Touhou Koumakyou: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil Guide#

Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (abbreviated EoSD, series number TH06) is the sixth entry in the Touhou Project and the series’ first Windows-platform title, widely regarded as the stylistic “soft reboot” that defined the series’ modern identity. This hub covers both versions at once: the original, sold on August 11, 2002 at Comiket 62, and the official remake Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic, which arrived on Steam, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PlayStation 5 on September 9, 2026.

How the Original and the New Classic Relate#

The New Classic remake was announced at the Nintendo Direct on June 9, 2026, as the series’ first official remake. Its very existence is dramatic: the original’s source code was lost, which is why the game could never be ported to Steam or other modern platforms for years — so the publisher ultimately chose to rebuild the game as a remake.

The two versions are purchased differently:

Version Contents Price
Steam base bundle New Classic main game + Touhou Koumakyou Classic, the ported original (Steam app ID 4924840) $17.99
Steam deluxe bundle Base bundle contents + soundtrack DLC (Steam app ID 4924910) $24.63 (15% off the base price)
Japanese official-site deluxe Deluxe contents 2,966 yen (tax included)

The New Classic supports 12 languages (including Simplified and Traditional Chinese), contains 24 Steam achievements, offers 1080p high-resolution remade visuals, and features all-new arrangements of every track by ZUN. It adds visible hitbox display, an unlimited-lives mode with a death counter, and a Classic mode that reproduces the original experience. The Steam version also includes platform features such as cloud saves and Steam trading cards.

Reception Data (as of early October 2026)#

Data source Figures
3DM report (September 13, 2026) 2,958 cumulative reviews in the days after launch, 98% positive
Steam store page, English region (captured October 9, 2026) 1,385 English reviews, 97% positive (Overwhelmingly Positive)
SteamDB (updated October 8, 2026) Roughly 4,000 reviews; Steam’s official review-score field at 97%

Review counts are still growing, so when citing these numbers, note the data date and the scope each figure was measured over.

The Core Gameplay Loop#

This is a single-player vertical danmaku shooter: your ship threads through bullet curtains on a vertically scrolling field, defeats enemies to collect items, and faces bosses in spell-card duels. Around that spine, the game established several core systems that the series has used ever since:

  • Spell cards: powerful boss-attack patterns released under fixed rules. All 64 enemy spell cards have official names, and clearing one without getting hit or using a bomb within the time limit grants a bonus.
  • Graze: letting enemy bullets skim past your hitbox counts as graze; each graze is worth 500 points, with a counter cap of 9,999.
  • Power and point items: power rises in eight steps from 8 to 128; at full power, moving to the top of the screen auto-collects every item on screen. A point item’s value depends on the height where you collect it, and higher difficulties pay more at full value.
  • Lives and bombs: 3 of each at the start, 8 at the cap. Extra lives also come from score thresholds of 10 million, 20 million, 40 million, and 60 million (the Extra stage awards no score-based lives).
  • Deathbomb: pressing the bomb key within about 6 frames (roughly 0.1 seconds) of being hit cancels the hit — the core of the game’s advanced survival play.

Stage List#

Stage Setting Boss
Stage 1 Around Misty Lake Rumia
Stage 2 Around Misty Lake Cirno
Stage 3 Scarlet Devil Mansion gate Hong Meiling
Stage 4 Scarlet Devil Mansion library Patchouli Knowledge
Stage 5 Mansion hallways Sakuya Izayoi
Stage 6 Mansion top floor Remilia Scarlet (midboss: Sakuya)
Extra stage Mansion basement Flandre Scarlet (midboss: Patchouli)

Two flow restrictions are worth noting: the demo build only goes through Stage 3, and on Easy difficulty you cannot enter Stage 6 after clearing Stage 5 — so a complete clear does not exist on Easy.

Quick Glossary#

Term Meaning
Player character The character you control; this game has 4 loadouts
Hitbox The vulnerable point at your character’s center, about 5×5 pixels; not displayed in the original
Graze Counted when enemy bullets skim past your character; 500 points each
Spell card A boss attack pattern released under fixed rules; 64 enemy spell cards in this game
Deathbomb Pressing the bomb key within about 6 frames of being hit to cancel the hit
Point item The basic scoring item; its value changes with the height where you collect it
Power item Raises your power level; comes in large and small variants
Star item A score item left behind by defeated enemies or cleared bullets
B item Adds 1 to your bomb count
1UP item Directly adds an extra life
Continue Continuing after all lives are spent; up to 3 times, and it resets your score to zero and triggers the bad ending
  1. Read the controls and basic mechanics first: learn how movement, shooting, bombs, and the deathbomb interact. The hitbox here is tiny and the original never displays it, so you judge by feel and by the shape of the bullet curtain.
  2. Start on Normal: Easy cannot reach Stage 6, so no complete clear exists there; Normal is the minimum bar for a good ending.
  3. Practice one loadout only: the 4 loadouts (Reimu Homing, Reimu Dream, Marisa Magic, Marisa Love) feel very different; pick one for your first run.
  4. Memorize boss spell cards: every spell card is a fixed bullet pattern; use Practice Mode to learn them before a serious attempt.
  5. Then take on the Extra stage: unlock it by clearing the game without continues on Normal or above, using the same character and shot type you cleared with.

Editor’s Note#

This hub is built on publicly available information verified online: release details, system values, spell card names, music tracks, and ending conditions were each checked against their sources. Anything that could not be verified — for example the original’s exact sales figures or the specific names of the New Classic’s 24 achievements — is explicitly marked as unverified rather than guessed. May you, too, find your own direction within the scarlet mist.
