007 First Light resource system

Resource System#

007 First Light makes “resources” the skeleton of its gameplay. Instead of using ammo counts to create tension, it uses two charge lines plus one scarce ability to force you to think, before every single action, whether “this one is worth it”. This page breaks the system down completely.

1. The Three “Resource” Lines#

Resource Nature Replenished By Used For
Electronic charge Gadget energy Batteries, car batteries, power sockets Electrical gadgets: the Q Watch, the Laser Strap, the Impact Camera
Chemical charge Gadget energy Cleaning supplies, hand sanitizer, lab equipment Chemical gadgets: the Dart Phone, smoke grenades, flash grenades
Instinct Character ability Recovers slowly Luring enemies, bluffing, precision aiming in combat

The first two determine “how much gadget work you can do”, and the third determines “how many tactical moves you can make”. None of the three is plentiful.

2. Electronic Charge#

Item Detail
Common sources Batteries, car batteries, wall power sockets
Powers Q Watch (hacking, lockpicking, jamming), Laser Strap (cutting, blinding, disarming), Impact Camera (knockback, armor breaking)
High-drain scenarios Chained lockpicking, cutting through several vents in a row, or forcing through grouped enemies

Tip: electrical gadgets are mostly “tools” — spending them on doors, locks, and structures is usually better value than spending them in combat.

3. Chemical Charge#

Item Detail
Common sources Cleaning supplies, hand sanitizer, lab equipment
Powers Dart Phone (pulling targets away), smoke grenades (escapes), flash grenades (traps), Missile Pen (explosions)
High-drain scenarios Back-to-back smoke escapes or chained distractions

Tip: smoke grenades and the Dart Phone are cheap to use — they are the workhorses for “frequent use”. The Missile Pen is powerful but precious; save it for armor and grouped targets.

4. Instinct: The Scarcest Piece#

Instinct is the game’s most distinctive resource — it cannot be replenished by picking things up, and it recovers slowly.

Use Effect When to Use
Lure Pull an enemy to a spot of your choosing When a guard is blocking the only way through
Bluff Talk your way out when confronted The last resort to avoid violence during social stealth
Focus Slow motion in combat for precise shots The few critical shots in a firefight

Principle: Instinct is a resource for “changing the situation”, not for “routine operations”. Spend it where it saves you the most trouble — pulling a whole squad away is worth more than steadying one shot in a chaotic brawl.

5. How Difficulty Affects Resources#

Difficulty Resource Situation
Novice Gadgets have almost no cooldown and can be chained; minimal resource pressure
Intended Cooldowns apply; you scavenge your own supplies; a normal economy
Purist Higher consumption, scarcer resources; one wrong spend can leave you cornered

So on higher difficulties, the value of “using one gadget less” is often equal to one extra margin for error.

6. Resource Management Strategy#

  1. Scout before you commit: the Q-Scope costs nothing — use it to decide “what this level actually requires”;
  2. Match the loadout to the objective: a stealth run doesn’t need the Missile Pen, and an aggressive run doesn’t need a full lockpacking kit;
  3. Top up as you pass: refill at every supply point you see — don’t wait until you run dry;
  4. Keep one card in hand: always hold one smoke or flash grenade as your exit;
  5. Separate the uses: electronic charge goes to doors and structures, chemical charge goes to escapes and distractions.

7. The Four Most Common Kinds of Waste#

Waste Consequence
Using explosives on ordinary guards The most expensive resource spent on the cheapest target
Chaining smoke grenades without repositioning Chemical charge gone, and you’re still standing in place
Treating Instinct as routine Nothing left for the moment that matters
Entering a big level without supplies No cards left to play in the climax

8. Resources and Your Playstyle#

Put simply, this game’s resource system rewards planning, not reaction. The earlier you decide “what I will use and what I will save on this level”, the less you need to improvise at the critical moment. That is exactly the “agent rhythm” the game wants players to feel.

9. Budgeting Within a Single Level#

Splitting a level into three phases makes resource budgeting much easier:

Phase Resource Strategy
Opening (scouting) Use only the Q-Scope — it consumes no charge; settle routes and targets first
Middle (execution) Use tools to pick locks, pull targets away, and pickpocket; spend electronic and chemical charge in small amounts as needed
Closing (wrap-up) Keep at least one smoke/flash for the exit; explosives are reserved for hard targets

10. Resources and Loadouts#

How fast your resources drain depends on what you carry:

Loadout Style Main Resource Drawn Advice
Ghost stealth (Dart Phone + smoke grenade + Laser Strap) Chemical + electronic Low chemical drain; suited to long stealth sessions
Balanced agent Mostly electronic Watch the electronic cost of doors and locks
Aggressive (Missile Pen + Impact Camera + flash grenade) Chemical + electronic Heavy drain; make sure to refill midway

11. FAQ#

Question Answer
Can Instinct be replenished by picking things up? No. It recovers over time — it is a matter of “uses”, not “quantity”
Do resources carry between levels? They reset per level and checkpoint; re-stock when entering a new level
Does difficulty affect resources? Yes. Higher difficulty means scarcer resources and higher consumption
Will I get stuck without enough gadgets? Rarely. Almost every level has multiple solutions, and a missing tool can usually be routed around
