Deadlock Guide#
Deadlock is Valve’s mashup of MOBA structure and third-person shooting, built on Source 2 and playable now on Steam. On September 29, 2026, Valve shipped the largest content update the game has ever received — “City Never Sleeps” — landing everything at once: a fully rebuilt New York-flavored map called the Cursed Apple, six new heroes whose launch order was decided by community vote, nine themed Haunt camps, and the Broker, a high-risk, high-reward trading system. This hub covers every core system now live in the game, from beginner onboarding and three-lane play to the soul economy, camp farming, district guides, Broker gambles, and the reworked shop.

What Kind of Game Is Deadlock?#
The easiest way to read Deadlock is to split it into three layers. The MOBA skeleton runs the macro game: three lanes pushing, minion waves colliding, kill bounties, and item-based progression. The shooter layer runs the micro game: third-person aiming, gun ballistics, and mobility abilities. And the newest addition, the map economy layer, turns district resource points, Haunt camps, and Broker trades into a third front. The layers interlock — aim and positioning set your floor in lane, the soul economy sets how fast you scale, and contests over map resources decide which way the soul gap swings.
After “City Never Sleeps,” the Cursed Apple bears little resemblance to the old map. The three main lanes have been renamed Broadway, Greenwich, and York; four new districts fill the gaps between them; and every neutral camp has been replaced by nine themed Haunts. Scattered across the map you will now find hardened crates that take heavy hits to crack open, golden statues that grant permanent buffs when destroyed, and a roaming Broker who restocks every 15 minutes.
Current Version Focus: City Never Sleeps#
This is the biggest update Valve has ever shipped for Deadlock, and its density comes down to a handful of numbers:
- 4 districts — Plaza, Chinatown, Haunted Lot, and Theatre, slotted into the empty space between the lanes. Together with the underground Sunken Plaza beneath the main square, they add a new layer of resource contests.
- 9 Haunt camps — every old neutral camp is gone, replaced by district-themed Haunts, and no two camps behave the same way.
- 6 new heroes — the launch order was decided by player vote: the first arrived October 2, with one more hero every Tuesday and Friday after that.
- The Broker — a roaming merchant who first appears roughly 30 minutes into a match, ready to trade your high-tier items for Corrupted Items carrying random debuffs.
- A full shop and HUD overhaul — expanded health-bar information, a new Event Feed, and real-time Popular Items data showing what the rest of the lobby is building.
October Release Calendar#
The opening month of “City Never Sleeps” runs on a fixed schedule worth keeping on your calendar:
| Date (Pacific Time) | Event |
|---|---|
| September 29 | “City Never Sleeps” launches; hero voting opens |
| October 2 (Friday), 14:00 | First new hero goes live; priority tokens introduced; the Broker retires the same day |
| October 6 (Tuesday), 14:00 | Second hero goes live |
| October 9 (Friday), 14:00 | Third hero goes live |
| October 13 (Tuesday), 14:00 | Fourth hero goes live |
| October 16 (Friday), 14:00 | Fifth hero goes live |
| October 20 (Tuesday), 14:00 | Sixth hero goes live, completing the roster |
The Broker steps away in sync with the first hero launch, so October 2 is your only window to experience Corrupted Item trades before he is gone.
Deadlock is in Early Access, and mechanics and content can shift quickly between versions. This hub is written against the “City Never Sleeps” version as of October 1, 2026; if future patches adjust systems, pages will carry their update dates.
FAQ#
Is Deadlock free?#
Valve has not published one unified answer for how access works during the closed testing phase. Check the in-game client and the Steam page for the current state of things.
What stage of development is the game in?#
Deadlock is in Early Access, still in closed testing since August 2024, and no official release date has been announced.
How is the release order for new heroes decided?#
Players vote in the Pregame lobby, and votes from the winning team count double.
What happened to the neutral camps?#
They were removed entirely. In their place are nine themed Haunt camps, each with its own behavior.
Is trading with the Broker safe?#
Every trade attaches a random debuff, and both teams see the same numbers. Whether a swap is worth it comes down to your read of the match.
Will my PC run Deadlock?#
Official system requirements have not been published yet, so this hub sticks to actionable settings and optimization advice rather than spec guesses.
