Destiny 2 Guide#
Game Overview#
Destiny 2 is Bungie’s shared-world shooter MMO. You play as a Guardian, a warrior powered by the Light, running missions across Earth and the wider solar system, tackling raids, chasing loot, and pushing your Power level ever higher. The game fuses first-person shooting with RPG progression, wrapping it all in a sprawling sci-fi universe, a weekly-refreshed activity loop, and a live-service season model.
Since Beyond Light began vaulting older content, Bungie has been bringing that content back year by year, reopening campaigns, destinations, and raids to every player. It is the perfect time to master this shooter MMO — and this guide hub covers everything.

The Three Classes#
Guardians come in three classes, each with its own class ability, super, and gear leanings.
| Class | Role | Class Ability | Signature Supers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Titan | Frontline tank and area suppression | Barricade (blocks enemy fire) | Sentinel, Sunbreaker |
| Warlock | Buffs and crowd clearing | Rift (Healing / Empowering) | Dawnblade, Nova Warp |
| Hunter | Mobility and precision damage | Dodge | Golden Gun, Spectral Blades |
Every class branches subclasses across three elements — Arc, Solar, and Void — three elemental branches in all, plus Prismatic, a composite subclass that stands apart from pure Light alone.
Weapons and Damage Types#
| Damage Type | Description | Counters |
|---|---|---|
| Kinetic | Non-elemental physical damage | Enemies without elemental shields |
| Arc | Shock damage | Arc-shielded enemies |
| Solar | Fire damage | Solar-shielded enemies |
| Void | Void damage | Void-shielded enemies |
| Stasis | Ice damage (added with Beyond Light) | Stasis-shielded enemies |
Enemy shields come in elemental colors: matching your damage type to a shield breaks it quickly and sets off elemental shatter damage.

Power Level and Loot#
Power level is the core measure of a Guardian’s strength in Destiny 2. You raise your Power ceiling through Powerful reward sources, exotic quests, and raids. The game tracks two numbers — effective Power level and baseline gear Power — and in group activities, the Crucible, and Trials, your score is corrected against your equipped gear, so average gear Power matters more than any single drop.
| Power Source | Description |
|---|---|
| Standard drops | Blue and purple gear that scales with your Power |
| Powerful rewards | Gold-tier Powerful drops for pushing the soft cap |
| Pinnacle gear | Pinnacle-tier drops for pushing the hard cap |
| Exotic gear | Special drops from raids, dungeons, and quests |
| Seasonal and events | Seasonal challenges and event-exclusive Powerful rewards |
Story and Lore#
The story of Destiny 2 revolves around the eternal struggle between Light and Darkness. Guardians rally in humanity’s Last City to stand against alien races, the Fallen, the Hive, the Vex, and the armies of Darkness. As the expansions march on, the balance of Light and Dark, the fate of the Guardians, and the destiny of the universe unfold layer by layer.
FAQ#
Is Destiny 2 free to play?#
Yes. The base game is free-to-play, while expansions and seasons are paid content.
Which platforms is Destiny 2 on?#
PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
What are the three Guardian classes?#
Titan is the frontline tank, suppressing enemies with Barricade. Warlock is the support class, buffing allies and clearing crowds with Rift. Hunter is the mobile, precision-damage class built around Dodge.
What damage types should I use?#
There are five: Kinetic plus the Arc, Solar, Void, and Stasis elements. Enemy shields are color-coded by element, so bringing the matching damage type breaks shields fast.
How does Power level progression work?#
Powerful reward sources, exotic quests, and raids all raise your Power ceiling. Powerful drops push you toward the soft cap, while Pinnacle gear pushes toward the hard cap.
How long does a season last?#
About three months. Each season runs its own pass, challenges, and adventure content on top of the base game.
What is the difference between raids, dungeons, and strikes?#
Strikes are the Vanguard’s core PvE missions, with Nightfalls as the hardest tier. Dungeons are compact, mechanics-driven challenges. Raids are the deepest activities in the game, built around mechanics and boss encounters.
What is Destiny 2’s story about?#
The war between Light and Darkness. Guardians defend humanity’s Last City against alien races, the Fallen, the Hive, the Vex, and the armies of Darkness, and every expansion pushes the cosmic conflict further.
