Vampire Survivors Guide#

What the Game Is#

Vampire Survivors is an action roguelite / reverse bullet-hell shooter developed and published by poncle. Studio founder Luca Galante is a former web developer, and the studio is based in London. The game first launched as a free browser game on itch.io on 2021-03-31 (written in HTML5), entered Steam Early Access on 2021-12-17 at $2.99, reached its 1.0 release on 2022-10-20, and has since expanded to consoles, mobile, and VR.

The core experience boils down to one sentence: you only move, your weapons attack on their own. Enemies pour in from every direction; your job is to kite them into conga lines with your positioning, slip through gaps to grab experience gems, and grow a handful of weapons and passive items into a screen-clearing super-weapon combo. When the 30-minute timer runs out, the Reaper shows up — in normal mode this kills your character and ends the run.

Core Gameplay Loop#

Movement and Auto-Attacks#

You only steer the character with the d-pad or stick; weapons fire automatically at enemies in range, and there is no manual aiming or active ability button. All of the execution pressure sits on movement: drift toward the thinner side of the horde, avoid getting surrounded, and drag the pack along its edges.

Experience Gems and Level-Ups#

Defeated enemies drop experience gems, and collecting them levels you up. Each level-up offers several random choices (a new weapon, a new passive, or a level for something you already have), and you decide your build direction on the spot. You get 6 weapon slots and 6 passive slots, and slot planning is the core constraint of every build.

Weapon Evolution#

When a weapon reaches level 8 and you are holding its matching passive item, opening the corresponding chest grants its evolved form (a super weapon). Whip paired with Hollow Heart, for example, evolves into Bloody Tear. The full evolution pairing table lives in the weapon compendium and the item analysis sub-guides.

The Reaper at 30:00#

In normal mode the Reaper spawns at 30:00; almost no build can fight it head-on, and your character dies there, ending the run. Killing the Reaper is the unlock condition for the hidden character Mask of the Red Death — that character starts with Death Spiral, 255 HP, +100% move speed, and +20% Might. Once you unlock Endless mode, you can keep fighting past the 30-minute mark.

Stages and Progression#

Main stages unlock on character level, not on “surviving 30 minutes”:

Stage Unlock condition
Mad Forest Unlocked by default
Inlaid Library Reach level 20 in Mad Forest
Dairy Plant Reach level 40 in Inlaid Library
Gallo Tower Reach level 60 in Dairy Plant
Cappella Magna Reach level 80 in Gallo Tower

Beyond these five starting stages, the base game has roughly 20 more (including Green Acres, Il Molise, The Bone Zone, Moongolow, Holy Forbidden, Boss Rash, Bat Country, Astral Stair, Whiteout, Space 54, Laborratory, and Room 1665), plus 7 more stages from DLC — 80 official stages in total (per the Stages page on vampire.survivors.wiki). The full unlock chain, relic locations, and hidden stage events are covered in the stage walkthrough sub-guide.

Co-Op and Cross-Play#

  • 4-player local co-op was added in version 1.6 (2023-08-17).
  • Online Co-op launched properly in 1.14 (2025-10-28), with the public beta starting 2025-08-29.
  • Cross-platform saves arrived with “The Coop” update on 2025-04-10.
  • On 2026-08-07 the developer announced that Steam Workshop support is being worked on.
  • The game joined the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog on 2026-08-12.

Three Things to Actually Watch in a Run#

  1. Push two or three weapons to evolution instead of filling all six slots — evolving needs three things at once: weapon level 8, the matching passive, and a chest. The more you spread your slots, the harder that is to assemble.
  2. Save passive slots for the weapons you actually plan to evolve — one of the main jobs of passive items is acting as evolution components, so picking passives around your already-decided main weapons pays off most directly.
  3. 30:00 is not the only finish line — the Reaper spawns then in normal mode, and some Arcanas and hidden content specifically require “surviving 30 minutes” or “killing the Reaper.” See the Arcana system and secrets sub-guides for details.

FAQ#

Who is this game for?#

Players who like low friction and high replayability. A run lasts under 30 minutes, the only input is movement, and the build depth lives in weapon-and-passive combinations plus the long-term relic and Arcana unlocks. At $2.99 at launch and $4.99 now, the price is an extremely low barrier for the genre.

Should I play the base game first or buy the DLC up front?#

The base game is self-contained: the main stage chain, weapon evolution, relics, and the Arcana system are all in it. DLC expands on a complete core loop (new characters, weapons, and stages) without changing the fundamentals. Confirm the base game is your taste first, then pick DLC by theme.

Will my progress be lost?#

Cross-platform saves arrived with the “The Coop” update on 2025-04-10 and let you sync progress between platforms; achievements and trophies are tracked separately per platform system. For save compatibility details, defer to the official patch notes.

About This Guide#

This section was compiled from online verification done in 2026-10 and covers public information on the base game and all 8 DLCs. Dynamic figures such as Steam review counts are stamped with their collection date; anything that could not be verified is marked as not recorded rather than guessed at.

  • Hades — a roguelike where each run layers boons into an overpowered build
  • The Binding of Isaac — twin-stick roguelike bullet-hell with deep item synergies
  • Slay the Spire — deckbuilding roguelike built on the same “snowball a small combo” philosophy
  • Minecraft — open-ended sandbox survival with a comparable progression loop
