Path of Exile 2 Builds#
There are no “class-exclusive skills” in this game, so a build isn’t chosen — it’s assembled. An endgame-viable build usually has five parts: the main skill, supports, passives, gear and Ascendancy. Missing any one, and the whole noticeably weakens.
The five components of a build#
| Component | Role | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Main skill | Carries your primary damage | Leveling two main skills at once, neither strong enough |
| Support gems | Reshape the main skill’s mechanics | Chasing numbers instead of mechanics |
| Passive tree | Supplies base attributes and key notables | Spreading too wide, finishing no path |
| Gear | Covers resistances, life and damage affixes | All damage, no resistances |
| Ascendancy | Supplies the class-exclusive mechanic | Picking a branch that doesn’t match the main skill |
Choose the main skill first#
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Single-target or area? | Decides whether it can carry boss fights alone |
| Does it scale with weapon damage? | Attacks use the weapon’s values; spells don’t |
| Is the cost sustainable? | High-cost skills need mana regen or cost reduction paired |
| Does it depend on an ailment? | Skills leaning on ignite or poison need support gems to set up |
Once the main skill is fixed, the passives, gear and Ascendancy all have a direction.
The logic for choosing supports#
| Your problem | The support to look for |
|---|---|
| Clearing too slow | More area or more projectiles |
| Single-target too slow | More crit or added elemental damage |
| Cost too high | Reduced cost or better recovery |
| Missing too much | More accuracy or bigger hit areas |
A common mistake is treating supports as “stat stacking.” The supports that actually work are the ones that change how the skill operates.
How to spend passive points#
| Stage | Approach |
|---|---|
| Early | Life, resistances and movement speed first |
| Mid | Damage nodes related to the main skill |
| Late | Key mechanic notables; leftover points into attributes |
The universal rule: one main path to the key notable beats five half-finished paths. The small scattered damage nodes look tempting, but splitting the investment makes every line pay out less.
Gear priorities#
| Priority | Affixes |
|---|---|
| Highest | Elemental resistances and life |
| High | Main-skill damage or skill levels |
| Mid | Movement speed and attack or cast speed |
| Low | Overflow stats of every kind |
Don’t chase “perfect affixes” while leveling — wearable, survivable, functional is qualified gear.
Leveling builds versus finished builds#
| Dimension | Leveling build | Finished build |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Near zero; often runs on drops | Needs key uniques |
| Power | Enough to clear the story; maybe not pinnacle | High ceiling |
| Forgiveness | High; low execution demands | Depends on mastery |
| Advice | Ride a leveling build to the endgame | Switch after resources accumulate |
Don’t copy an endgame build from day one. Many finished builds barely function without their core uniques — forcing one stalls you halfway.
When to switch builds#
| Signal | Response |
|---|---|
| Your main skill nerfed repeatedly | Consider a new main skill; passives may not need major changes |
| Core gear far above budget | Move to an alternative that doesn’t need that item |
| Can’t clear a full tier of maps | Fix defenses first, then consider switching |
| You simply hate the playstyle | Switch early — the conversion cost is lowest early in a league |
Common questions#
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What to check before copying a build | Whether you can actually obtain the core gear |
| Can one build do all content? | Usually not — map clearing and bosses want different things |
| Does switching mean releveling? | No — passives can be respec’d and skills swapped |
| How many gear sets do I need? | One is enough early; two by scenario later |
| How much of one attribute? | After meeting gear requirements, serve the main skill |
Judging whether a build is ready#
| Check | Passing line |
|---|---|
| Resistances | Near the panel cap, and still passing after the per-act penalty |
| Life or ES | Survives one big hit |
| Single-target | Finishes the boss’s damage-check phase in a reasonable window |
| Clear speed | No full map times out on clearing |
| Movement skill | At least one, on a comfortable key |
Any one of the five failing — fix it before adding damage. Low damage is “slow”; low survival is “dead.”
