Enemy Compendium#

The enemy ecosystem of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is made up of faction soldiers, wild animals, Cultists, mercenaries, Isu constructs, and mythical bosses. This page covers how to identify each enemy type, how to counter them, and the recommended levels and combat mechanics of the five mythical bosses.

A note on numbers Every enemy in this game (mythical bosses included) has health and damage that shift dynamically with level, difficulty, and the enemy scaling setting — there is no single fixed health value. This page therefore lists no fixed health or XP figures; wherever numbers come up, in-game values are the final word.

Enemy Levels and Scaling#

Every enemy’s health, damage, and resilience are level-driven: the higher the level, the thicker the health and the harder the hits. Mythical bosses have fixed recommended levels and fixed mechanics, but their health still varies with difficulty and scaling settings. So the reference frame for judging any enemy is always “your level, gear, and engravings” — never a fixed number, which is why this page has no fixed health table.

Level Gap Penalties#

When enemies outlevel you, combat carries explicit mechanical penalties — the classic case is control abilities failing:

  • When an enemy is 2 or more levels above you, the Spartan Kick can no longer knock them down or launch them — the damage still lands, but no knockdown triggers, so terrain kills like “kicking them off a cliff” or “into a campfire” stop working.
  • The bigger the level gap, the less stagger and imbalance your attacks cause, and assassination abilities often fail to one-shot, sharply cutting their value.
  • Conversely, when you’re 2 or more levels above the enemy, most regular enemies can simply be rolled over.

Difficulty and Enemy Scaling Options#

The game splits “difficulty” and “enemy scaling” into two independent settings: the former adjusts overall enemy damage and health, the latter decides how closely enemy levels track yours.

Setting Description
Difficulty Four tiers — Easy, Normal, Hard, Nightmare — raising overall enemy damage and health; exact multipliers per the in-game values
Enemy scaling: Default The official default scaling amount; enemy levels partially track yours
Enemy scaling: Heavy The largest scaling; enemy levels hug yours, keeping pressure constant while exploring
Enemy scaling: Medium Scales less than “Heavy” and more than “Light”
Enemy scaling: Light The least scaling; enemies stay near their region’s original level distribution, making overlevel steamrolling easiest

Tip If same-level enemies seem unusually hard, check whether enemy scaling is set to “Heavy”; switch it to “Light” to get the overlevel fun back. Mythical bosses are affected by both settings too — adjust before the fight according to your gear.

Mythical Boss Overview#

The five mythical bosses are this game’s most iconic challenges: fixed recommended levels, fixed mechanics, with health varying by difficulty and scaling. Four of them guard the Atlantis artifacts; the Hydra is the final target of the Cult’s “Gods of the Aegean Sea” branch.

Name Recommended Level Combat Mechanics Reward
Cyclops Level 35 A duel inside a cave on Kephallonia; the club sweeps and ground slams have huge reach — keep lateral movement and find damage windows One of the Atlantis artifacts
Sphinx Level 34 A riddle fight: answer three riddles correctly and press the matching stone symbols to claim the artifact without a fight; a wrong answer fails on the spot — manual-save before the challenge One of the Atlantis artifacts
Minotaur Level 40 An arena duel deep in the Messara labyrinth; its charge and grabs hurt enormously — use the arena pillars to block the charge path One of the Atlantis artifacts
Medusa Level 46 Her petrifying gaze must be dodged behind pillar cover; petrified, you’ll eat a lethal combo. She also summons controlled enemies — cover positioning is the key to survival One of the Atlantis artifacts
Hydra Level 47 A naval fight: sink her flagship and escorts first, then board for a deck duel — watch for wide sweeps and combos in the tight space Cult clue and branch-completion reward

Tip Collecting all four Atlantis artifacts is the prerequisite for opening the gate to Atlantis. Recommended levels are the community’s rule of thumb; real pressure still varies with your gear, engravings, and scaling settings — close the level and gear gap before fighting if you’re underleveled.

Special Enemy Types#

Cultist Guards#

Type Level Range Weapon Special Ability
Cultist warrior 10-30 Various Moderate combat power
Cultist assassin 15-35 Daggers Stealth attacks, high burst

2 Healers Restore other enemies’ health
3 Commanders Buff other enemies

Group Fight Techniques#

Technique Description
Split the battlefield Break enemies into small groups and defeat them one by one
Take the high ground Occupy elevated spots to strike first
Environmental play Lure enemies toward cliffs and oil jars
Elemental attacks Use fire or poison mist on groups
Dodge first When surrounded, dodging outranks attacking

Handling Level Gaps#

Level Gap Strategy
You’re 2+ levels above Roll over them easily
You’re at the same level Standard combat strategy
Enemy is 1-2 levels above Takes skill and good gear
Enemy is 3+ levels above Level up and gear up before returning

Elite Enemy Drops#

Drop quality grows with enemy level and rarity; the table groups drops by enemy type:

Enemy Type Main Drops Notes
Regular soldiers Drachmae, some materials and gear Drop volume grows with enemy level
Elite soldiers More drachmae and higher-quality gear Looting bodies and camp chests pays better
Cultists Cult clues Used to track other members on the Cult list
Mercenaries Drachmae and gear Defeating them advances your mercenary tier
Mythical bosses Atlantis artifacts and quest-completion rewards The four artifacts open the gate to Atlantis

Enemy Weakness Summary#

Enemy Type Biggest Weakness Recommended Attack
Shield soldiers Back attacks, heavy guard-breaking hits Flank or break the guard
Archers Getting close, assassination Close in and kill fast
Heavy soldiers Dodge counters, elemental attacks Dodge + sustained elemental damage
Cavalry Killing the horse, ranged shots Shoot the mount with arrows
Cyclopes Fire, ranged attacks Arrows + fire
Isu guards Isu spear Attack with the Isu spear

Enemy Respawn Mechanics#

Respawn rules vary by camp and region; intervals follow in-game behavior:

Mechanic Description
Camps and outposts Regular guards reappear over time or after fast travel
Fort garrisons Same as camps; elites and commanders respawn slower
Elites and mythical bosses Do not respawn routinely after defeat; related quest progress persists
Wild animals Regenerate with region exploration; encounter them again after fast travel

Enemy Weakness Chart#

Enemy Fire Poison Assassination Arrows Melee
Regular infantry ★★★ ★★★ ★★★★★ ★★★ ★★★★
Shield soldiers ★★ ★★★ ★★★★ ★★ ★★ (frontal)
Archers ★★★★ ★★★ ★★★★★ ★★★ ★★★★★
Heavy soldiers ★★★ ★★★★ ★★★ ★★ ★★★
Cavalry ★★ ★★ ★★★★ ★★★★★ ★★★
Cyclopes ★★★★★ ★★★ ★★★★ ★★★★ ★★★
Isu guards ★★ ★★ ★★ ★★ ★★★★ (Isu spear)

Tip Against high-level enemies, assassination is the most effective strategy. Even when an assassination can’t one-shot, it removes a large chunk of health — then switch to Warrior gear to finish the job.

Once more, the house rule: enemy health, damage, and XP rewards all shift in real time with level, difficulty, and scaling settings. Every strength judgment on this page is mechanics-based rather than number-based, and in-game values are always the final word.
