System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster Guide#
“The ecosystem of this ship is under my total control.” — SHODAN
About This Guide#
System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is a foundational work of the immersive sim genre — the 1999 original by Looking Glass Studios and Irrational Games was the first to fuse first-person shooting with RPG progression inside one system, and its environmental storytelling and player freedom have shaped the entire industry for more than two decades since. Nightdive Studios rebuilt the game on its in-house KEX Engine; the remaster launched on PC on June 26, 2025, covered every console platform on July 10, and supports cross-platform co-op for up to 4 players.
From October 1 to October 8, 2026, the Epic Games Store gave the game away for free, giving a large wave of players their first chance to walk the corridors of the Von Braun. What awaits them is a hardcore world of extremely scarce resources, enemies that strike without warning, and build paths that must be planned in advance — it does not hand you supplies at every corner the way modern shooters do, and it never puts a golden exclamation mark next to your objective. This guide organizes all of its content around a systems-deconstruction approach: it first takes apart the three progression axes of class, attributes and skills, and psionics, then advances through the ship deck by deck in order, and finally pulls the survival logic of the whole vessel together with an enemy bestiary and resource management principles.
Whether you are a new player who claimed the free copy and is meeting SHODAN for the first time, or a veteran who played the original more than twenty years ago and wants to see what the remaster changed, you can find the page you need in the navigation tables below.

Why It’s Worth Catching Up On in 2026#
When the original System Shock 2 shipped it swept more than a dozen awards and picked up multiple Game of the Year honors, and later review-round updates still rated it 9/10. Several of its core developers went on to help launch the BioShock project — BioShock is often called its spiritual successor. In other words, the “storytelling woven into environments” and “build your own playstyle” design you can feel in BioShock, Prey, and a great many metroidvania-style games today all trace back to the Von Braun.
The remaster did not rebuild levels or add story — the official line is a modernization that preserves the original’s core design: remastered cutscenes, refreshed character and weapon model textures, widescreen and high-frame-rate support, improved controller handling, and cross-platform multiplayer. The 1999 design skeleton is kept intact, which also means its difficulty curve and resource pressure remain authentically “old-school harsh.” This guide breaks that harshness down into executable planning: where to scrimp, where to spend, and which door to leave shut for now and return to later.

Fast Track for New Players#
If you only have ten minutes to do your homework, read in this order:
- Read the Beginner’s Guide and Getting Started to learn how the three UNN recruitment origins differ;
- Read Class Choice and the Three Origins and pick your route for the first playthrough — newcomers are advised to take the Navy origin, as the hacking-and-repair route offers the most margin for error;
- Burn one rule from Attributes, Skills, and the Upgrade Module System into memory: there are only 4 OS upgrades in the entire game. This is the easiest trap in the game to fall into;
- As you progress, read the page for each deck in order — every deck walkthrough lists the door codes, keys, and contraptions specific to that area.
Editor’s Analysis#
Lead writer Chasun’s take: every system in this game punishes “balanced builds.” Cyber Module income never catches up with demand, weapons degrade, ammo runs dry, and without Hacking the key replicators stay locked — so every page of this guide answers the same question: with limited resources, which investment pays back the most. The joy of an immersive sim lies in choosing your own solution, and the value of a guide lies in knowing every option exists before you choose. Good luck living through your first night aboard the Von Braun.
Series and Connections#
- The original System Shock 2 launched in 1999; its predecessor, the first System Shock, received a remake in 2023;
- This game’s immersive sim design directly shaped the BioShock series — a project later founded with involvement from core members of this game’s team;
- The remaster’s cross-platform co-op keeps the original’s rules: no difficulty options, with values close to Hard difficulty.
