Core Loop#

The original Black Flag ran combat on the “counter” — wait for the enemy to swing, press the counter key, and the pace crawls. The remake swaps it for an action-oriented structure:

Step What it does
Observe Read each enemy’s wind-up and tell normal attacks from unblockable ones
Block Hold to enter defense; correct timing turns it into a perfect block
Guard break Use heavy attacks on enemies with a defense bar to wear it down
Execute Follow a perfect block or a successful guard break with an execution — they can chain
Clean up Finish survivors with pistols, throwables, or the rope dart

To be clear up front: this game is not an RPG. The developers stress that there are no levels and no stat-crushing — strength comes only from gear, trinkets, and player skill.

The Defense Bar#

Concept What it looks like How to handle it
Defense bar Some enemies carry an extra defense indicator above their head Heavy attacks and executions drain it fastest
Normal attack Can be absorbed by blocking Correct timing triggers a perfect block
Unblockable attack Comes with a clear warning cue Can only be dodged — blocking it breaks your guard and interrupts your chain
Guard break The stagger once the defense bar is drained The best window to land heavy attacks and executions

The overall rhythm rule: better to step back half a pace and let the enemy swing first than to push forward into their attacks. The payoff from a perfect block far outweighs landing the first slash.

The Execution Chain#

A perfect block is the entry point to the execution chain — one successful perfect block can stretch an execution into up to four hits.

Step Notes
Opener A perfect block, or shattering an enemy’s guard
Chained executions Each execution flows into the next target, up to four in a row
What interrupts it Getting hit by an unblockable attack, or the target leaving attack range
Setup In crowd fights, pull enemies into similar positions first — the chain is harder to break

The four-hit chain is your core crowd-clearing tool; once it’s second nature, fighting one enemy and fighting a mob look almost identical.

Weapons and Combos#

Weapon Role How it links
Twin swords Main melee work Light-attack combos, interleaved with the execution chain
Hidden blade Assassinations and finishers Execute from behind or above, or close out a combo with it
Pistols Ranged finisher Slot into combos to interrupt distant enemies or finish off low health
Rope dart Control Pull enemies closer, or hang them from beams and masts
Blowpipe Stealth Berserk darts and sleep darts for sowing confusion

The rope dart opens up in Sequence 3 and is the remake’s double boost to combat and stealth alike: pulling an enemy in speeds up your opening, and hanging one outright clears sentries on high ground and masts.

Tools#

Tool Best moment
Smoke bombs When surrounded or when you need to disengage; step into the smoke and go straight for back executions
Pistols To interrupt an enemy winding up an unblockable attack
Blowpipe (berserk dart) Make enemies attack each other and ease frontal pressure
Blowpipe (sleep dart) When you need to leave a survivor, or don’t want to alert patrols
Throwables Interrupt distant enemies calling for reinforcements

Tool capacity is set by gear upgrades — crafting a few ammo pouch upgrades noticeably extends your staying power across consecutive fights.

Environment#

The remake lets you fight with walls, ledges, and destructibles, which makes positioning far more important than in the original.

Feature Use
Walls and pillars Pin enemies against walls to limit their movement; executions have matching wall animations
High ground and ledges Kick enemies off heights, or take the high ground yourself and open up with pistols
Destructibles Lure enemies close, then blow them up for area damage
Narrow passages Limit how many enemies can engage at once and avoid being pinched from several directions

Enemy Types#

Type Traits Key points
Common sailors One-note attacks, no defense bar Use them to practice blocking and execution chains
British and Spanish regulars Form up in groups, carry defense bars Break the guard first, then execute
Heavy armored soldiers Resist interruptions Must be handled with heavy attacks or executions
Captains and target figures Higher health Clear the surrounding fodder mid-fight, then duel them one-on-one
Ship guards Tight spaces Deal with them first during boarding, or you’ll get boxed in at the center of the deck

Common Mistakes#

Mistake Result Correction
Holding block forever You get normal defense, never a perfect block Release and re-press; time it deliberately
Blocking an unblockable attack Guard broken, chain interrupted Dodge the instant you see the warning cue
Tunnel-visioning one target Others interrupt you from the side Use the rope dart or pistols to control multiple directions first
Skipping heavy attacks Enemies with defense bars barely die Break their guard with heavies, then run the combo
Ignoring tools Low margin for error in crowd fights Smoke bombs and pistols are extensions of your chain
No ammo pouch upgrades You resupply after every two fights Craft ammo and dart pouch upgrades ahead of time
