew Roberts | Ostensibly a pirate captain, in truth the Sage, and the key to the Observatory trail |
| Laureano de Torres y Ayala | Governor of Cuba and head of the Templar order across the Caribbean |
| Woodes Rogers | The new governor on the British side and a supporter of the Templar apparatus |
| Duncan Walpole | The Assassin defector Edward kills, whose identity Edward then assumes |
The Templars here are not one-note villains; they have a clear goal of their own: find the Observatory and control it.
Historical Figures#
| Character | The history |
|---|---|
| Blackbeard | A real pirate captain, killed in battle in 1718 |
| Robert Maynard | A real Royal Navy officer, the man who ended Blackbeard; the remaster’s new finale chapter revolves around hunting him |
| Stede Bonnet | The real “Gentleman Pirate” |
| Mary Read and Anne Bonny | Real female pirates |
| Bartholomew Roberts | A legendary real-life captain |
| Benjamin Hornigold | A real pirate leader who later accepted the British pardon |
Weaving real historical figures together with invented characters is a series tradition, and this entry keeps it up.
New Officers#
The remaster adds three recruitable officers, each with a standalone quest line and one Jackdaw ability.
| Officer | Background | Ability |
|---|---|---|
| Lucy Baldwin | A shipwright first found locked up aboard a warship | Perfect block, which cancels most incoming damage |
| The Priest (Abel Garvan) | Settled in a small village, with a less-than-clean past | Ramming charge |
| Tobias “Dead Man” Smith | Tied to the finale chapter | Double broadside fire |
The three officer storylines are solid side content, and reviews generally note that their production values sit a notch below the main story.
New Supporting Characters#
| Character | Notes |
|---|---|
| Bernard Woodhouse | The former butler of the Great Inagua manor, new in the remaster, threading together the manor-building and collectible lines |
| Milo Vandergraff | Existed only through letters in the original; the remaster brings him on screen in person, handing out naval contracts face to face |
| Caroline Scott | Edward’s wife, given a bigger part in the remaster |
