FAQ#
This page gathers the questions asked most often after launch. Anything that depends on later patches reflects the game’s state as of mid-September.
Is It a Soulslike?#
The word shows up in the store tags, and the gameplay carries parries, poise, and executions - but on several key points this game runs opposite to a typical soulslike:
| Point of comparison | How this game handles it |
|---|---|
| Death cost | No lost experience, no lost currency, no lost items - you simply revive back at camp |
| Map structure | Chapter-divided zones, not an interlocking vertical labyrinth |
| Combat rhythm | Parry-driven offense-defense swings, not pure stamina management |
| Party | A fixed one-woman-one-dog pair; Koo joins fights through commands |
The director has been clear about it too: he had no intention of making an especially punishing game, and the intent is that winning requires working effectively with Koo. It’s closer to “an action game that demands you read the rhythm” than “a soulslike that uses difficulty to turn people away.”
What Happens When You Die#
Almost nothing. Experience, currency, and items are all kept; you revive at the last camp you rested at, and doors opened and shortcuts unlocked along the way stay that way after revival.
The only indirect cost: resting at camp makes regular enemies reappear.
Is There Multiplayer or Co-op?#
No. This is a strictly single-player game. All the one-woman-one-dog cooperation happens between you and the AI.
Can Difficulty Be Changed?#
Yes. Difficulty never affects story or drops - only enemy damage and poise behavior. The game also offers a mode that visibly lowers incoming damage, but even there, blocking, dodging, and commanding Koo remain mandatory - it is not a “brainless steamroll” mode.
How Long Is the Campaign?#
The main line runs about thirty hours. Full achievements and the platinum generally take two playthroughs.
Is There New Game Plus?#
Yes, with carryover. NG+ also involves higher-difficulty options and convenience features like zone skipping, some of which arrived in later patches or are on the plans.
Is the Platinum Hard?#
Not hard, but it takes patience - mostly the two playthroughs and the category-based collecting. The good news: there are no strict missable limits - anything skipped in the first run can be recovered in the second.
Is Chinese Supported?#
Yes. Simplified and Traditional Chinese are both among the eleven officially supported subtitle languages. Voice comes in Japanese and English, and the toggle lives only in the main menu.
For completeness on the Chinese title: the game’s official Traditional Chinese name is the traditional-character rendering of “Beast of Reincarnation,” with a matching Simplified form. A few Chinese outlets render the name slightly differently - they all refer to this same game.
Has the Game Stabilized?#
Far better than launch day. Between August 9 and September 17 the studio shipped six patches covering camera, text size, subtitles, upscaling and frame generation support, ultrawide, cutscene skipping, combat balance, and a long list of fixes. Updates were still rolling as of mid-September. The full log is on Version Updates.
Is It on a Subscription Service?#
It joined Xbox Game Pass on day one. No subscription service covers the PS5 version.
Are There Paid Expansions?#
As of mid-September, no. Every announced follow-up is a free update - no season pass, paid expansion, or content roadmap has been announced. The complete main story and combat system were included in the base versions at launch.
Where Are Saves?#
Saving happens through resting at camps, and camps are the only stable save nodes. Resting once before a long push is the cheapest habit you can build.
Can You Play It on a Handheld?#
For the PC version on handheld devices, compatibility certification follows the platform holder’s pages; the official store listing includes handheld and cloud-gaming support. Image quality and frame rate on handhelds are bounded by device performance.

A Few More That Come Up Often#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can I save anytime? | Saving happens by resting at camps, which are the only stable save nodes |
| How much do I redo after dying? | Just walk back from the last camp; opened doors and shortcuts stay open |
| Is there co-op? | No - strictly single-player |
| The story confuses me | Thirty talkable guardian statues and environmental documents are the main narrative entry points |
| Must I do side quests? | Zone side quests pay stat points and materials - effectively growth resources, so clear them as they come |
| Will I hit a wall? | Yes. When stuck, first check whether upgrades are stuck at the cap and whether Koo only has one art |
| Controller or keyboard and mouse? | Controller feels better; keyboard works but rebinding is advised |
| Cloud saves? | Saves and achievements sync across both ecosystems; specifics follow the platform pages |
On “Is It Worth Playing Now?”#
Lay out what’s known:
| Dimension | Current state |
|---|---|
| Launch problems | Too-close camera, tiny subtitles, unstable performance - the loudest launch-week criticisms |
| Patch response | Six patches in six weeks; the issues above were all directly addressed |
| Core strengths | Parry-driven combat, the blighted-forest visuals, and the Emma-and-Koo relationship |
| Content volume | About thirty hours of main line, plus NG+ |
| Paid content | No paid expansion or season pass; everything since has been free updates |
The conclusion can be plain: if launch performance turned you away, re-evaluating now is reasonable; if you never liked timing-driven action gameplay in the first place, no number of patches will change that.
