Spy Gadgets#
Q Branch gadgets are what set 007 First Light apart from an ordinary stealth game. Most of them are not infinite-use; they run on two charge resources. Meanwhile, gadget slots are limited, and you must return to the Q Lab to equip them manually before setting out. Understanding these two rules matters more than memorizing every gadget’s name.
1. Loadout Rules#
| Rule | Notes |
|---|---|
| Two permanent gadgets | From Chapter 2, “New Home”, the Q-Lens and Q-Watch are permanently equipped — they cannot be removed and take no free slot |
| Free slots | Other gadgets occupy limited slots; a third slot opens up later |
| Manual loadout required | After acquiring a new gadget, you must actively equip it at the Q Lab and configure the watch modules, or you may arrive on mission “as if you brought nothing” |
2. The Two Charge Resources#
| Resource | Refilled From | Powers |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic charge | Batteries, car batteries, power outlets | Electric gadgets such as the Q-Watch hacking, Laser Strap, and Shockwave Camera |
| Chemical charge | Cleaning supplies, hand sanitizer, lab equipment | Chemical gadgets such as the Dart Phone, Smoke Pod, and Flash Mine |
3. Full Gadget Table#
| Gadget | Function | Resource | Roughly Acquired |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q-Lens | Sees through walls to tag enemies, interactables, items, and clues | None | Chapter 2, “New Home” |
| Q-Watch | Hacking, disabling cameras and electronic locks, creating environmental distractions; can perform laser cutting | Electronic | Chapter 2, “New Home” |
| Dart Phone | Fires a toxin dart that makes the target feel ill and leave their post, creating windows for pickpocketing and takedowns | Chemical | After Chapter 2 (after “A Matter of Trust”) |
| Smoke Pod | Deploys a smoke screen to break line of sight and cover a retreat | Chemical | Chapter 3 |
| Shockwave Camera | Releases a shockwave to knock back enemies, shatter armor and fragile structures | Electronic | Chapter 3 |
| Laser Strap | Cuts padlocks and vents; blinds and disarms enemies | Electronic | Around the start of the Mauritania arc |
| Flash Mine | A sticky blinding trap that triggers when an enemy comes near | Chemical | Around the start of the Mauritania arc |
| Missile Pen | Fires a small explosive warhead; high power against armor and enemy groups | Chemical | Chapter 7, “Fall of a Knight” |
Note: different guides state slightly different “acquisition timings” for individual gadgets (due to differing cuts of chapter prologues/epilogues and mission segments); the table above gives the ranges where they agree.
4. Gadget-by-Gadget Essentials#
Q-Lens#
The most durable tool in the game. A scan sees through walls, outlines enemies, and marks pick-up items and clues; scanning once at the door of every new room is recommended. It consumes no resources at all — the most cost-effective reconnaissance tool there is.
Q-Watch#
Your hacking interface. It can disable cameras and electronic locks, trigger environmental distractions, and perform laser cutting after a hack (paired with the Laser Strap). Remember to go back to the Q Lab and configure the modules before use, or you will be missing functions on site.
Dart Phone#
The stealth player’s favorite. The toxin dart it fires makes the target suddenly feel unwell and leave their post for the restroom — creating both a passage window and openings for pickpocketing and takedowns. It kills no one, making it the cleanest mid-range option on a “non-lethal” route.
Smoke Pod#
Not a lethal tool but an exit button. The moment stealth breaks, dropping one smoke screen lets you vanish again and disengage. Low cost, frequently usable — the key to “preserving the stealth rhythm”.
Shockwave Camera#
Releases a shockwave that pushes enemies back and shatters armor, and can also knock down fragile door panels. When surrounded or facing a crowd, it buys you the time to reposition.
Laser Strap#
A “lockpick trio” in one: cuts padlocks, opens vents, and severs railings. Against enemies it can blind and disarm, forcibly creating one close-quarters opening in a firefight. It is the easiest gadget to forget — and many collectibles sit behind doors only it can open.
Flash Mine#
A sticky blinding trap. Place one in a corridor or doorway and it triggers as enemies pass. Its trigger radius is bigger than it looks, so leave margin when placing it, or you may unintentionally spook a target you meant to leave undisturbed.
Missile Pen#
The most combat-oriented of the lot. The small explosive warhead it fires can wipe out enemy groups and armored units directly, and firing it does not blow your cover the way a regular gun does. Ammunition is limited — save it for the toughest targets.
5. Recommended Loadouts#
| Style | Gadget Combo | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Ghost stealth | Dart Phone + Smoke Pod + Laser Strap | Going entirely undetected |
| Balanced agent | Q-Watch + Laser Strap + Dart Phone | A mix of unlocking, distraction, and takedowns |
| Loud assault | Missile Pen + Shockwave Camera + Flash Mine | Already in a firefight and needing to clear fast |
6. The Three Easiest Mistakes#
- Forgetting to equip: acquiring a new gadget does not mean carrying it; always confirm at the Q Lab before setting out;
- Wasting charge: electronic and chemical resources are limited; burning all your tools at level start leaves you with no cards to play where it counts;
- Treating the Q-Lens as decoration: it is the free and strongest reconnaissance tool; not scanning a room surrenders half your information advantage.
7. Pre-Mission Loadout Checklist#
Before every mission, run through this in order:
- Return to the Q Lab and open the equipment bench;
- Confirm the Q-Lens / Q-Watch are in place (permanent — no action needed);
- Set your free slots to “stealth”, “balanced”, or “assault” for the level’s objectives;
- If the level has collectibles behind padlocks or vents, bring the Laser Strap;
- Check that both the electronic and chemical charge meters are full;
- Go.
8. Gadgets, Challenges, and Achievements#
A number of challenges and achievements are bound to specific gadgets — disarming enemies with laser-type equipment, escaping a head-on confrontation with a tool, hacking a grenade before it detonates. Gadgets are not just tools for finishing the game; they are the keys to “knocking achievements down one by one”. If you are chasing full completion, when building a loadout, spare a thought for “does this level have a gadget-related challenge?” Conversely, coming back later via chapter select to mop them up works just as well.
