What Changed in Stealth#
In the original Black Flag, stealth offered only two options — hiding in tall grass and blending into crowds — and one slip meant a failed synchronization. The remake makes three fundamental changes:
| Change | Effect |
|---|---|
| Crouch anywhere | No longer limited to tall grass; any ground works, directly affecting mid- and long-range detection |
| Visibility and light | Light, shadow, cover, and movement all feed into the check |
| No more restarts | Being spotted while tailing or eavesdropping only switches the target; the mission continues |
Put together, stealth turns from a memorized script into a system you can actually work with.
Crouching and Visibility#
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Standing | The largest silhouette; noticeable even at mid range |
| Crouching | Reduces silhouette and noise; the default travel stance |
| Light | Shadows and interiors are easier to hide in; open ground by day relies on cover |
| Movement | Sprinting raises noise sharply; drop to walking before closing on a target |
| Height | Moving on rooftops and masts does not alert ground patrols |
When detection is set to forgiving, enemies notice you much more slowly; if stealth feels tedious, adjust it in the difficulty settings — trophies are unaffected.
Observation Mode#
Observation mode is an extension of Eagle Vision: gather all the information on an area before you act.
| Use | Notes |
|---|---|
| Mark enemies | Shows patrol positions and the direction of their sightlines |
| Mark interactables | Ammo crates, breakable objects, and climbing points all highlight |
| Predict patrols | Watch one full loop from a distance, then decide where to strike |
| Find entrances | Observation mode reveals rooftop skylights and side doors — the non-frontal ways in |
Make it a habit: open observation mode before entering any stronghold, sweep the whole area, then decide where to start.
Hiding and Breaking Pursuit#
| Method | Best for |
|---|---|
| Tall grass and bushes | The most universal; duck in within line of sight to cut off tracking |
| Crowds | Most effective in cities and ports; blend in and walk away slowly |
| Water and under boats | Pursuers will not enter the water — break pursuit while advancing along the shore underwater |
| Rooftops | High ground does not disturb the street, but watch the musketeers’ sightlines |
| Sleep darts | Use the blowpipe to put sentries to sleep instead of killing them — ideal for missions that require live targets |
When pursued, prefer crowds and water, then rooftops — rooftops add vertical distance, but once you are marked, shaking pursuit is not easy.
Tailing and Eavesdropping#
This is the category the remake reworked most thoroughly.
| Situation | Original | Remake |
|---|---|---|
| Spotted by the target | Synchronization fails; start over | The mission objective switches; you keep going |
| What follows | Nothing but a retry | A fight, a chase, or continued investigation in a new location |
| Error margin | Extremely low | Room to adapt on the spot |
In other words, being spotted is no longer a failure but a branching path. Go loud if you want, or follow the prompts to the next objective for the safe route.
Stronghold Infiltration#
The remake adds dedicated puzzles and infiltration routes to many strongholds; the original’s fixed kill-the-captain-take-the-key-open-the-door routine has been reworked.
| Target | Common solutions |
|---|---|
| Fortress | Approach from the side or underwater, clear the gun batteries and watchtowers first, then handle the garrison |
| Warehouse | Most have rooftop routes or back doors; a frontal assault has the worst payoff |
| Manors and estates | Listen through walls, climb through windows, loop around via the second floor — use observation mode to find alternate entrances |
| Some main quests | Offer dual solutions: pay for equipment to push through, or negotiate directly at a pirate haven |
The universal infiltration formula: scout with observation mode → slip in from a height or underwater → use sleep darts to keep guards alive → deal with the target → exit the way you came.
Notoriety and Manhunts#
| State | Behavior | Handling |
|---|---|---|
| Unalerted | Patrols follow fixed routes | Assassinate as normal |
| Suspicious | They search the last known position | Leave in a different direction; never backtrack the same route |
| Searching | The whole stronghold hunts for you | Hide in grass or take to the water and wait for the state to decay |
| Naval notoriety | Enemy fleets actively intercept you | Sink the hunter ships or just run; a lasting notoriety restricts your freedom to sail |
Notoriety at sea can be reduced step by step by repelling the pursuing flotilla; running away is easier, but you will be hunted again on your next voyage.
