Pathogenic Guide#

“You are the pathogen.”

Pathogenic is a 2D roguelike twin-stick shooter with bullet-hell elements, developed by the two-person indie team Aberrant Labs and published by Slug Disco. You play a pathogen invading the microscopic world inside a human body, taking the host’s immune system head-on: hunt immune cells, plunder their organelles and graft them onto your own body, build your form out of adjacency-triggered chain effects, and push step by step toward the depths of the organs.

The game launched on Steam in full on July 16, 2026, after a demo went up on October 31, 2025. Since launch it has held an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam: as of the October 6, 2026 data snapshot, 96% of 544 reviews are positive. PC Gamer called it “possibly the best realization of the lost potential of Spore’s cell stage.”

Every page in this hub is built on public sources verified as of October 6, 2026 (the Steam store page, Steam community reviews, indiegame.com, GameLook coverage, and SteamDB). Anything official and verifiable sources have not published is explicitly marked as “not covered” here, with no guesswork.

The Core Gameplay Loop#

Pathogenic is built around “fight — plunder — evolve,” a loop that runs both inside a single run and across the meta layer:

  1. Explore: levels are procedurally generated, and you move through one microscopic landscape after another. The game has 6 procedural stages, with bosses lurking deep in the organs.
  2. Fight: classic twin-stick controls — one side moves, the other aims and fires — while you deal with bullet patterns and encircling immune cells.
  3. Plunder and graft: after defeating an enemy cell, you can loot its organelles and graft them onto your own body — the game’s most distinctive growth system. The enemy’s equipment is your loot.
  4. Adjacency triggers: organelles interact based on adjacent placement, and neighboring organelles trigger chain effects. Where you place things is itself part of the build — the mechanic Adventure Gamers’ hands-on coverage highlighted.
  5. Permanent growth: every run collects plasmid shards, which feed a plasmid upgrade tree for permanent boosts. The 7 pathogens each have their own tree, and death does not wipe this progress.

Key Features#

Feature How it works
You play the pathogen You are not a hero fighting disease — you are the disease itself; the perspective is the core of the game, not a gimmick
Twin-stick shooting plus bullet hell One hand moves, one hand fires; enemy fire comes in sheets, so positioning matters as much as build-crafting
Organelle plunder Loot organelles from defeated cells and graft them onto yourself; enemy composition is your progression resource
Adjacent chain building Adjacent organelles trigger chain effects; slot layout directly shapes combat strength
Roguelike loop Runs reset, the meta grows through the plasmid tree, and each of the 7 pathogens has its own upgrade tree
Procedurally generated levels Lung airways, heart chambers, the brain’s neural network — organ scenes reshuffle run by run
15 challenge modes Built-in challenge play in the full release, for after you clear the game
Steam Deck optimized Official SteamOS + Linux support with dedicated handheld optimization

What the Sub-Guides Cover#

The Chinese hub runs 19 sub-guides: getting started (game goals, the core loop, and your first run), controls and interface for keyboard-mouse and gamepad, the pathogen system (the 7 pathogens and their plasmid trees), the organelle system (officially confirmed examples plus plunder-grafting and adjacency triggers), combat mechanics and survival technique, an enemy catalog of immune cells and hostile organisms, boss coverage for the opponents waiting in the organs, organ biomes and their procedural generation, meta-progression and the plasmid tree, build recommendations, co-op notes, achievements, Steam Workshop use, advanced play, beginner tips, purchase and setup FAQ, the verified update timeline, challenge modes, and a review page with purchase advice based on verifiable data.

Some sub-pages are still being re-verified and rewritten batch by batch. Anything NTGame has not yet verified is marked “not covered” on the page rather than filled in with invented data.

Minimum System Requirements#

The following are the minimum requirements published on the Steam store page:

Item Requirement
Graphics GeForce GTX 1050 / Radeon RX 560
Memory 8 GB RAM
OS 64-bit required (Windows / macOS / SteamOS + Linux versions all available)
Storage 2 GB available space

Recommended specs and detailed per-platform OS version requirements follow the live “System Requirements” section of the Steam store page; this hub does not maintain its own table for them.

Reception and Sales#

Metric Data (snapshot October 6, 2026)
Steam overall rating 96% positive across 544 reviews, “Overwhelmingly Positive” since launch
Steam recent-30-day rating 92% positive across 564 reviews
Steam English-language rating 95% positive across 2,934 reviews
Sales Third-party estimates (VGI data, cited by GameLook): roughly 25,000 copies in the first 24 hours, 100,000 in the first week, and an estimated 160,000 total — all third-party estimates, not official figures

To be clear about sourcing: the sales numbers come from the third-party estimator VGI, relayed by GameLook, and this hub does not treat them as official. Steam’s review ratios also roll with time — the numbers above are a snapshot from around October 6, 2026, and live figures may have moved by the time you read this.

Media Response#

Source Verdict
PC Gamer “Possibly the best realization of the lost potential of Spore’s cell stage”

PC Gamer invokes the famous cell stage of Spore — the microscopic-world prototype many players remember fondly and nobody ever fully delivered on. That is not a casual gameplay comparison; it credits the game for taking “being a pathogen inside a human body” seriously as the core of an action game.

A Note from the Editorial Desk#

This hub was organized and written by NTGame’s editorial team. An earlier version carried unverified game details; it has since been rewritten in full against verified sources, and every entry marked “not covered” will be filled in once the data can be checked. The developer, Aberrant Labs, is a two-person indie team; the rest of the team’s background has not been verified, so we do not elaborate on it.

Data verified through October 6, 2026.

  • Hades II — a roguelike where run-based combat feeds a permanent upgrade structure, like the plasmid tree here
  • Dead Cells — a fast roguelike action loop where each death funds lasting meta progression
  • Balatro — a roguelike about stacking interacting pieces, the way adjacent organelles chain effects
  • The Binding of Isaac — the item-synergy roguelike famous for builds made of looted parts
  • Slay the Spire 2 — a deck-building roguelike about assembling chains of effects that trigger one another
