Destiny 2 Weapon Systems Guide#
The weapon system sits at the heart of every build in Destiny 2. Weapons are split into Kinetic and Energy slots, and each one comes with a frame, a rarity tier, damage perks, and mod sockets. Mastering these mechanics makes a big difference to both add clearing and boss damage.
Weapon Slots#
| Slot | Description | Type | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kinetic slot | The primary slot, mostly Kinetic or Exotic weapons | Kinetic / Exotic | General damage |
| Energy slot | The Energy weapon slot, tied to elemental damage types | Arc / Solar / Void | Shield breaking |
| Heavy slot | High-damage heavy weapons | Various | Boss damage |
Weapon Rarity#
| Rarity | Color | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Common | White | Basic weapons |
| Uncommon | Green | Low tier |
| Rare | Blue | Mid tier |
| Legendary | Purple | The workhorse tier, with random perks |
| Exotic | Gold | Unique effects, collector’s focus |
Legendary is the rarity players rely on long term, since these weapons roll random perks; Exotics come with their own unique perks and are the centerpiece of collecting and buildcrafting.
Weapon Frames#
A frame determines a weapon’s rate of fire, damage profile, and handling. Different frames suit different combat ranges and playstyles.
| Frame | Type | Traits |
|---|---|---|
| Precision Frame | Precision | High accuracy, moderate rate of fire |
| High-Impact Frame | Heavy | High damage per shot |
| Lightweight Frame | Lightweight | High rate of fire, low damage per shot |
| Aggressive Frame | Aggressive | High mobility and fast reloads |
| Rapid-Fire Frame | Close-range | Machine guns and burst damage |
Weapon Perks#
At Legendary rarity and above, weapons roll a set of perks that affect handling, damage, or trigger special effects.
| Perk | Type | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Frenzy | Damage | Landing hits refunds ammo or boosts damage |
| Swashbuckler | Damage boost | Increased damage after a kill |
| Luck in the Chamber | Accuracy | Crit-focused bonuses |
| Subsistence | Magazine | Reload-focused bonuses |
| Chain Reaction | Add clear | Area-of-effect damage |
The Crafting System (The Enclave / the Armory)#
Through Destiny 2’s crafting system, players unlock a weapon’s pattern, level the weapon up by completing challenges, and finally forge their preferred weapon and perk combination at the Enclave. A crafted weapon carries a distinctive red-border look and can be reshaped again and again.
| Crafting Step | Description |
|---|---|
| Unlock the pattern | Patterns come from activities, raids, or quests |
| Level it up | Earn kills and complete bounties with the weapon |
| Reshape | Customize perks at the Enclave |
| Red-border weapons | The version of a weapon that can be forged |

Weapon Mods#
Weapon mods attach directly to a weapon and grant bonuses to ammo, reloads, aiming, and more. Common mods include Ammo Finders, reload speed boosts, and critical hit boosts.
| Mod | Effect |
|---|---|
| Ammo Finder | Increases drops of a specific ammo type |
| Reload Speed | Speeds up reloads |
| Critical Boost | Boosts critical damage |
| Counterbalance Stock | Affects accuracy and recoil |
How to Get Weapons#
| Source | Description |

| Enclave forging | Built through the crafting system |

Matching Weapons to Elements#
Using a weapon that matches an enemy’s shield element breaks the shield efficiently, triggering an elemental burst that damages nearby enemies. This is a core technique in high-difficulty activities; see the Light subclasses page for the full elemental matchup breakdown.
Weapon Management Tips#
- Prioritize keeping Legendary weapons with damage-boosting perks that fit your current element.
- Collect as complete a set of Exotics as you can, and prioritize leveling up the Exotics you’ve unlocked.
- Forge weapons that can be reshaped repeatedly at the Enclave to save vault space.
- Keep one Kinetic, one Energy, and one Heavy weapon across your different slots.
