Borderlands 4 Guide#
Borderlands 4 is developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games, and it launched on September 12, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam / Epic) as the fourth mainline entry in the Borderlands series. You play as a Vault Hunter on the all-new planet Kairos, taking the fight to the Timekeeper — a villain who can bend space and time — and his synthetic army, The Order, while slipping between freely folding world fragments to farm loot and claim Vaults.
The game carries on the series’ signature cel-shaded art style and its “billions of guns” concept. On top of randomized weapon generation it introduces Licensed Parts and brand-new equipment slots, making build crafting deeper and the loot chase substantially upgraded. A movement kit built from gliding, dashing, a double jump, and grappling-point traversal — plus the customizable Digirunner vehicle — gives both exploration and combat a far more varied rhythm.

World and Story Background#
The stage is Kairos, a fractured planet whose fabric of space and time has been torn apart — a single world where prehistoric swamps, cyberpunk cities, and frozen wastelands coexist as distinct “world fragments.” The game’s villain, the Timekeeper (Chronos), exploits exactly that property of the setting: he commands The Order, a synthetic legion fitted with cybernetic implants called Bolts, and he means to seize the power of the Temporal Vault to flatten every timeline into a single reality under his control.
The Vault Hunters’ task is to beat the Timekeeper to it — gathering the Vault Key Fragments scattered across the world fragments and uncovering the secrets of the Temporal Vault. Where the previous three games leaned on the single goal of “find the Vault,” this entry puts more narrative weight on the tension between fate and choice, and some of those choices unlock dedicated quest lines that only open after you finish the story.
The Four Vault Hunters#
Borderlands 4 offers four Vault Hunters with sharply different roles. Every character has three distinct skill trees plus a Trait that grows alongside your level:
| Character | Role | Signature style |
|---|---|---|
| Vex | Siren | Elemental synergies, summoning phantom doubles, shock and radiation AoE |
| Rafa | Exo-Soldier | Exoskeleton weapons, turret summons, frontline brawling and sustained damage |
| Amon | Forgeknight | Melee plus freezing, rocket-heavy punches, heavy-armor tanking and crowd control |
| Harlowe | Gravitar | Gravity and stasis control, radiation-by-freezing support, team buffs |
Each of the four hunters carries three branching skill trees and a personal Trait, and skill points can be fully refunded at any time — which makes it painless to experiment with builds whenever you like.
Core Gameplay Systems#
Guns and Licensed Parts#
- Eight manufacturers: each weapons maker has a distinctly different feel and set of characteristics, carrying on the series’ “every brand plays different” tradition.
- Licensed Parts: on top of randomized generation, weapons can be fitted with manufacturer-licensed parts for deep customization of both stats and looks.
- Rarity tiers: white, green, blue, purple, and orange (legendary) tiers, with orange gear carrying unique “red text” effects.
New Equipment Slots#
- Ordnance: replaces the traditional grenade slot; grenades and heavy weapons now run on cooldowns and rotate according to tactical need.
- Enhancements: replaces the old Artifacts slot with finer-grained options for power builds.
- Repkits: combat-use healing and buff gear that replaces pure consumable medicine.
Movement and Vehicles#
- Movement kit: gliding, dashing, a double jump, and grappling-point traversal make vertical, three-dimensional exploration far freer.
- Digirunner: an off-road vehicle you can drive and modify across Kairos’s wide-open surface, covering both travel and combat.
- ECHO-4: the series’ signature companion robot, unlocked step by step through the story, providing navigation and support.
Silos and Vaults#
Scattered across the map are Silos: recovering the technology inside lets you lock onto and reveal Vault Key Fragments, which in turn open the way into Vault Dungeons — one of the core endgame loops of the game.
Co-Op and Cross-Play#
- Supports up to 4-player online co-op, plus 2-player split-screen local co-op.
- Full cross-platform play is open across PC / PS5 / Xbox Series X|S.
- Loot and progression can be configured flexibly — shared by default, or set so each player keeps their own pickups.
Getting-Started Essentials#
- Pick the right starting class: new players should begin with a character whose mechanics read clearly and who comes with a companion unit or strong survivability, making the early hours painless.
- Adapt to the new movement early: gliding, dashing, and grappling-point traversal are the core of exploring Kairos — once they are muscle memory, your efficiency jumps.
- Treat the Ordnance slot as a skill, not a consumable: rotate grenades and heavy weapons based on the enemy type in front of you.
- Prioritize recovering Silos: Silos are the prerequisite for locking Vault Key Fragments and entering Vault Dungeons, so the earlier you invest, the less running around later.
- Don’t lock in a build too early: skill points can be refunded anytime, so experiment freely in the early game and focus on a final build later.
Versions and Ongoing Updates#
Post-launch support consists of additional story content and season-pass releases. Patch and DLC tracking lives in the version-updates and expansions sub-guides — see the Full Guides section below for where to find them.
