Quest Guide#

Atomfall has no quest system in the traditional sense: no quest log, no quest numbering, and no navigation markers telling you where to go next. The entire game is driven by leads — every document you find, every recording you play, every conversation you have in the quarantine zone can become a new entry on the Leads panel. This page skips “what to do in chapter X” and instead explains the progression logic itself: how the Leads system works, which leads are required for the main story, what each of the five regions holds, and how to choose among the six ending routes.

The Leads System: What “Quests” Mean Here#

Basic Rules#

Question Answer
Where is the quest list It doesn’t exist — progression runs entirely on the Leads panel
How does the main story advance Gather leads, cross-reference them, and follow the deductions to new locations or new people
How do side quests trigger Unlocked by non-essential leads — including side events and optional locations
What if I miss a lead As long as you collect all main-story essential leads, completion is unaffected — the rest only concern side and optional content
Are there recommended levels No — threat depends on the region and your gear, not on numeric gates

The Four Actions on the Leads Panel#

  1. Register — after looting documents, listening to recordings, talking to people, and reaching key locations, related entries register themselves on the panel; there is no “accept quest” action.
  2. Cross-reference — connect entries on the panel that corroborate each other to generate deductions pointing at new locations or people; this is the core way the main story advances.
  3. Verify — a deduction only tells you a direction to go; how to get in once you arrive, who to look for, and what to bring are all yours to judge.
  4. Recheck — when stuck, return to the panel and reread entries first; for most “no idea where to go” situations, the answer is already written in a registered lead.

Which objects trigger which leads, and what cross-referencing requires, follow whatever the in-game panel actually shows — such details may be adjusted in updates.

The Main-Story Essential Leads#

The game contains 27 leads in total, of which only 9 are required for the main story; the rest unlock side content and optional locations. The verified main-story essential leads include:

Lead Type Role in the Main Story
The Interchange Location The underground hub connecting all regions — the core venue for main-story progress
The Interchange’s entrances Lead group The prerequisite for entering the Interchange — entrances are scattered across regions and must be opened one by one
Atomic battery Key item The pivotal object driving the endgame — directly tied to the truth about Oberon
Signal redirector Key device The equipment for contacting the outside world beyond the quarantine zone
St. Katherine’s Church Location A key location pointed to by the main-story essential leads
Oberon Central mystery The secret beneath Windscale — every route must ultimately face it

Two clarifications: first, the table above covers the verified major entries — the complete 9-item list follows whatever the in-game Leads panel shows; second, “main-story essential” means a completion threshold, not a collection goal — missing any number of non-essential leads never blocks you from reaching an ending.

Guide to the Five Regions#

The surface of the quarantine zone consists of four major regions, and the Interchange links them all underground, with its depths leading to the secret Oberon facility. There is no forced progression order; the guidance below follows the pacing most players experience — but you can absolutely follow your own leads instead.

Region Terrain Main Threat Main-Story Content
Slatten Dale Countryside and abandoned farmsteads Raiders The first region after you wake up — learn the Leads panel and the survival rules
Wyndham Village town Deeply wary settlers The trading and intel hub — the contact point for several character lines
Casterfell Woods Dense forest and fog The cult Cult camps and ritual grounds — the core region of the cult line
Skethermoor Open moorland Military checkpoints Barracks and holding points — the core region of the military line
The Interchange Underground research facility The research organization The underground hub connecting all regions — its depths lead to Oberon

Slatten Dale: The Starting Ground and Rule Tutorial#

  • The protagonist wakes in an abandoned bunker with nothing but a lead board already filled with entries — loot the bunker dry before anything else.
  • The raider strongholds here are the best practice targets for the game’s survival rules: looting rhythm, inventory management, and stealthy detours all get learned in this region.
  • Abandoned farmhouses and small strongholds hide plenty of early documents and recordings — when you meet a door or lock you can’t open, note the location and come back with tools.
  • From here you can reach Wyndham and the other regions — which one to visit first is decided by the leads you’ve registered, not by any fixed map order.

Wyndham: The Supply and Intel Base#

  • One of the few ordered places in the quarantine zone, with shops, gatherings, and armed men keeping the peace — treat it as your relay point for supplies and information.
  • The villagers are extremely wary of strangers — not stirring up trouble is the first law of standing here.
  • Several faction lines cross paths in the village — listen for the ringing of the red telephone box; answering the call from the mysterious contact is often a major node in the main story.
  • Restock lockpicking tools, medical supplies, and ammo before leaving — the regions ahead only demand more of these consumables.

Casterfell Woods: The Cult’s Territory#

  • Mother Jago’s cult has settled here, viewing the power beneath Windscale as a blessing — they will actively try to recruit you.
  • Visibility is poor and sounds scatter in the forest, so encounters flare up at close range — slowing your pace and listening for footsteps matters more than making distance.
  • The cult’s ritual sites and camps are scattered through the trees — most leads tied to the cult line get verified in these woods.
  • Whether to bond with the cult depends on which ending line you want — the true purpose of their rituals is worth investigating before you make any delivery choice.

Skethermoor: The Military’s Blockade Line#

  • Checkpoints, patrols, and barbed-wire blockades are the main threat — charging straight through is expensive; detours and covered movement are the norm.
  • Captain Sims’s barracks sits here — he controls a channel out of the quarantine zone, but trust must be bought with intel.
  • Dr. Garrow, held by the military, is also in this region — rescuing her ties directly into one ending line about going public with the truth.
  • The moorland is wide open — use terrain, buildings, and vegetation for cover while moving; breaking contact after being spotted costs far more than detouring in advance.

The Interchange and Oberon: The Underground Answers#

  • The Interchange connects multiple regions of the quarantine zone underground — once the entrance leads are gathered, many previously unreachable places open from here.
  • The research organization’s staff, equipment, and archives concentrate on the hub level — the facility’s true purpose gradually reveals itself as you explore.
  • Deeper still lies Oberon — the secret beneath Windscale, the truth of the accident years ago, and the protagonist’s own origins all get answered on this level.
  • Organize your gear and supplies before descending into Oberon — the endgame delivery choice lies just ahead.

Stage Goal Notes
Getting started Loot the bunker and Slatten Dale Learn the Leads panel and the survival rules
Settling in Reach Wyndham and restock Establish your own base of intel and supplies
Expanding Follow leads through the woods and the moor Make contact with the cult, the military, and the various character lines
Converging Open all the Interchange entrances Connect the scattered regional leads underground
Endgame Descend into Oberon and make the delivery Walk toward one of the six ending routes

This table is a pacing reference, not a progress lock — every region can be visited first in this game; what actually decides your progress is the entries on the Leads panel, not the order of regions.

Overview of the Six Ending Routes#

Once you have uncovered the truth, whoever you hand it to decides which ending route you walk. Each of the six endings binds to a faction or character line and corresponds to its own ending achievement (achievement names and unlock conditions follow the in-game achievement list).

Ending Route Bound Faction/Character Line Route Notes
Give it to the voice on the phone The mysterious contact A route where you only ever hear a voice — the most ambiguous and hardest to judge
Hand it to Captain Sims The military Turn the intel over to the military — trade it for an official way out
Work with Joyce Tanner Independent agent Leave the quarantine zone through her channels — both sides have their own agenda
Help Dr. Garrow The scientist opposing the cover-up Make the Windscale truth public — the secret no longer hoarded
Hand it to Dr. Holder The research organization Let the secret return to institutional hands — everything keeps running as before
Confront Oberon yourself What lies beneath Windscale Skip faction allegiance entirely — walk into the zone’s deepest mystery in person

The six routes carry no official ranking of better or worse; they are more like six exits from the same set of facts: hand the truth to the institution, to an individual, make it public, or leave it buried underground. The endgame hinges on the final recipient, and every character line you pursued beforehand colors that judgment — each faction’s stance and background is covered on our Lore page; exploration details for each terrain and location can be found in World Exploration.
