Fortnite Guide#
Fortnite launched in 2017 and grew from a buy-to-play co-op survival game into a multi-mode platform: battle royale, Zero Build, a nostalgia mode, Reload, Creative islands, LEGO survival, a rhythm game, and racing, all hanging off the same client. What makes it special is not raw aim but the fusion of building and shooting — plus a season rhythm that turns over every two to three months.
This hub is organized by “system” rather than by “version”: information that changes, such as season numbers and map points, lives in the season guide, while the other pages cover mechanics and criteria that hold over the long term.

Core Features#
| Feature | Notes |
|---|---|
| Battle Royale | 100 players drop onto an island; the last team standing wins |
| Building | Four pieces — walls, floors, ramps, and cones — placed instantly, with editing and demolition on top |
| Zero Build | A parallel mode with building disabled; fights revolve around Overshields and natural cover |
| Creative islands | Player-made islands, from aim training to parkour |
| Seasons | Every season brings a new theme, a new map, and new pass rewards |
| Shared progression | XP carries across the major modes, so pass progress is no longer tied to a single way to play |
Getting Started#
| Tip | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Start with Zero Build | Skip the building learning curve and drill aim, positioning, and rotation sense first |
| Land far from hot drops | New players do not need to fight over popular spots — dying on landing has no practice value |
| Turn on visual sound effects | The accessibility settings can display the direction of footsteps and gunfire on screen |
| Shields before health | Shields are your effective HP; top them off before a fight |
| Move before the circle closes | Whoever gets chased by the storm is always the one playing reactively |
The full opening routine is laid out in the beginner guide on the Chinese section.
System Requirements#
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10/11 64-bit |
| CPU | Core i3-3225 at 3.3 GHz | Core i5 or better |
| Memory | 8 GB | 16 GB |
| GPU | Integrated Intel HD 4000 | Dedicated GPU, GTX 960 or better |
| Storage | HDD works | SSD with 30 GB or more reserved |
| Network | Broadband connection | Wired connection, low latency |
| System-level graphics | DirectX 11 | DirectX 12 |
The game is extremely forgiving on hardware, and low-end machines run it fine. What actually decides the experience is network latency and a stable frame rate, not the graphics preset.
Controls#
Keyboard and mouse#
| Action | Default key | Advice |

| Move | WASD | Keep default |
| Fire / aim | LMB / RMB | Keep default |

There is no right or wrong keybind — only whether it has become muscle memory. Once you have changed a binding, stop changing it.
Game Modes#
| Mode | Type | Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battle Royale | Core | 100 players | The flagship mode, building and shooting in equal measure |
| Zero Build | Core | 100 players | No building; Overshields replace cover |
| OG | Nostalgia | 100 players | The early chapters’ map and weapons, as they were |
| Reload | Fast-paced | 40 players | Small map with respawns and a faster tempo |
| Blitz Royale | Fast-paced | 32 players | A five-minute-per-match speed version |
| Ranked | Competitive | Varies by mode | Battle Royale and Zero Build carry separate ranks |
| Creative | Player-made | Variable | Training, racing, parkour, and combat of every kind |
| LEGO Fortnite | Survival | Up to 8 | LEGO-styled co-op survival and building |
| Fortnite Festival | Rhythm | Up to 4 | Main Stage and Jam Stage performances |
| Rocket Racing | Racing | Up to 4 | Arcade racing with drifting and wall rides |
| Save the World | Co-op PvE | Up to 4 | Tower-defense missions and hero progression |
Since April 2026, Ballistic and Festival’s Battle Stage have been removed by Epic, and Save the World went free to play. The mode lineup itself rotates as well, so treat the in-client list as the source of truth. The differences between modes and how to choose are covered in the modes guide on the Chinese section.
FAQ#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Does it cost money? | No. The base game and every mode are free; payment only affects cosmetics |
| Is there Chinese? | Both Simplified and Traditional Chinese interfaces are supported |
| Can I connect directly from China? | You need a network accelerator; stable latency matters more than bandwidth |
| Which mode has the most players? | Battle Royale and Zero Build have the fastest matchmaking |
| Is the battle pass worth it? | The pass is built to pay itself back if you play it out — worth it for long-term players |
| How does cross-progression work? | Bind the same Epic account and progress syncs across platforms |
Core Gameplay Summary#
The gap between new players and veterans usually comes down not to “who aims better” but to whether three judgments have become reflexes: are my materials enough, is my position secured, and should this fight happen at all.
Materials first: the first two minutes of a match set its ceiling. Wood is the fastest and thinnest, brick is balanced, metal is the most durable but slowest — the right approach is not “collect as much as possible” but switching by the situation. Then position: every circle has a good side and a dead side; the good side has terrain and elevation to block sightlines, the dead side is open ground plus low ground. Finally, decisions: the overwhelming majority of deaths come not from losing fights, but from fighting a battle that never needed to happen.
Break those three into drillable actions and your improvement will far outpace pure aim practice. The criteria for each individual system are covered in the building, combat, and resources guides on the Chinese section.
