Apex Legends Combat System and Shield Mechanics#
The outcome of an Apex fight usually depends not on who fires first, but on who strips the enemy’s shields first and who still has healing resources left. Getting shield and healing management under control shows up in your rank faster than a hundred hours of aim practice.
The Shield Core#
Starting in Season 20, shields come from the shield core, which levels up by accumulating Evolution points (Evo) instead of by picking up a higher-tier shield. Dealing damage, completing objectives, and activating harvesters all build Evo.
| Tier | Color | Shield capacity | Total effective health (including 100 base health) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | White | 50 | 150 |
| Tier 2 | Blue | 75 | 175 |
| Tier 3 | Purple | 100 | 200 |
| Tier 4 | Red | 125 | 225 |
Red shields can only be earned through evolution and cannot be picked up directly. After being knocked down and picked back up, your shield does not return to full — it has to recharge.
Armor Swapping: the Strongest Survival Mechanism in the Game#
Picking up a new shield from a death box instantly refills your shield to its current tier’s capacity, far faster than popping batteries where you stand. Once your shield breaks mid-fight, the correct first reaction is not to find cover and heal — it is to check whether a bin is nearby.
| Situation | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Armor broke mid-fight, bin nearby | Armor swap | A full shield at near-zero time cost |
| Armor broke mid-fight, no bin | Fall back to cover and use a Shield Battery | Five seconds to full, safer than a Med Kit |
| Armor damaged but intact | Use a Shield Cell | Two and a half seconds, great value |
| Both health and shield down | Phoenix Kit | Ten seconds for a full restore — only in absolute safety |
Note: ring damage and Caustic gas bypass shields and take health directly. Entering the ring in red armor is not safety.
Healing Items#
| Item | Restores | Use time | When to use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Syringe | 25 health | 4 seconds | Top up light damage; risky mid-fight |
| Med Kit | Full health | 8 seconds | Full heal in a safe position |
| Shield Cell | 25 shield | 2.5 seconds | Your most-used recovery item |
| Shield Battery | Full shield | 5 seconds | Between teamfights |
| Phoenix Kit | Full health + full shield | 10 seconds | Full reset after a big teamfight |
Carry plan: two slots of Shield Cells, one Shield Battery, one Syringe slot, and one or two Phoenix Kits. Because the Med Kit takes long to use and occupies many slots, one per match is usually enough.
Knockdowns and Finishers#
| Knockdown | Rule |
|---|---|
| First knockdown | Revivable by teammates for ninety seconds |
| Second | Sixty seconds |
| Third | Thirty seconds |
| Every time after | Fifteen seconds |
While down you can crawl slowly and deploy a knockdown shield against frontal fire. Finishing a downed enemy with an execution refills your shields instantly, but the animation locks your character for several seconds — only do it after confirming no one else is around.
The moment a teammate drops, decide immediately: grab the banner card or let them go. Every additional knockdown shortens the revive window — dragging out to the third is basically a permanent elimination.
Throwables#
| Throwable | Effect | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Frag Grenade | Area blast with knockback | Flushing defenders, interrupting revives |
| Thermite | Burns an area over time | Sealing doors and blocking chokepoints |
| Arc Star | Sticks, explodes, briefly disables | Pressuring people behind cover, shredding armor |
| Ultimate Accelerant | Speeds ultimate charge | Use between fights |
Throwables are worth the most in the endgame: in the last three circles, throwables and abilities are the only tools left that force enemies off cover.
Damage Detection and Hitboxes#
| Hitbox | Rough multiplier | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Head | Well above body | Snipers and pistols gain the most from headshots |
| Body | Baseline | Where most guns do their main damage |
| Limbs | Slightly below body | Shotgun spread lands even wider in practice |
Hit detection runs on the actual projectile path. Apex mixes hitscan and ballistic models — snipers and some marksman weapons show clear bullet drop, so raise your crosshair at long range.
The Four Phases of a Fight#
| Phase | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Before contact | How many enemies there are, and whether a third squad is nearby |
| After opening fire | Whose shields broke first, and whether anyone on our side got isolated |
| Reload window | Whether to push during their reload, or armor swap in the gap |
| Wrap-up | Whether to chase, whether to heal immediately, whether to grab the banner card |
Common Combat Mistakes#
| Mistake | Consequence | Correct play |
|---|---|---|
| Trading shots with broken armor | Your health bar is exposed to their gun | Fall back to cover first, then swap armor or use a battery |
| Chasing too far | Out of formation and hit by the counterattack | Never chase further than one street |
| Looting healing first on landing | Empty hands when you meet an enemy | A gun outranks everything |
| Executing without checking around | Wiped by a third party mid-animation | Confirm safety before executing |
| Ignoring ring damage | Even red armor bleeds health to the ring | Plan your rotation route before the ring closes |
Deciding Whether to Fight#
A simple decision order: first check whether the numbers are even, then whether the terrain favors you, and finally whether your resources can carry this wave. If two of the three are against you, disengage; fighting through all three against is the fastest way to lose rank points.
