Bosses & Combat#

This page covers the two verified key fights of Ori and the Will of the Wisps: the battle with Kwolok and the final fight with Shriek. Scope first: beyond these two, the full boss list, each boss’s movesets, damage values and phase splits are not in public verified sources — this site keeps no list and invents no strategies; rely on the game itself.

The two verified key fights#

Fight Nature Outcome
Kwolok Story battle: corrupted by the Foul Presence, he attacks Ori Kwolok dies of his wounds
Shriek Final fight: steals Seir Ori defeats it, then merges with Seir

The Kwolok fight: a tragedy, not a victory#

The framing of this fight must come first: Kwolok is not a boss the player “defeats.”

  • Kwolok was corrupted by the Foul Presence while seeking the Luma Pools (Strength) wisp;
  • Corrupted, he attacked Ori;
  • The conflict ended with Kwolok mortally wounded;
  • Dying, he entrusted Ori with caring for the Moki and for Niwen.

In gameplay terms it is a story-driven battle; in narrative terms it is the heaviest tragedy of the game’s midsection. What the player “wins” here is a friend’s death. Understanding that is what gives weight to the dying wish — care for the Moki and for Niwen — in the story that follows.

The Shriek fight: the final battle#

Who the opponent is#

Shriek is an owl, born deformed and encased in calcified bone. Shunned and driven out by other adult owls as a chick, it twisted and was swallowed by darkness — and the first thing it saw on hatching was the fossilized skeleton of its parents. Baur tells Ori this backstory at Baur’s Reach; it is the entire emotional setup for the final fight.

Where the fight sits in the story#

With the five Wisps gathered, Ori returns Seir to the Spirit Tree; the tree, feeling itself too old to guard the light, passes the burden to Ori. Shriek then seizes Seir, and the final fight begins. When it ends, Seir merges with Ori and the game moves into its single ending — full details in Endings.

Preparation advice#

The following is based only on verified system mechanics, not on unverified boss numbers:

Item Advice Basis
Health reserve Equip Vitality (extra health cells 1/2/3) and Resilience (damage taken reduced 15/20/25/30%) Verified tiers via GameFAQs
Healing management Regenerate spends energy to heal at will; keep energy above the cost of one heal Verified mechanic
Offense-defense conversion Bash deflects projectiles — your pivot during bullet-hell phases Verified mechanic
Ranged damage Spirit Arc pairs with Splinter (splits into 3/4/5 arrows at 50% damage each) Verified mechanic
Ancestral Light Two trees, 50% total damage bonus — get both before the finale Verified via GameFAQs

A story node tied to the “Heart of Stone” achievement sits at the end of the Shriek fight. The full achievement framework is in Achievements.

The general hard-fight checklist#

The boss list is not covered, but “how to prepare for a hard fight” can be explained entirely with verified systems. Before any high-intensity fight, run this table:

Check Action
Health & energy cells Are Vitality / Energy shards equipped to top up the cells
Damage reduction Is Resilience in place — it outranks damage shards for hard fights
Active slots Melee, ranged and Bash all equipped
Energy reserve Energy topped up before entering the fight area
Ancestral Light Both 50%-bonus trees collected
Healing plan An escape route and a Regenerate timing already decided

Where the Shriek fight hooks into the flow#

Placed into the main-story flow, the final fight’s connections look like this:

Story node State
Five Wisps gathered (Memory / Eyes / Strength / Heart / the traveling Voice) Main collection complete
At the Spirit Tree’s heart Ori returns Seir; the tree passes on its burden
Shriek seizes Seir The final fight triggers
Shriek defeated Seir merges with Ori; single ending follows

Two practical corollaries: first, your world exploration should already be finished before the finale — your build and resources are in “final form,” with no pre-fight collecting to fall back on, so tidy up before the Spirit Tree’s heart; second, the post-fight achievement node (Heart of Stone) and the ending cutscene run continuously — do not skip cutscenes anywhere in the sequence.

Where the Kwolok fight hooks into the flow#

The Kwolok fight happens in the Luma Pools (Strength wisp) phase — not an opening skirmish but the mid-game’s story pivot. Its context:

  • Before: Kwolok and Ori built their relationship back in Kwolok’s Hollow;
  • The fight itself: the corrupted Kwolok attacks Ori;
  • After: Kwolok dies of his wounds, entrusting Ori with the Moki and Niwen.

Practical impact on planning: after the Luma Pools phase the story’s tone turns clearly darker and the earlier NPC relationship lines start to close — if you play for the story, stop skipping dialogue from here on.

The universal hard-fight loop: observe — convert — recover#

No per-boss data, yet hard fights still have a method. This three-step loop is built on verified mechanics and applies to any high-intensity fight:

Step Action Mechanic basis
Observe First few rounds, dodge only — learn the enemy’s attack patterns Enemy movesets are not covered; observation is the only reliable intel
Convert When projectiles appear, use Bash to turn defense into offense Bash deflects projectiles (verified)
Recover Open distance and heal with Regenerate Heal at any time (verified), but budget the energy

Paired with survival shards like Resilience and Vitality, this loop is the game’s “universal fallback.” It may not be the fastest, but it is the hardest to collapse.

The easiest way to ruin a metroidvania guide is the boss list: copy names, movesets and HP from other games and the structure looks complete while every line is false. This site’s handling: write only what is verified. The two fights above are verified; the rest wait for reliable public sources — never filled in from memory. For per-boss detail, rely on your own play and official material.

What is not covered#

The following are not in public verified sources; this site does not speculate — rely on the game: the full list of bosses and elite enemies, per-boss movesets and phase splits, damage and health values, frame data, or per-fight drops and rewards.

  • Combat — the weapon wheel, slots and shard pairing
  • Spirit Shards — tiered values for survival and damage shards
  • Endings — where the story goes after the Shriek fight
  • Story — the full Kwolok and Shriek storylines
