Ranked Tiers and the RP System#
Ranked is the most distinctive system in Apex Legends: an entry cost is deducted before every match begins, and your score only rises if you perform better than that cost. Understanding this mechanic matters far more than memorizing tier names.
The Eight Tiers#
| Tier | Subdivisions | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rookie | Four divisions | No entry cost, pure accumulation |
| Bronze | Four divisions | The entry tier |
| Silver | Four divisions | Where most players sit |
| Gold | Four divisions | The median tier and the one with the largest share of players |
| Platinum | Four divisions | Where the ladder visibly starts to stretch out |
| Diamond | Four divisions | The high-tier threshold, often sharing lobbies with stronger squads |
| Master | No divisions | Advances purely on accumulated RP |
| Apex Predator | No divisions | Top 750 players per platform; a rolling leaderboard rather than a fixed tier |
Every division inside a tier (IV, III, II, I) requires accumulating a set amount of RP to promote, and only Master and Apex Predator have no divisions.
Where RP Comes From#
| Source | Notes |
|---|---|
| Placement | The higher the placement, the higher the base points; past tenth place it is near zero |
| Kills and assists | Tied to squad placement; the higher the placement, the greater the return |
| Streak bonus | Reaching the top five in consecutive matches grants extra rewards, with a cap |
| Challenger bonus | Eliminating opponents ranked above you grants extra points |
Season 30 still keeps two limits: once kills and assists in a single match pass eight, every further one pays half value. In other words, farming kills at the start of a match is hard to sustain as a source of profit in high tiers.
Entry Costs#
At the start of each match, an RP fee is deducted based on your current tier. The higher the tier, the more expensive the entry — which is why high tiers shed points so quickly.
| Tier | Entry cost (RP) |
|---|---|
| Rookie | 0 |
| Bronze | About 10 |
| Silver | About 20 |
| Gold | About 38 |
| Platinum | About 48 |
| Diamond | About 65 |
| Master | About 90 |
| Apex Predator | About 90 |
The numbers shift with each version, but the underlying rule does not: your score has to outrun the entry cost. High tiers therefore cannot be accumulated by playing more matches, only by dying less and reaching the top five more often.
Two Splits and Resets#
Each season is divided into two splits of roughly a month and a half each. When a split changes, a soft reset nudges tiers slightly down and stretches the ladder out again.
| Moment | What happens |
|---|---|
| Season start | Re-placement based on the previous season and hidden MMR; placement matches are required |
| End of split one | Soft reset; Platinum and below keep most of their RP, Master and above drop further |
| End of split two | Season settles and rewards are issued on the highest tier reached across the two splits |
Rewards depend on the highest tier reached in each of the two splits, so hitting your target tier in just one split earns you the corresponding reward.
Ranked Ladder Events#
Season 30 extends the Ranked ladder event window to five days. It is a limited-time, intensive climbing event that ranks players by their best results across a set number of matches and divides them into brackets. Its purpose is to give players who don’t want to grind the whole season a short sprint window.
Squad Restrictions#
| Rule | Notes |
|---|---|
| Tier gap limit | Squad members’ tiers must sit in a similar range, to stop high tiers carrying low tiers upward |
| Matchmaking basis | Based on the highest-tier member of the squad |
| Queuing with strangers | Allowed, but communication costs are high and win rates are usually below a premade squad |
Principles for Climbing#
| Principle | Reason |
|---|---|
| Top five over kills | Placement points are the base; kill points are only a bonus |
| Don’t fight on drop | A fight with zero gear has negative expected value |
| Give up lost matches | When the squad is down and the ring is against you, holding top five beats forcing a fight |
| Log your deaths | Losing streaks usually come from the same class of mistake, not from luck |
| Stop before a split change | When a reset is close, the risk of pushing outweighs the reward |
What Loses Points Fastest#
| Behavior | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Dropping hot every match | Every match becomes a gamble with very low expected value |
| Pushing alone | The squad fights one short and teamfight win rate falls off a cliff |
| Looting in place after a fight | The classic script for being cleaned up by a third party |
| Avoiding every fight | With no kill points, placement alone rarely covers the entry cost |
| Queuing on while tilted | Degraded mechanics amplify losses match after match |
About Hidden MMR#
Ranked matchmaking references both RP and a hidden skill rating. This explains two frequently complained-about phenomena: opponents in the same tier vary widely in skill, and coming back after a long break makes matches feel noticeably harder. For steady climbing, the most controllable factor is still a premade squad with a fixed playstyle.
