Overwatch 2 Guide#

Overwatch 2 is a free-to-play team shooter developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. It launched simultaneously on PC and consoles worldwide on October 4, 2022, and has been free-to-play from day one. The core of the game is 5v5 team play: two squads fight over map objectives while players pick heroes from the roster and win through ability usage and team coordination.

Three Things to Know Before You Play#

  1. A phone number is mandatory. Every player must attach a working phone number to their Battle.net account and pass SMS Protect before they can play. It is part of Blizzard’s Defense Matrix anti-harassment system, and prepaid or VOIP numbers do not work.
  2. Veterans can merge accounts. With cross-progression live, players can merge several original Overwatch accounts into a single profile and keep the progress they earned before.
  3. It is free from day one. There was never a buy-to-play phase that later went free. Paid content is concentrated in the battle pass, cosmetics, and bundles that include the battle pass.

Launch Content Checklist#

At launch, the official content list included:

Content Description
Updated hero looks Every hero’s appearance was updated from the original game
Hero ability reworks Large-scale reworks of hero ability kits
5v5 multiplayer The standard team size for this game
6 new maps Including New Queen Street in Toronto (snow) and Midtown Manhattan
New mode: Push A symmetric map type where both teams fight for a robot at the map’s center and push it into enemy territory
New ping system For in-match communication
Reworked Competitive mode Redesigned relative to the original game
Over 40,000 new voice lines A massive expansion of hero voice work

New Heroes at Launch#

Hero Role What We Know
Sojourn Damage The series’ 34th hero, revealed ahead of Junker Queen; highly mobile, uses a railgun, and has cybernetic augmentation
Junker Queen Tank A launch hero, announced alongside the release date in June 2022
Kiriko Support The new support hero at launch, claimable by original Overwatch players through the Founder’s Pack

Hero Unlock Rules (Launch Policy)#

Player Situation How to Unlock
Everyone Logging in during Season 1 grants Junker Queen and Sojourn automatically
Players who bought the original Overwatch Kiriko via the Founder’s Pack; must log in and claim her before the end of Season 2
New players who never bought the original Roughly 100 matches to unlock most of the original roster

After the first two seasons, new heroes moved to a battle pass release cadence — covered in detail in this site’s battle pass guide.

Currency, Shop, and Battle Pass#

Item Rule
Currency Overwatch Coins
Exchange Rate 1 USD = 100 Overwatch Coins, purchasable without limit
Battle Pass Structure Each season has a free track and a paid premium track
Premium Pass Price 1,000 Overwatch Coins per season (about 10 USD)
Earning Currency for Free All players can earn Overwatch Coins for free through in-game seasonal challenges
Shop A brand-new item shop replaced the original Loot Box system at launch
Bundle The Watchpoint Pack costs 40 USD and includes a few skins, 2,000 Overwatch Coins, and the Season 1 premium battle pass

Season 1 was themed around cyberpunk, and its premium pass included the first Mythic skin — a customizable skin for Genji. Seasons rotate every nine weeks, each with its own theme and a fresh set of collectibles.

The Real State of PvE#

This is the most important correction in the entire guide. There is a great deal of outdated or flatly wrong information online about Overwatch 2’s PvE, and this site only publishes what can be verified:

Date Fact
May 2023 Game director Aaron Keller said the team could not deliver the originally planned PvE vision, dropping the replayable Hero Missions mode along with its talent trees and long-term hero progression
August 2023 Three co-op story missions shipped with the “Invasion” season: Resistance, Liberation, and Ironclad
As of July 31, 2026 Blizzard has not announced a release date for any new full PvE campaign, replayable Hero Missions, or talent tree system

The conclusion is straightforward: what was cut was the replayable-mission-plus-talent-tree framework; the three co-op story missions are content that actually shipped; and the claim that “PvE arrives in late 2026” has no official basis. The February 2026 Overwatch Spotlight announced a season structure overhaul, multiple new heroes, map updates, Competitive changes, and the “Reign of Talon” narrative line — it did not announce the return of the original PvE plan.

Official Direction for 2026#

Direction Content
Ongoing story The first continuous narrative in series history began in February 2026
New heroes Five new heroes in Season 1 of 2026
Heroes going free The roadmap includes free heroes and changes such as the Mythic shop, making cosmetic progression more flexible

Quick Start for New Players#

  1. Sort out your account first — attach a working phone number to your Battle.net account, and merge accounts if you are a returning player
  2. Claim your heroes in Season 1 — Junker Queen and Sojourn are granted on login, and original players should not miss the Founder’s Pack claim window
  3. Know where free ends — matches are free; spending sits in the battle pass and cosmetics
  4. Learn Push and Flashpoint — the two most important new modes relative to the original game
  5. Remember the seasonal cadence — seasons rotate every nine weeks, and passes and rewards follow the season

FAQ#

Is the game paid?#

No. Overwatch 2 has been free-to-play since its October 4, 2022 launch; paid content is the premium battle pass (1,000 Coins per season, about 10 USD) and shop cosmetics. Players who want everything at once can look at the 40 USD Watchpoint Pack.

Can I play without linking a phone number?#

No. SMS Protect is a hard requirement and part of the Defense Matrix anti-harassment system; prepaid and VOIP numbers are not accepted.

Is there PvE?#

There are three shipped co-op story missions (Resistance, Liberation, Ironclad), but the planned replayable Hero Missions and talent tree progression were abandoned in 2023, and as of the end of July 2026 there is still no official release date for any new PvE.

How many heroes are there now?#

35 at launch, including 3 new ones. Heroes added afterwards arrived in batches through the battle pass; the current full roster is whatever the game itself shows — this site does not guess at unverified hero totals.

Can I play with friends across platforms?#

Yes. Cross-play and cross-progression were supported at launch, a first for the series.

  • Apex Legends — a fast-paced hero shooter
  • Valorant — tactical competitive shooting
  • Fortnite — building and battle royale
  • Team Fortress 2 — classic team-based shooting
  • Marvel Rivals — a team-based hero shooter
